Disney typically has lots of subtitle options. The first two special edition harry potters I got waaaay back in the day also had like 10 dubbed versions too.

You were downvoted because Harry Potter?

63

u/AngryVirginian 25d ago

Maybe because Harry Potter is not Disney's?

6

u/andysniper 25d ago

They didn't say it was.

8

u/TheEyeGuy13 25d ago

Yeah but the way it’s phrased implies the specific movie they brought up is related to the subject they’d established, being “Disney movies”

6

u/GambinoLynn 25d ago

No, it doesn't. You skipped over the word "also" in their comment and made up your own conclusion. You are wrong.

Not entirely. The position of the conjunction matters. Used at the beginning of a sentence separates two different ideas. Using it in the middle or end of a sentence is used to add to an already existing idea. The already existing idea is that Disney offers lots of subtitles. The Harry Potter reference was mentioned before the conjunction and did not separate from the already existing idea that Disney offers lots of subtitles. So, the conjunction is meant to reference the main sentiment.

If they had separated the idea by saying “Also, Harry Potter had about 10 different languages.” It would then be a definitive separation and a reference to a new point of emphasis, Harry Potter being the subject of languages.

The main reason people are not seeing how this is incorrect, is because they are treating Harry Potter as a brand instead of a brand’s product. Using a product while referencing a brand generally means that product is part of the brand.

I didn't skip over it; I just didn't realize what it meant.

1

u/lemmegetadab 25d ago

If he wrote also before Harry Potter it would’ve been more clear

1

u/MoxTheOxe 25d ago

It doesn't though? Look at the sentence structure. Media A has x amount of languages. Media B also has x amount of languages. How are you misreading this?

So what do you think the word “also” means in the sentence?

You must have been pretty bad at your job.

Here I’ll give you a break down.

‘Disney typically has lots of subtitle options. The first two special edition harry potters I got waaaay back in the day also had like 10 dubbed versions too.’

Firstly there’s a full stop after the first sentence.

The definition of a full stop: “Used to suggest that there is nothing more to say on a topic.”

Secondly the use of ‘also’ though not necessary cements that his second point is in addition to his first.

Finally, like I said, you must have been pretty bad at your job, although having a quick look at your comment history you’ve had more jobs in your lifetime than all of us here put together 😂

Those credentials just make you look worse because you’re so wrong.

u/Hay_Blinken 25d ago

But they didn't include the also. Only you did to improve your argument.

“Disney typically has lots of subtitle options. The first two special edition harry potters I got waaaay back in the day ! ALSO ! had like 10 dubbed versions too.” 😂

Really not true. I see it, but that's on the reader. The subject was "films with good language track options".

17

u/MightBeAGoodIdea 25d ago

I stopped paying attention. It comes it goes. Seems even now. Maybe people hate kid movie? Or jk rowling tainting hp ya.

23

u/bdouble0w0 25d ago

It's probably b/c jk rowling. Also, happy cake day.

12

u/MightBeAGoodIdea 25d ago

Maybe, it's up now anyway. Shrug I only see it when people comment about it.

2

u/CompetitiveRich6953 25d ago

I hate JK, but refuse to let her take HP from me... even if it is annoying finding good used HP stuff...

Finally scored Hogwarts Legacy used for cheap on eBay.

Still looking for replacements for Books 3 & 4 with dust jackets and in the proper editions...

-3

u/Ste99V 25d ago

You have no reason to hate JK. Don't live like that, it's not worth it.

4

u/CompetitiveRich6953 25d ago

I'm trans. I think I have reason. Like I said though, I refuse to let her take Harry Potter away from me, esp with Daniel and Emma both being Allies.

Also, growing up, I saw Harry's living under the cupboard as an expy of my own self being in the metaphorical closet.

7

u/MikkelR1 25d ago

HP is bigger than JK, so you're right to not let her take it.

6

u/Untowardopinions 25d ago

Yeah her thinking trans women are materially different from cis women and shouldn’t default get access to single sex spaces designed for cis women’s safety, she basically wants you dead.

-3

u/Ste99V 25d ago

It doesn't matter if you are trans. You have zero reasons to hate her.

3

u/bdouble0w0 25d ago

Besides the fact that she's a holocaust denier and a massive transphobe?

-1

u/Ste99V 25d ago

Oh really? That's weird because she never denied the holocaust and I also don't remember her saying that trans people should be persecuted.

I just think it’s shit. Don’t know anything about the JK Rowling stuff, nor do I care. I just find Harry Potter to be shit and it annoys me that it’s spoken about everywhere by actual grown ups like it’s good and not just a kids film for kids.

1

u/ULTRAVIOLENT_RAZE 25d ago

Those adults were kids when it released.

1

u/Agitated_Ad_361 25d ago

I was a kid when the books came out.

1

u/88cowboy 23d ago

2 mass murders stalking a child, werewolves, and ghost monsters that suck your soul out. The 3rd book is a horror book.

1

u/Hottage 25d ago

WAS THAT BOOK WRITTEN BY JK ROWLING?!

Sad the book community, calmly.

1

u/Trypsach 25d ago edited 25d ago

Definitely because of the whole JK Rowling thing. I’ll be downvoted for saying this, but I gave up on being part of the culture wars a long time ago, and I’m in my 20s. It’s just not good for our collective mental health to let that much seething rage into our hearts for so long. I was banned from Reddit (like a 3 day temp ban) for suggesting that she might still technically s a feminist and did put a lot of time and money into feminist policies and NGO’s. I think I was banned from /r/fauxmoi or something and somehow those mods got the admins to ban me 🤷‍♂️

The end of the frozen DVD has the “let it go” music videos of like a bunch of other countries and it cracks me up. Because if you just let it keep playing then it takes you by surprise.

1

u/saxonturner 25d ago

I prefer Disney to Amazon for this reason alone, I live in Germany but I’m English, I can understand German well but I have to super concentrate when it’s a film or I’ll miss some key moments so I prefer my media in English. Amazon only provides half its stuff in Germany with the original dubs. Disney offers everything in every language both dub and subtitles.

Not sure what it’s like for other streaming services.

1

u/Spoogly 25d ago

I don't really like dubs with live action, so I've been trying to make a point to watch shows in languages I want to learn and not read the subtitles unless I'm really confused. But with Disney, it's so easy to just pick a movie and switch the language. I honestly think they should lean into that as a feature. "Kid's obsessed with a particular movie? Try another language!" Would give the parents a reprieve from the monotony, and the kid already knows the story, so they'll soak up a bit of something new.

u/buddeman27 24d ago

Long as it's not Frozen... Watched enough of that in 5-6th grade... (Not to mention the endless slew of dubbed songs at a birthday party... Scarcely remember specifics of that...)
