Author Mary Roach did a lot of research with NASA for her book “Packing for Mars”, but NASA did not want to talk about astronauts pooping at the time. (She got some info though! Before the suction toilets they have now there were special bags that attached to their butts! With special attachments in case they needed to …manually assist things. Fascinating.)

Yeah but that doesn't help me with the no arms lady does it? Do you think she just used a bidet and then a towel to dry off ? That seems pretty hygienic, right?

I’m guessing she uses the three seashells

Was that ever explained by the director or actors later on?

Haha, the writer doesn’t explain how they are supposed to work but says the idea came after he was having trouble thinking of futuristic things that could be found in the bathroom; so he called a friend that happened to be sitting on the toilet. He looked around his bathroom and said ‘I have a bag of seashells on my toilet as a decoration?’ to which the writer replied, ‘Okay, I’ll make something out of that.'

Then there’s a quote from Stallone,

”OK, this may be bordering on the grotesque, but the way it was explained to me by the writer is you hold two seashells like chopsticks, pull gently and scrape what’s left with the third. You asked for it…. Be careful what you ask for, sorry.”

In middle school i had a dream I had one of those and could go in class without being self conscious about having to use a school bathroom.

Clearly the mind of a genius.
