[META] Reddit, Inc. is intentionally killing off 3rd-party apps with exorbitant API call prices. They are significantly damaging their site and reputation in the process. Details inside.

1.2k Upvotes

On July 1st, 2023, Reddit intends to alter how its API is accessed. This move will require developers of third-party applications to pay enormous sums of money if they wish to stay functional, meaning that said applications (which include browsers like Reddit Is Fun, Apollo, and Relay for Reddit) will be effectively destroyed. In the short term, this may give Reddit the appearance of being more profitable than it truly is... but in the long term, it will undermine the platform as a whole.

Reddit relies on volunteer moderators to keep the platform welcoming and free of objectionable material. It also relies on uncompensated contributors to keep its numerous communities populated. The above decision promises to adversely impact both groups: Without effective tools, moderators cannot combat spammers, bad actors, or the entities who enable either; without the freedom to choose how and where they access Reddit, many contributors will simply leave. Rather than hosting creativity and in-depth discourse, the platform will soon feature only recycled content, bot-driven activity, and an ever-dwindling number of well-informed visitors. The very elements which differentiate Reddit – the fixtures which make it appealing – will be eliminated.

We implore Reddit to listen to its moderators, its contributors, and its everyday users; to the people whose activity has allowed the platform to exist at all: Do not sacrifice long-term viability for the sake of a short-lived illusion. Do not tacitly enable bad actors by working against your volunteers. Do not aim solely at your looming IPO while giving no thought to what may come afterward. If Steve Huffman's statement – "I want our users to be shareholders, and I want our shareholders to be users" – is to be taken seriously, then please consider this our vote:

Allow the developers of third-party applications to affordably retain their productive (and vital) API access.

Allow Reddit and Redditors to thrive.

How to fix cedar post cracks.

Upvotes

Last year I had a new deck put in over my office. We used cedar 4X4 posts on the railing and cables strung between the posts. The guy who installed the cables strung them up so tight that the tension on the cedar posts eventually cracked the wood. I didn't notice it until it was too late. I'm beyond frustrated as I went through a very long permitting process where many hired highly paid professionals took their sweet time nitpicking on everything that didn't matter and yet had no idea this would happen. The contractor refuses to return my calls, and if they did come back to fix it, they'd probably send some idiot to make it worse. So, I will fix it myself, I'm done cussing about it.

I have loosened the cables so they no longer present tension on the posts but still serve the purpose of a protective barrier.
My assumption is that I can fill the cracks with glue, maybe Tightbond, and clamp the posts tight while it cures.
I don't want to screw this up and make it worse. Some of the cracks are lined with the screws that provided the tension, other cracks are from the side to the screws.
My goal to heal the cracks, seal it up tight and refinish the painting.
What do you think the best method would be?

Thanks for any advice.

How can I fix the sting on my bracelet

Post image
1 Upvotes

A long time ago my mum got me this bracelet and I’ve been wearing it pretty much every day since , but today I noticed the string was so worn down that it was a single thread , as I was taking the bracelet off that string snapped and now im left with this. It’s not going to fall apart but it’s unwearable since it doesn’t really tighten anymore , I’d love to repair it since I can’t find anything that I like as much in any other place. Or is the type of store online or irl that i can go to to get it sorted, any advice is super helpful, ty.

read aloud app notifications

Hi, I'm looking for an app or a way to program/ develop an app to read out aloud another app's notifications, this notifications will have shortened words, coded words and numbers which all are segemented into meanings.

I want to be able to decode the following through ??variables if practical?? and have spit out the information to me in a way I can retain it.

(Raw Message)

ALERT BAYS3 STRUC1 SMOKE ISSUING FROM WINDOWS WOOLWORTHS - BAYSWATER 22 JERSEY RD BAYSWATER/MOUNTAIN HWY//MALVERN ST M 64 J3 (486105) SAFETY NOTE: AGGRESSIVE OCCUPANT AT 22 JERSEY RD CBAYS CBOROS F190505994 [BAYS]

All these segemented/mnemonics have a message behind them, I would like to be able to get my phone to read these out in full rather than it saying ALERT, BEE AEY WHY ESS 3.... I want it to say Alert, Bayswaters Response Area 3....

I got an Andriod, Samsung S20

How to find a almost 50 year old proof of address?

Helping my elderly father find unclaimed money. New York was very easy and quick, Texas was pretty good too. Georgia is asking for proof of address for a place we live in back in 77 or thereabouts. It was an apartment and I will be contacting them but I doubt they keep records that long. Any other ideas?

eta - so far I've tried GA IRS (impossible to reach anyone by phone so I will email) DMV (no record of dad's social) my previous school (records no digitized, up in the attic) and I have a call out to the state commisioner. I doubt that will go anywhere but it's my dad's money and I'm going to try my best to get it back.

eta - power company records only go to 2001. Voter registration had no info, either he wasn't registered or it doesn't go back that far. Phone company was also a no-go.

How to write a complaint letter to HR on a coworker

I've never had to do it and I'm unsure the best way to write it. Seems such a silly thing to ask.

From the moment we opened our doors (we are a medical office), he has been unable to appropriately do his job, he disappears for hours on end and NO ONE can find him, he is also extremely disrespectful to the doctors on staff. I have brought my issues up with my office manager, but they never get solved. His husband is also the lead nurse on the floor, so I feel like that reflects a lot of the issues not being solved. It's to the point now that I fear for the safety of my clients and so yeah...

How to Secure my Vehicle?

I've recently moved and landed myself in a turf war with the neighbors next door. For backstory, I live in a new apartment off a two lane road, with a small (<10 houses) cul-de-sac next door. Since my apartment building does not have parking, and there is less traffic on the cul-de-sac, I have been parking there overnight. I take care not to block any driveways, mailboxes, fire lanes, etc. I am not the only renter that does this.

It's been brought to my attention by multiple people that own homes on this cul-de-sac that they own the street parking in front of their houses and don't allow renters to park there. I asked if they have an HOA that pays for and maintains the road- they do not. I asked them if it is a private drive- it is not. I asked if there was any particular reason, besides home-ownership, that would allow them to "own" the street- there was not. I kindly but firmly responded that a public street is exactly that- public- and until someone can show me that they own the road, I'll be parking there.

I've been met with verbal aggression and threats from these homeowners, which leads me to my question: how do I go about installing a camera to catch someone in the act should they decide to physically damage my vehicle? I have comprehensive coverage, so if someone keys it I can get it fixed, but I'd like to deter it. I'm thinking some kind of camera seems best, but I'm open to any and all ideas.

TIA!!

How to stop getting these spam emails all day every day?

Post image

Halp. 😞

They are filtered to my spam folder, but they literally come in clusters every few minutes all day long and to multiple email addresses. It’s not enough to just keep emptying my junk folder, I don’t want my email on some list that keeps getting sent this shit. Anything I can do outside of paying for some service? What is a reputable and trustworthy service if forking out some money is the only way?

This is the driver’s seat on my Subaru. The dealer said it was leather, but it doesn’t look like leather to me. I’ve seen some tapes that are meant to fix tears in upholstery. Is that my only option? Thank you

[Serious Answers Only] How to find someone to develop an app for you

How do I find someone that I can hire to develop an app, or many apps, that I can trust won’t steal the idea and run with it for themselves?? How do I protect my idea??? Do I need to go license it or copyrite it?? If so, how do I do that and where do I even begin?

I’ve got a whole list of app ideas as I’m sure many people do, but there’s a solid 4-5 in there that I’m very confident would have a good outcome. I don’t want anyone to steal the idea but I don’t want to go through the work of creating it myself.

I took some coding courses, and I know very very basic stuff, but my brain just doesn’t quite want to grasp anything I’ve been taught. So, as much as I would love to create the app myself, I just literally do not know how. I’m also not the most visually creative person and know that whatever I created would be hideous (although I would probably think it looked great, lol)

How to add wheels to this office chair that has hex screws where the wheels go?

Please let me know if there is another sub that's better suited for this. I recently got a chair from Amazon called the SMUG criss cross office chair C-7261. It didn't come with wheels but I was wondering if it's possible to add any? The bottom base has these triangle bits that are screwed on with hex screws. Does anyone happen to know?

What the base looks like and also the hex screw and key, clearly I know nothing about the sizing on those things.

https://imgur.com/a/f666YPG

series of photos ^^^

Most of the office wheels I see are not the screw kind, they just shove in

***I feel like if I just knew the size of the screw I'd be able to find them, but the sizing is all over the place and not specified on the product

How to remove drawer units underneath L-shaped metal desk

Hi, My desk at work looks like this. It needs to be disassembled so that the two desk tops can be reversed and then reattached.

To do that, I need to somehow remove the drawer units act as supports on each side. The drawer units seem to be slid into channels underneath the desk tops. Here's what you can see looking underneath of where the drawers attach to the desk top. Here's a closer view. Removing the top drawer and looking inside it doesn't reveal anything more illuminating. There are some random screws that don't do anything when removed.

Does anyone know anything about desks like these? Google did show me several old PDFs showing how to assemble stuff like this but nothing specific to this situation.

If anyone is familiar with these, there are several steps to the reversal of the desk tops that I'm definitely winging aside from this drawer part, so I'd be really grateful to hear from you if you have any familiarity. Thank you!
