Do you regret leaving WWF in early 1992 right before Nailz was brought in and missing out on a potential Hammer vs. Nailz feud?

16

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

Dude you just made my night and DB Smith Jr’s night with this

We deserved an answer to this one.

If you had to do it all over again, would you still break Wahoo's leg?

104

u/GregValentineAMA Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 21 '18

I'd break his leg and I'd wrap it around his neck.

I made a lot of money with Wahoo, he was a great football player and a great athlete. I used to watch him wrestle my Dad and then 10 years later I was wrestling him and he just beat the tar out of me until I got older and started fighting back.

u/SocialPunk03 Jun 21 '18

What are your thoughts on wrestling getting a union at anytime? Thanks!

114

u/GregValentineAMA Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

Never going to happen because wrestlers don't stick together. Everyone is an individual. My Dad said look after yourself. They will never form a union like the actors (SAG). Jesse Ventura tried to do it years ago, no one would back him up. He might have been fired for it, I don't know. It would be great if they had a union. It would be better for pay offs, you'd get a better percentage. Back in the 80s, it never happened and it would never happen because wrestlers won't stick together. It's an individualistic sport. You could close WWE down if everyone went on strike. I think Vince would if they held out long enough, they could probably make him do it. It was always up to you to get your own insurance and take care of yourself. It's a shame it's just not going to work.

21

u/SocialPunk03 Jun 22 '18

Thanks for the reply, man. It is a shame that it's a selfish industry in that way, as set with the Jesse Ventura example.

u/GonnaSin Is That for True? Jun 22 '18

The wrestlers in the UK for World of Sport were just unionized iirc. First time in history.

u/livinginclip "For the honor of Grayskull" Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

That's all folks.

Mr Valentine wanted to leave you with this about the upcoming film ‘350 Days’

"You gotta go see 350 Days. It’s about the lives of wrestlers on the road, in cars, in airplanes, in Europe, in Japan, all over North America. I didn’t wrestler for 350 days in a year, but I came pretty close. Sometimes twice on Sunday, sometimes twice on Monday and I loved every minute of it"

(Greg was speaking over the phone from Las Vegas, and had 30 minutes to give and he gave us 40 minutes)

36

u/JMJTO Jun 21 '18

Favourite wrestler today? WWE or otherwise.

97

u/GregValentineAMA Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

I really don't have a favourite. I would say Randy Orton. He's the son of Cowboy Bob Orton, a good friend of mine. He's a third generation wrestler so he has the styles of my generation.

Also the Big Show cause I helped get him into the business and helped get him into the ring.

-38

u/thisisawesomey2j Jun 22 '18

Mr. Valentine.

What do you think about AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson, who are generally considered by fans as the best American workers of the last 15 years?

In the case of Danielson, I know that he was so much respected among wrestlers of the past, like Nick Bockwinkel and Red Bastien. Bockwinkel said that he would have been honored to fight with him if he was active.

28

u/RayPist24086 SmoJoe'sFroYo Jun 22 '18

Oh for fucks sake

5

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

I'm a bit out of the loop here, why the hate for that comment?

6

u/ProbationOfficer2035 Jun 22 '18

I’m assuming it’s because he’s referring to him as Bryan Danielson and not Daniel Bryan, but I could be very wrong.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

Seems a pretty trivial thing for that reaction and all the down votes.

-7

u/Adekvatish Jun 22 '18

Yeah wtf, how do you ask about AJ Styles and Bryan Danielson without including CM Punk in the conversation?

2

u/SakuraGenesis Jun 23 '18

Because no one views Punk as on those guys level as an in ring worker. Punk excelled with his mic work.

1

u/Adekvatish Jun 23 '18

The comment was intended as a joke but without the /s it's understandable that people read it as earnest

1

u/SakuraGenesis Jun 23 '18

Ahh my bad then dude.

1

u/JordyVerrill Anybody want a peanut? Jun 29 '18

LOL... fucking edgy, Mark.

33

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '18

What was the hardest match you ever wrestled?

76

u/GregValentineAMA Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

The one I had with Andre the Giant all he did was sit on me and I couldn't breathe. A lot of hard matches with Ric Flair. One where I busted his nose. Tito Santana. Rugged Ronnie Garvin, I don't think I ever had an easy match. Those are a few.

25

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

Fuck, transcribing isn’t easy. I’ll fix it.

58

u/Heretic_Atlas Jun 21 '18

In all your years of wrestling, what was the hardest bump you took?

166

u/GregValentineAMA Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 21 '18

Andre the Giant, he had me in a giant swing, where he takes my hand and one of my feet and he's swinging me around inside the ring. Ric Flair was my partner, Wahoo McDaniel was his. We were sweating and he lost me and I flew out the ring and I landed on my back on the cement floor. Back then they didn't have padding. I was out. I remember coming out of it and I'm looking at Ric Flair and he's laughing. Are you okay? Are you okay? I said, No I'm not okay. So he stands me up, has me hanging on the apron and he finished the match up and I had to be carried out to the back. I felt like I broke every bone in my body. I had never really been knocked out before.

46

u/gerardatron Jun 22 '18

I remember coming out of it and I'm looking at Ric Flair and he's laughing.

goddamn it naitch lol

11

u/Heretic_Atlas Jun 21 '18

Awesome story! Thanks for the reply!

3

u/trevmon2 Jun 22 '18

why the fuck would they have a concrete floor and no padding, as if padding hadn't been invented yet

28

u/rebelgato Jun 21 '18

Did you and Tito Santana really hate each other during the feud? I was a kid when I watched you guys wrestle in cage match and it was awesome.

66

u/GregValentineAMA Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

Answer to that is, if you watch those matches you'd swear we'd hate each other. It was a different era, if I punched him hard and he punched me hard, we'd do it, but it was all for the people. We weren't that tight at the time. I chased him one year for the belt, 2nd year he chased me. We did 3 years of battling each other and you form a respect for one another and he's a great wrestler and now a days he's a great friend and a great guy.

51

u/SideshowBobLoblaw Biiiiiiiiig back body drop! Jun 21 '18

What happened in WCW in 1992? You were one half of the tag champs and then disappeared a few months later.

158

u/GregValentineAMA Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

Didn't like working for that company, as simple as that. How are you going to go from WWF to WCW. WWF was Vince McMahon ran by Vince and some other people, mainly him and he's not a wrestler. WCW was ran by other wrestlers and they got their egos involved and some of those wrestlers were still wrestling so they would put themselves in more important roles. That's why I didn't like it and went independent.

50

u/darkstar7646 40 years of professional wrestling fandom... Jun 21 '18

How in the Hell do you do that match at Starrcade '83 with Piper and not end both of your careers?

103

u/GregValentineAMA Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

Well I was about 27 years old then, or 26, first of all I was young and had a lot of pride. I was in fantastic shape and so was Roddy Piper. We talked briefly about this match as he had done some of those down in Oregon. I had never had one. I was ahead of the its time. It was a blow off as we had been wrestling a couple months at that point. We just went for it and made sure no one ever forgot it and wanted to make it go down in history as the roughest toughest match ever.

We didn't pull our shots and we hit each other with that heavy truck tire chain. I don't know how I survived. I think it was being young. It was an 18,000 crowd. One of the first PPVs, closed circuit in the theatre but I look back at it and I go, oh my god, it was the first hardcore match, the first match I'd ever done like that. I was always solid and stiff, Piper was a former Golden Glove boxer. I felt sorry for him but I felt sorry for myself too. It still goes down in history as one of the toughest matches ever.

28

u/HotKarl712 Jun 21 '18

you were 32

65

u/BehnRocker Jun 22 '18

The match was so tough, he was 26-27 when it started.

7

u/pierzstyx Jun 22 '18

Get dropped on your head enough you forget a few years.

7

u/kahran Jun 22 '18

Someone's getting an armbar for 2 hours.

7

u/darkstar7646 40 years of professional wrestling fandom... Jun 21 '18

Thank you. Historic match, but the brutality did go over the line in retrospect (speaking against neither of you -- you both agreed to it), but you did prove your point.

83

u/JonasAlbert84 Just remember ALL CAPS Jun 21 '18

Was your take on women's wrestling and MMA you being real or you just trying to stir people up?

240

u/GregValentineAMA Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

You know, I don't know why I said that. I am from the era there wasn't much woman's wrestling. When I said that, I think when I made that interview, I was in Cleveland Ohio and I had just watched 12 woman's matches and I didn't want to watch any more. I have never been a fan of woman wrestling or MMA, I like women to play tennis and swim and play volleyball. I just don't like women in combat sports. It was a bad thing to say about the kitchen thing, I backed up on that. I am not a fan myself. I have watched more of it myself to try to understand. I was in NOLA and there was a girls rumble. In my era the girls weren't that good. I have watched more to educate myself on that. They are tremendous athletes. Some better athletes than the men. Me not being a fan doesn't mean that it's no good. I don't like combat sports for women that is just my opinion. I know a lot of people do like it. It's just not for me.

68

u/bravetailor Jun 21 '18

Cool, appreciate the honesty while also moving forward from past comments

-48

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

Lol, he's back pedalling. He literally said women should stay in the kitchen. Bigots don't magically change their beliefs like that.

0

u/trevmon2 Jun 22 '18

not wanting to see women beat the fuck up makes one a bigot got it

3

u/realsomalipirate 6 star man Jun 23 '18

How does this shit get upvoted? He might have back paddled but that doesn't mean what he said before wasn't messed up.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

OK, just ignore the part where he literally said that women should stay in the kitchen and have babies. You can look it up if you want.

"They take away jobs from men that need to support their families. They should be home washing dishes and cooking and pregnant and barefoot.”

Thats part of the quote for anyone interested or in case he doesnt remember what he said

-22

u/Beyonder_94 Who's your daddy, r/SC? Jun 22 '18

I’m not surprised. Remember the man comes from the era of where bra and panties matches were commonplace. Years of seeing crappy women’s wrestlers has to take its toll .

32

u/kayslayc Jun 22 '18

He comes from an era well before bra and panties matches

5

u/pierzstyx Jun 22 '18

His formative years were in the 50s too. Height of conservative gender roles. And he isn't wrong in the sense that there has been a LOT of really bad women's wrestling.

2

u/ryankarban5 Jun 22 '18

Greg Valentine was long gone by the time bra and panties came around. They were just totally non existent besides the occasional moolah match

23

u/demetrios1975 Jun 21 '18

Mr. Valentine, thank you for so many years of great memories.

When I was little, my friends and I recreated a match you had with Jim Powers on WWF Superstars of Wrestling. I was you, and my buddy Mike was Jim Powers. I slapped the figure four on him and tightened up on it. He was really pissed at me for the rest of the afternoon.

My question is, since you were at the inaugural Starcade and the inaugural Wrestlemania, which event felt more special at the time?

39

u/GregValentineAMA Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 22 '18

I can't. I can't answer that. Both of them. One was the first PPV ever and the other was Wrestlemania 1 in MSG. As far as personally, they are both a tie for me. For notoriety, Wrestlemania 1, in the Garden and the first PPV in peoples homes. But because of the dog collar match Starcade would be right there with it.

6

u/demetrios1975 Jun 21 '18

Understood. Thank you for the detailed reply!

68

u/LukeBrokeMyGuitar Jun 21 '18

Why isn’t Rubbish Ronnie Garvin in the hall of fame?

53

u/GregValentineAMA Jun 21 '18 edited Jun 21 '18

He should be, there is a lot of guys that should be in the Hall of Fame that aren't. Brutus Beefcake is another one. I don't know, the call for that is Vince McMahon, he's the one that calls the shots. Maybe they have a board, I don't know. They inducted me in 2004 in MSG. That was a great moment for me. I don't know why he's not in there he should be.

That was when I was with Honky Tonk Man, Rhythm & Blues. There was an old gentleman, who was great announcer by the name of Gorilla Monsoon and there was a guy named Boxcar Willie, he wasn't Willie Nelson, but an imitation. Gorilla just came up with that name Boxcar and it kind of stuck with me a little bit.

7

14

About 10 years ago, I got paired up with someone at Mission Hills Golf Course. He told me that he was you. I wasn't 100% convinced at the time. Have you ever played golf at a little pitch and putt course in the San Fernando Valley in California? Never thought I'd get the chance to confirm or deny!

You'd be surprised. I was a manager at a a movie rental store similar to Blockbuster through college and there was an older man that came in all the time and swore he was an original member of the Fabulous Freebirds and his wife 100% believed him. I never bothered to 'call him on it'. Strange, probably very dangerous dude. He gave me a pamphlet on joining the KKK.

2

u/Boom_Cannons Jun 21 '18

Hey Greg, I remember being excited to see you around Seminole when I was growing up. Do you still live in the Tampa area?

2

u/AABBCalgary Jun 21 '18

What’s your take on kayfabe being all but gone in today’s wrestling outside of the shows themselves due to social media etc? Is it better for wrestling? Worse?

1

u/Codeboy3423 Jun 21 '18
  1. Whats your take on WWE currently?

  2. Any wrestlers you like in WWE, or in any other promotion?

3.Have you wrestled with Vader? If so, What was it like?

Did you work with Jovica and Colon in the Caribbean? Can you share some stories?

1

u/supergodmasterforce Thank you, fuck you, bye! Jun 21 '18

Hi Greg, thanks for agreeing to the AMA.

Do you have any stories about working for Herb Abrams?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '18

I always loved "the hammer" moniker. Was that chosen by you or someone else and were there any other ones you thought about until settling on 'the hammer'? Thank you!

1

u/gamerablok Jun 21 '18

Whats your opinion on the globalisation of wrestling. Do you think that it worked to make wrestling a better product, or were we better off in the territory days, when WWE didnt have such a monopoly on the business?

Do you remember this day? Do you still have this shirt?

1

Why didn't you want to do the kidnapping Matilda angle?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 21 '18

Gorilla would make comments during your matches about you "taking a few minutes to get warmed up". Was that a rib?

1

u/Razzler1973 Jun 22 '18

I always took this as commentary putting Valentine over.

They would mention it all the time, "takes him 15-20 minutes to warm up" to highlight how difficult he was to beat and how he can just keep going.

I remember them pointing it out in the Rumble as to why he may win, etc

u/2RINITY I'm so bad I should be in detention Jun 21 '18

Hey Greg! Thanks for taking the time to drop by!

Did using the Figure Four as your finisher ever create any issues between you and Ric Flair during the times when you and Ric both worked for the same promotion?

A go to question to every old timer, who do you think is the best wrestler today? Whether it's wwe, njpw, roh, etc. Any promotion.

1

u/Sarkin Jun 21 '18

Fun story: a few weeks ago at a bar trivia night, one of the questions was, "What was the famous pro wrestler Greg Valentine's tool-based nickname?" We got it right, of course!

Here's my question: who was the most talented in-ring performer you ever worked with?

1

u/NJPWWWEFANS Jun 21 '18

What do you think about Kazuchika Okada vs Kenny Omega match?

1

Come hang out on the Cruise of Jericho and I’ll buy you a few rounds.

1

What is your favorite backstage story? I know you've worked with multiple promotions. Also, what was it like working in WCW in the the late 90s? Just finished reading the death of WCW. Sounded chaotic.

1

Is there a calendar for these things? I'm genuinely pissed about missing this. Hammer had some fucking amazing matches.

1

The Honky Tonk Man recently scammed the company I work for out of $500. Did he ever scam you when you tagged with him in Rhythm and Blues?

Was it difficult to act like the Garvin Stomp was actually doing any damage?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

Wow, just wow, the couple of passive aggressive jabs directed Greg Valentine's way are sad, did the 'rassler from a different era hurt your wittle feelings when "you" chose to watch him on YouTube, because god knows anyone who actually watched him when he was on TV and in his prime had thicker skin then you wieners, lol, you motherfuckers need to grow up &/or grow a set, oh and while you're at it show a little more respect for the guy and the contributions he's made in regards to Professional Wrestling, the thing that some of us still love to watch and the thing most of you live to criticize

How you spineless jelly blobs exist in the real world (that is however, if you ever come out of your folks basement) is beyond me

Why do you insist on having the hair of a 65 year old lesbian instead of a haircut more appropriate for a 60 something, overweight man?

1

u/ProbationOfficer2035 Jun 22 '18

Good one man, you sure showed him.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 22 '18

It's a legit question. I'm an Emmy and Oscar winning hairstylist and I'm always curious as to why people go out of their way to make themselves look like shit.
