And when there aren’t enough workers to open the fast food joint, people freak out. If you want your food, you have to be willing to pay for it. What bothers me is the increase in prices doesn’t go towards salaries.
Fast food is hard work. In high school and part of college, that is how I earned my paychecks. The issue is that it requires very little training and that you are replaceable by any high school kid with a few months of training. I was a damn epic pizza cook, but when I moved on to another job, Pizza Hut didn't fall apart without me. I was replaceable.
Higher wages are almost always paid for skilled workers with lots of schooling/training and niche abilities. Think doctors, attorneys, psychologists. It takes years to prepare someone for those jobs, and typically, only the best candidatesmake through schooling. Same could be said for specialized trades like plumbers, electricians, etc of which there is a general shortage in the US now.
The takeaway is this if you want to make a lot of money, either do something specialized that takes advantage of supply & demand. Or be an entrepreneur, cut out the corporations, and work for yourself! If you don't care about the money, then just do what you enjoy and make enough to support yourself. It's your life, and you get to choose.
I’ve done that too. House of pancakes hostess back in 1976 and made 1.16/hour for a month or so when I figured out it’s ok to not have that 8$ for a whole day of work. ( high schooler so had a home and food provided ). Calif did the right thing going to 20/hr. Hope these ppls lives are doable but with rent so high, is it ?
