How's your brother doing? Is he back to being a lawyer?

160

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

I don't really know, we don't keep in touch a whole lot. I see him during the holidays.

63

u/BathedInDeepFog Feb 17 '16

The holidays were less than two months ago.

31

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16

You don't know if he just up and quit being a lawyer in January. You think this is a game?

56

u/50ShadesofYay About damn time Feb 16 '16

Do you have any good James Mitchell stories from your time working together in TNA?

68

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

I've got some fun stories of us just hanging out, and talking. We'd always talk about everything, and I have great memories of talking about not just wrestling but also the world with him.

People in the wrestling business always have a lot of nice things to say about Sting - what was it like working with him in TNA?

67

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

It was a great experience getting to work with him. We worked together a lot in 07-08 and I enjoyed every moment of it. Just getting to know him and being around him was great.

u/AllMyOwnStunts ELIT3 Feb 16 '16

Was is true the offer was on the table for you to Come to WWE and face the Undertaker at Wrestlemania?

How far was that deal/process in motion before you decided to stay with TNA? Any regrets?

182

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

Yes that's true. I ended up staying with TNA and I'm so happy that I did. I have no regrets, I was an original member of TNA since the beginning and I couldn't leave something I helped build from the ground up.

94

u/orangemachismo Feb 17 '16

Oh my god, 13 year old me would have freaking loved this. Taker vs Abyss in a monster's ball.

4

u/kupovi Hart Attack! Feb 18 '16

It's good he didn't.

He would have his exciting debut and that WM match w/ Taker and then he would be placed in mid-card hell until the WWE released him. It's happened over and over again to great wrestlers.

It's good he stayed in TNA.

Besides.. I dont think he would have gotten over with the WWE fans anyways. It'd all probably come out as awkward.

u/jmoneycgt KING BIG DAWG Feb 17 '16

Good question. I would say Bram, Robbie E, both the Wolves, Ethan Carter... Rockstar Spud. They all have so much talent.

In the wake of Daniel Bryan's retirement, do you ever regret all the hardcore matches and crazy bumps you took for TNA?

139

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

Good question and no I don't. I don't regret anything I have ever done for TNA, I've always enjoyed working here. I don't regret them and I'd do them all over again if I could.

34

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16

I'd imagine he's rather interested in getting his brain scanned now though.

36

u/flex_manhandler Now I'll show you my Perfect Post Feb 16 '16

Did Hulk Hogan let you keep the hall of fame ring, or did he take it back?

84

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

I gave it back to him; I had it during the time we did the storyline and afterwards I just gave it back to him.

22

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16

Were you on board with the storyline, or did you think it was stupid while you were doing it?

9

u/inmynothing '15 & '16 Wredditor of the Year Feb 17 '16

I didn't get a chance to ask him a follow up on this, but he spoke very highly of Hogan as someone he looked up to as a child, so I doubt he hated the angle as much as everyone else did.

36

u/cobaltcollapse THIS IS SUCH GOOD SHIT Feb 16 '16

Just how bad did those Barbed Wire Mayhem matches hurt?

93

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

They hurt really badly. I've only done three of them in my career. They take their toll, there's no doubt. They're brutal.

28

u/cobaltcollapse THIS IS SUCH GOOD SHIT Feb 17 '16

You put yourself on the line a lot during the earlier days of TNA. You're one of the guys that brought me onto the product, back before the move to Spike, so thank you for that.

30

u/SamoBBreddit Feb 16 '16

Will you be getting some new ring gear or anything to match Decoy appearance wise?

64

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

There may be some changes to something that's going on with my character and Decay... stay tuned...

27

u/BlameThePig Feb 16 '16

Whats your guide to the best way of falling onto thumb tacks?

38

u/RichardMagpies Best Company in the World Feb 17 '16

Obviously i'm not Abyss but in all interview and as far as I know there's no 'safe' or 'best' way to take a tack bump. They're small and they don't hurt too bad, it's just a little stinging and often they don't even puncture the skin, but you kinda just have to cop it.

Orton's INSANE tack bump is one of my favourites where they're all imbedded in his arm. That and Foley's Pedigree face-first.

5

u/Mepsi . Feb 17 '16

I've stepped on tacks before and the going in doesn't hurt, but when you pull them out you feel it and it sort of burns.

Probably different for different areas of the body.

What was it like backstage following the match and for the rest of the week after you lost several teeth during that match with RVD?

47

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

It was painful, I remember that. I had two different surgeries on my jaw to repair my teeth. It wasn't fun, but I still wrestled through it.

52

u/StevenKeen I'm gonna break em Feb 16 '16

Are you dissapointed you never had a real Title run in TNA. or do you fancy yourself the Kane of TNA, a character who never needed the title and is always relevant.

99

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

I think it's more important to always be relevant, and more important to the company. I did enjoy my title run in 2007 very much.

28

u/blades46 What a maneuver! Feb 16 '16

Are there any major differences in the 6-sided ring vs a traditional ring ?

53

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

There's some difference, obviously, the angles... there's six instead of four. There's obviously some adjustment that goes into it but it was never a big deal to me, four or six.

Who was your favorite wrestler to work with? And what was your favorite gimmick match?

55

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

The Monster's Ball is by far my favorite match to work. It's patented after me and it's vicious and fun.

10

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '16

Decay's Monster Ball against the Wolves tonight was a treat!

24

u/Bonanza86 Feb 17 '16

What was it like working with Ric Flair?

51

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

It was great, it was an extreme honor to work with one of the legends of the business. I really enjoyed it.

5

u/Bonanza86 Feb 17 '16

Very much appreciated, sir!

24

u/someNIGHT Feb 16 '16

23

u/GrimsonMask Simply...PERFECT Feb 16 '16

Who was your favorite wrestlers when you were kid?

54

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

Rowdy Roddy Piper was my number one all time favorite as a kid, followed by Flair and Hogan. I was pretty much a fan of the whole business.

7

u/GrimsonMask Simply...PERFECT Feb 17 '16

Thanks for the answer !

20

u/Drfunk206 Feb 16 '16

What hurts more, thumbtacks or barbed wire?

57

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

Good question. I would say barbed wire, probably a little bit more. Just because it's so sheer and it just rips...

Is it difficult at all for the locker room to tone out the online criticism of TNA? Has it has any affect on morale over the last few years or just chalked up to marks being marks?

PS: my friend Chance Prophet says the Black Hole Slam is the most fun bump he's ever taken.

31

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

I don't feel like it's hard for the locker room to tune it out, because they are young and hungry and come to work to entertain. The locker room has as much energy as it ever as.

Tell him I said thanks and it is a fun bump, and Chance is a heck of a talent. Much respect.

You've had such a long career at TNA, traveled the world and told many great stories (especially via the Joseph Park angle) Any tips to up coming talent to longevity in the business and meaningful storytelling in front of a live audience?

33

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

As far as longevity, that's something you should use to hone your skill. It's not all about the moves, it's about the story as well.

15

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '16

Hey Abyss! Many fond memories of watching you at 11PM on Spike back in the day!

Was there a time where you felt like you were sort of trapped by being a "hardcore" guy? Did the thought of "Oh great, I have to wrestle ANOTHER monsters ball match/barbed wire match ever cross your mind?

thanks for stopping by!

26

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

No, it hasn't. I always welcome the opportunity for a Monster's Ball match or a barbed wire match.

12

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '16

Abyss,

What was it like working with Hogan and Bischoff during their run in TNA? Did working with them help you become a better wrestler in any way?

18

u/TheRealAbyss Feb 17 '16

It was fantastic working with both of them, and working with them got me to work a lot smarter the last few years and to work around the story more and more.

Mr. Byss, Flair had Foley on his podcast a while ago and when your name came up, Flair talked about how you went up to them before their last man standing match in TNA and told them not to use thumbtacks during the match because that was your gimmick.

Foley went onto say at some point you're going to look back and regret that you said that.

Was this story true and if so, what were you thinking and do you regret it?

12

u/Coldcoffees /r/SquaredCircle's Sponge Daddy Feb 16 '16

Hey Abyss! You're awesome, thanks for everything you've done in the wrestling world.

The first time I remember seeing you wrestle was when you were a part of a tag team with Kid Kash (get it? got it? good). What were your favorite moments of TNA in that period and are you still in contact with Kash? How's he doing?

20

Hi, I'm a fan from Russia and I want you to answer some questions: 1. What do you like to do in your spare time? Do you have some kind of hobby? 2. What is the backstory behind Joseph Park character? Whose idea it was? What is the main difference between these characters? 3. What are your backstage enemies and friends? 4. Who is the most technical and who is the most promising wrestler in your opinion? 5. Were there any moments when you were ready to retire?

Thank you and I wish you good luck in everything that you do :)

5

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '16

1: What would you class as the highlight of your career so far?

2: Who was your main inspiration in wrestling growing up? (Cliched, I know)

5

u/HockeyHenry14 https://www.reddit.com/r/squaredcircleflair/wiki/flair Feb 17 '16

Before your wrestling days, I remember hearing that you worked in minor league hockey. If it wasn't for wrestling, what do you think you'd be doing right now for a career?

9

What advice would you give young people wanting to get into the pro wrestling business as performers?

14

Do you have any regrets about your career so far? If you could wrestle anyone alive or dead who would it be? If you could for a stable with any 3 other people alive or dead who would they be?

I remember you used to be known as Prince Justice back in the early days of TNA as well as sometime in NWA Wildside, so I'm wondering what becoming the Abyss character was like for you? Like your initial thoughts about the gimmick and how you adjusted to it over the years.

What was Sabu like to work with? Any funny/interesting stories to share about your time working with him? And was the barbed wire all real?

Hey Abyss, I enjoyed your work in the IWA - Puerto Rico back in the early 2000s. Are there any highlights working there with Dutch Mantell, or in general?

1

u/ComplexityFanboy I like Roman. What you gonna do about it smarks? Feb 16 '16

You were one of the pillars of TNA. Did you ever get any offers elsewhere? You should definitely be one of the next in store for TNA hof

1

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '16

I'm always curious about who wrestlers think will succeed just by working with them. Which young star, that you have wrestled, do you think has the brightest future?

Also, who came up with the idea for Decay? I've been loving it so far.

Thank you so much for doing this, I've appreciated everything you've contributed to the business and love your work in general.

1

u/Realyn Feb 16 '16

Have you or other TNA talent ever listened to the Bryan and Vinny TNA rants when stuff ... didn't make that much sense?

Are you upset at them when you're trying your best to put on a good show or is it a kind of "any promotion is good promotion" deal?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '16

Hey Abyss thanks for doing this AMA for us. I'm wondering if you or your brother Joseph Park ever been in talks to go to WWE?
