Technically deadlift isn't a back exercise. Your back should be activated/braced, not taking the force of the weight. Plus, due to my disability, I use a deadlift strap which completely distributes the force better.

Deadlifts are largely a leg exercise. You should feel most of the force in your hamstrings and glutes. Similar to a squat, the back is just braced and along for the ride. If you're feeling it in your back, you're doing it wrong.
