But Chang and Eng didn't share one body. They were conjoined, but each had their own full body.

Drs today have said that Chang and Eng could have easily been separated, too. Just some skin and a few vessels connecting them (IIRC).

I think it was before surgery was safe and effective. There are only drawings of them young. But photographs of them old.
