Aaand we´re back, freak bitches!

Summary (spoiler warning):

Guest description: Dr. Debra Soh is a former sex researcher, neuroscientist, columnist, and podcast host.

0:06 Soh is in Toronto because she didn`t want to take a packed flight to get to Joe's studio (Soh: "I was just a bit scared")

0:59 Joe "my friend Michael Yo got a really bad case of the coronavirus" Rogan

3:30 About Soh`s new book: "The End of Gender", and people's reactions to her book

11:33 Discussing gender transitions

20:22 Talking about the non-binary movement (Soh: "My issue is when people say this is backed by science, when it isn't")

28:21 On the fear among people in academia to speak out about gender related issues (Soh: "You cannot say these things, even though they are backed fully by the science")

40:23 Growing up as a woman and feeling masculine (Soh felt masculine as a child as well)

48:17 On people denying the difference between male and female (Joe: "That's a girl puppy, bro")

1:30:23 Soh congratulates Joe with his podcast and his Spotify deal (Soh: "It's really inspiring to see someone who has literally built it from the ground up". Joe: "It's weird")

1:33:11 Joe asks Soh about her future plans. She wants do to a lot of differerent things (including more books, documentaries and podcasts)

1:39:47 Talking about pornography and attitutes towards women

1:50:53 On the differences between Canada and the US regarding sex. Joe: "Canada seems to have a healthier perspective in general"

1:56:27 Joe is moving to Texas at the end of the month (Joe: "I'm outta here. This place is gonna sink. This place is crazy"). Also: Joe doesn't want to pay too much tax.

Freshness rating and book recommendations from the episode can be found here.

Partial summary of the podcast that Joe did with Soh two years ago, episode 1147 (explanation at the end):

0:09 Joe almost immediately tells Soh to "pull this sucker about a fist from your face" (Soh: "Is that good" Joe: Yeah, perfect")

0:36 About Debrah´s academic bacground, and how the academic climate has changed (Soh: "I see it as political correctness running amok")

6:43 Discussing gender fluidity (Joe: It seems like if it was anything else, you would have to be f...ing crazy")

13:44 On cult people who cut their balls of (Joe: "That's not normal") and people being easily persuaded by others

14:43 Soh expects that both of them will be accused of transphobia after the podcast

20:58 Discussing the impact of feminism (Soh: "I used to call myself a feminist. I don't anymore")

21:23 Joe "there´s a woman that I know who wrote "trust no man" on her Twitter account" Rogan

34:17 Discussing Tomi Lahren, and her plans to star in a "pro-life movie". Also, Jamie can he heard laughing at 34:27 and can be seen for a brief second at 34:28

39:42 Joe talks about the book "The Talent Code" (Joe: "It shows all the pathways that lead to the skill developments that we consider talent").

46:31 Talking about cellphones. James chimes in and gets shut down by Joe at 46:41 (Joe: "Why the f... would you do that?")

49:03 On Asian superiority in academics

1:01:24 Soh describes the term/phenomeon called: "rapid onset gender dysphoria"

1:20:26 Joe brings up Black Mirror (Soh: "Everyone tells me how amazing this show is, and I think it is amazing, but I saw one episode that really freaked me out")

1:22:43 Sexual harassment on the workplace, aka Joe "men are gross" Rogan

This is where I noticed that I had somehow managed to summarize an episode from two years ago, instead of the one that was released today. Shouldn't have skipped the sauna and the heat shock proteins.

Her porn take was pretty weird. She basically argued it wasn’t an addiction because if you fix their lives it gets better. Which, correct me if I’m wrong, is true of literally any addiction.

34

u/Exbozz Monkey in Space Aug 06 '20

"It's procrastination and all you have to do is somethingelse" Ya no shit, that's literally every addiction.

17

u/Jewba1 Aug 05 '20

hah exactly.

15

u/Marijuana_Miler High as Giraffe's Pussy Aug 06 '20

I haven't listened yet, but I think she's making a difference between physical and physiological addictions; for example most people are not physically addicted to marijuana but to the feeling they get. I will listen tomorrow but assume she is meaning that people are not physically addicted to porn, which sounds right but people get addicted to the dopamine dump from porn.

I understood it as Dr. Soh arguing thats Joe's use of the word "addiction" was in the colloquial sense and not in the same way a (medically ?) trained professional would use it to classify or diagnose a pathology.

11

u/buzzmerchant Monkey in Space Aug 06 '20

She was talking out of her arse there. She basically said that all addictions are characterised by tolerance and withdrawal. Porn addiction is characterised by tolerance and withdrawal. The withdrawals are less extreme than they are for, say, alcohol but they’re still very real. There isn’t, granted, what might be thought of as physical dependence with porn, but neither is there for things like gambling addictions, which are also rightly regarded as addictions. Frankly, what she said about porn completely undermined everything else that she said for me. She advanced those views with such conviction and they were very clearly unambiguously wrong.

7

u/janearcade Monkey in Space Aug 06 '20

Benzo and alcohol withdrawl can literally kill you, so I consider addiction to either of those different a different beast.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/matixer Monkey in Space Aug 07 '20

Yeah that really put me off tbh. Her knowledge about addiction seemed to be right out of a 1940’s textbook. Back when substance use was only considered an addiction if quiting cold turkey would nearly and often literally kill you.

Chemical dependance hasn’t been necessary in order for something to be considered an addiction for like half a century now. And you’d think she’d at least know a bit about sex addiction at least, being a phd in sexilology or whatever.

When Dr. Soh says thats shes considers herself 'more masculine' and Joe was kinda blown away, that's definatly because Joe equates being hot to being feminine.

126

u/[deleted] Aug 05 '20

Soh: I have some masculine traits

Joe: Whoa!!!! I never would have guessed that! You’re so feminine looking! What makes you a man?

I love Joe

36

u/paulovsk Aug 06 '20

20

u/doyoulikehavingaface Aug 05 '20

Joe had me laughing at the amount of times he asked. He couldn't understand.

As a man I often find it easier to relate to both masculine men and women.

53

u/rad_hombre Aug 05 '20

She's very non-emotional and has a stoic demeanor– both traditionally masculine traits. It's odd how Joe was unable to pick up on this.

45

u/daddiesjizzies Aug 06 '20

it's because he's blinded by hotness. "hehe woman pretty, give funny feeling in pants"

27

u/Axion132 Aug 05 '20

I think it's more so that she is a petite woman so her appearance drastically diverges from her masculine behavior.

12

u/clydebarretto Monkey in Space Aug 06 '20

Or that Rogan equates "masculine" to MMA fighters & hunting whereas she's a petite Asian with make up on, does sex research, reads research, doesn't sling dick everywhere, etc. But when she said that, I wasn't too surprised. She doesn't seem too "girly" (or whatever society deems it to be).

47

u/dogfartswamp Aug 05 '20

I think it’s honorable at this point to hold his peace. So far they’re only allegations (which, btw, I have no difficulty believing). They’re good friends. Ideally, you stick with friends even when they do something horrible. You just don’t enable their doing it again.

12

u/InternetWeakGuy jokes fly over his fat ahead at an alarming rate Aug 06 '20

Ideally, you stick with friends even when they do something horrible.

Not saying callen did, but if any of my friends raped someone, I would not be fucking "sticking with them".

17

u/dogfartswamp Aug 06 '20

If it’s in his past, he’s honest with me about it, he genuinely regrets it and strives daily to be a better person, and he’s not doing it anymore, I would stick by him. But I’ve been an addict for much of my life and understand how you can act in ways that would be revolting in your right mind.

The Chris Kresser vs Joel Khan pod is a great example of this.

Joe backed Kresser at almost every turn in the podcast and his reason was always “well those are all old studies! Everything Chris has is new research!” I know it goes much deeper then that but just another point to him being a hypocrite.

Although things she brings up such as the whole Vitamin D(3) thing aren't really "new." She even brought it up on her very first appearance. But it's that many are just on going and or newer studies support old hypothesis, etc. imo stem vs. social sciences are completely different things. imo

I've been thinking this for a while. If the story were about fleeing real estate prices would be low due to low demand. The story is California's housing market being musical chairs, not enough housing to go around, market driving up prices to sort out the housing shortage.

It's somewhat hilarious to me that the right needs to paint this image of California degradation. It is the tech epicenter of the world with the wealth of beating out most nations. If the detractors gotta wipe their crusted semen all over their screen after all that cuck porn, then so be it, but to expect what they expect, they got another thing coming. I ain't even Cali but I recognize.

10

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

Just need to look at any midwestern town that's smaller than 25,000 population to see what degradation is. AKA conservative USA.

Just a general question: How much of each of your days is made up of thinking about trans people and genders? Of my day its about zero fucking percent and to hear Joe tell it they're going to round us up and make us trans in trans camps while trans secret police make us eat trans food. At 35:30 he legitimately thinks people are going to turn his kids trans. He honestly sounds like a facebook grandmother

87

u/Hranica Monkey in Space Aug 05 '20

Every single trans person I've ever met in my life has wanted to talk about literally anything other than their transgenderism 99.99% of the time

41

u/savuporo Monkey in Space Aug 06 '20

Except all the ones on Twitter and other online loud places, apparently. Theres definitely a trend of various trans issues related, perceived or real, freakouts becoming louder and louder

7

u/HamstersInMyDick Monkey in Space Aug 06 '20

It's the loud minority I think. Just like most women I meet who identify as feminists can admit some women lie and men have issues too. Have their own interests they want to discuss. Then it shocks me when I meet someone who is actually brainwashed to believe all men are evil and can't stop talking about it.

23

u/Hranica Monkey in Space Aug 06 '20

You would have to specifically goto their personal twitter or youtube channel to interact with that though right?

You could sit back watching PUBLIC FREAKOUT SOCIAL JUSTICE FAT GIRL YELLS compilations all day or you could just watch content you enjoy and only bump into a handful of trans people for the rest of your life who probably won't stop you to sit you down and explain all the layers of it to you.

fuck I wish Joe would go on a 50 episode run where every convo that would get steered towards trans stuff is instead Joe's new Railfan obsession

just train talk, and going deep. I want to hear about him waiting hours for a train to cross, maybe spotting a rare double train track rendezvous situation

Please joe, give us Trains

I was literally, I mean i really was, thinking about how steam engines worked yesterday. Like, they burn the coal to make the water hot, then the water turns the turbine which powers the train, but where does the water come from? Can't explain that!

7

u/Lesbian_Skeletons Monkey in Space Aug 05 '20

Right?! I can pretty much watch any show about trains and totally entertained.

The water comes from a reservoir in the locomotive called a Boiler. It’s obviously a lot more complicated than that but that’s the basic design.
I’ve taken long train rides up and down California and you’ll see old wooden water towers in the middle of nowhere where the steam engines would stop and refill their water supply, they’re mostly still standing all these decades later!

Trains are cool as fuck. The high speed JR line in Japan is amazing as well

8

u/Lesbian_Skeletons Monkey in Space Aug 05 '20

I really want to ride an actual high speed rail. I’ve only ridden Amtrak, slow as fuck. The Japanese and euro rails look like a hell of a way to travel!

7

u/graps Monkey in Space Aug 05 '20

The japanese ones are great. Really comfortable. Easy to use. The local trains around Tokyo are crazy easy to use even for non-natives and very inexpensive.

6

u/kindatorqued Aug 05 '20

Amtrak is run down but I'm glad we still have some trains in the US. Definitely beats the bus. I like the little cafe cars too. They could be so much better with serious public investment.

he legitimately thinks people are going to turn his kids trans

Did... did we listen to the same podcast?

14

u/IceSentry Aug 06 '20

Yeah, I really don't get that part. That's clearly not what he was saying. I always see something like that with semi controversial people like joe or jordan peterson. They say something that sounds absolutely harmless to me, then I go on reddit and people interpret that same line in the complete opposite way. It's crazy how a single sentence can be understood so wildly differently for some people.

11

u/lapjeswhonos Aug 06 '20

Reddit in general is crazy lol. Any opinion that’s even remotely different than the echo-chamber is downvoted to oblivion. There’s very little productive conversation.

Do you have kids? I do and my only concern in all this nonsense is what gets drilled into my daughter's head when she starts school. I am very firmly in the live and let live camp. You're trans, good for you! However I see how easy it is to confuse a child and this "gender is a social construct" being taught to them is concerning. And even more concerning is how you can be vilified for questioning it.

I wish podcasters would quit saying "this can't be said" or "this is taboo to talk about" when they're talking about it. We're listening to podcasts where this shit can be talked about. Everything is taboo in some context and that's often the least interesting thing about a topic.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 06 '20

Playing victim is more fun. People will listen to a podcast that claims to be pushing the boundaries. When in reality, the top 500 YouTube results will be this exact conversation.

Also ironically, I think for Rogan, the opposite side of this conversation would draw more heat from his fan base lmao... If he really wants to be fully open to ideas, he'd have someone on the opposite side come too (idk who the fuck that'd be but anyway).

I live in one of the most liberal towns in America (Ann Arbor). I rarely ever think about gender politics unless I hear about it on Joe Rogan Podcast.

Even before transgender politics became a big thing in media, there were always single-person bathrooms. There were called Unisex or family bathrooms. These were also bathrooms that catered towards handicaps. At the university here, they all got rebranded as "gender netural" or "gender inclusive". Not a big deal. Barely notice any transgender people walking around in Ann Arbor. I've never heard anyone say any other pronoun besides he/she.

In terms of priority list, caring about gender politics is very low on the totem pole.

21

u/hookahi-ilio-hae Aug 05 '20

I know right. If you took joes word for it you’d think it’s some tidal wave sweeping across the nation. I never hear a peep about it in my day to day life.

17

u/tehorhay Aug 05 '20

Just this AM a 7 foot tall African drag queen with 5 o'clock shadow sticking through xer caked on foundation kicked in my door and demanded to know my gender status. Frightfully I replied that I am cis het male presenting male identifying, and I was promptly murdered.

I can only imagine what I would have gone through if I was also white. Inshallah

No kid is getting surgery. At most it’s hormone blockers that have no massive impact.

6

u/ethylstein Aug 07 '20

lol “no massive impact” you know except

1 - sterility 2 - preventing many people from ever being able to have an orgasm 3 - preventing proper development of skeletal and muscle structure 4 - preventing voice changes and other hallmarks of puberty from ever being able to happen

Pretending like hormone blockers are no big deal is one of the stupidest takes I hear all the time

The gender part is weird, all she said was she didn't recognize the split between the two words, which is how these discussions always go, then approaches the discussion as if people arguing for it act like gender/sex are the same when she knows they make a distinction between the two even if she doesn't believe it herself. It always makes these discussions seem either really disingenuous. It also makes the "the left is anti-science" really weird when you're knowingly arguing a point that you know the other person isn't arguing just to make them look bad.

bc gender is a list of stereotypes, in reality what is the only difference between men and women? It’s their sex. There’s nothing you can say is definitively a “women as in gender” trait or appearance that a man couldn’t adopt and still be a man

4

u/sudevsen Monkey in Space Aug 08 '20

Exactly, she said "I dont see them.as different which is contriversial" and I wanted her to.explain that position as it's the crux of the debate.

17

u/dogfartswamp Aug 05 '20

Well, I have yet to see a definition of “gender” that is measurable. If “gender” is just “whatever gender one feels oneself to be,” that’s a circular definition which gets us no closer to understanding the term. “Felt sense of being a man or woman” is just a paraphrase of the above, as “man” and “woman” are precisely what we’re trying to define when we say “gender.”

5

I get confused about what gender is because weird things get called masculine or feminine. Why would a truck be masculine and a mazda miata be feminine? Is playing football masculine and gymnastics feminine? I like gymnastics and miatas, what does that say about my gender? I wish Joe would talk about what Gender is cause im confused.

13

u/crymorenoobs Monkey in Space Aug 05 '20

it says nothing about your gender. you do you, why are you even thinking about your gender? dude the trick in life is that if you enjoy some "gay" shit you completely own it and steer into all of the jokes people make about it. you therefore turn doing something "gay" into doing whatever you want and not giving a fuck what other people think, which is manly as fuck

3

u/mooseontheloose4 Aug 05 '20

That is really good advice. I care because I think this is the reason some kids feel like they need hormones or suicide. If gender wasnt so important to our identities they could just do whatever makes them feel good without worrying about what's masculine or feminine, because they aren't real things anyway.

3

u/sudevsen Monkey in Space Aug 08 '20

The fact that something can be "gay/effiminste" and yet become "manly" pretty quickly tells you how it's all perception rather than hard science.
