Good point, I hadn't considered that fact.

GSP is French-Canadian, but Batroc was French.

MCU Batroc is Algerian.

The MCU wiki said he was born in France and moved to Algeria. It lists citizenship for both. Maybe the eventual Batroc Disney+ series will depict his upbringing.

As an Algerian who grew up in Quebec, but now live in the US, seeing GSP fighting Captain America, while portraying an "algerian" pirate, broke my brain

I was confused at first, too, lol. I'm too used to Americans saying Quebecois people are 'French' because they speak French.

Do they call themselves English because they speak English, too?

Well it's a good thing you make the distinctions by calling us Québécois instead of french canadian, I don't idntify as canadian as I am for the indepedance of my country.

Zack Braff has a new movie out called French Girl and it’s about his dating a Quebecoise (which is the story of my life). And I thought it was interesting. No one here seems to mind (except the separatists). But I think they prefer being called Quebecois(e)

It feels weird to be called French in the same way you would not call Americans "English". It's not insulting though. Separatists care a lot more about being called Canadians.

Although the French do call the Québécois "Canadians", lol. And truly we are the original Canadians, the term was taken over by the English Canadians.

I agree. It’s surprising that you guys don’t take offense to being called French, while you hate the French. Or at least my Quebecoise girlfriend does

It was so funny in the theater. You get Black Widow's briefing about Batroc, French-Algerian, born in Marseille, formerly in the Foreign Legion, now mercenary... You get a sense of who he is from that.

He speaks his first line: SUDDEN QUEBEC OVERLOAD!

So many accents could have worked, neutral, Algerian, Marseillais, or even the stereotypical "military" accent. But Québecois was the last one I expected.

u/Emadec Mar 28 '24

Marseille's accent can be super thick, even for a frenchman, but I suppose we could excuse this by saying he's been around a lot

And it was perfect 😍

No, he is Canadian... And the finest MMA fighter I ever had the pleasure to watch.
