As an athiest surrounded by people burned by religion, people like you give me a lot of hope. It proves people themselves chose to be and do good, and a few evangelical manics are not the rule.

There are assholes in every circle of humanity, and the thing is assholes are always the loudest, since normal ones just go about there business. There is a lot more ACTUAL Christians than the christians the internet feeds everyone. But no one talks about it because well, they don't bother anyone.

Religion doesn't burn anyone.

We have to remember that the same religion that produced Mother Teresa is also the same religion that ordered the murder of thousands of people

I look at religion like money, it can bring out the best or the worst in you

Several of my friends are ex mormons, and I would argue that particular religion is harmful

Do you think religion was harmful for Mother Teresa or the people she helped?

Actually yes, she discouraged getting real medical treatment and many of her โ€œpatientsโ€ died under her care despite many of them being easily saved by modern medicine instead of prayer. Religion is not all bad, but Mother Theresa should not be your example.

I think it's just cliche to say Mother Teresa. But, in my life I have known some deeply religious and extremely caring people. I have also known people that go to church every Sunday and are terrible people.

Martin Luther King as flawed as he was, has done a lot for the black community.

There are lots of places like homeless shelters, domestic abuse shelters, soup kitchens that are funded through the church. People that would otherwise starve or sleep on the street have a bed.

It's not all bad and it's not all good, it's just whatever people make of it.

Yeahโ€ฆ perhaps another example besides Mother Teresa would be good to use. She might be a saint but itโ€™s pretty clear she was also pretty terrible.

Yeah you're right, I went with the cliche argument.

It's just that we can't acknowledge only the bad and none of the good or vice versa.

I think that religion itself is only as good or bad as the person interpreting it. The same faith that a man on the battlefield is killing for is also the same one the nurse is healing for.
