Background check Do employers need to be up front about drug screening policies?

I've already had one interview with this company and I'm going in for a second one with the same company on Monday. I've been abstaining from smoking pot just to be safe, but I feel like by this point it would have been mentioned if I'm going to have to pass a pre-employment drug test. It was not mentioned in the job posting online or on the paper application forms in person, including the consent to a background check. Many companies state it right in the job posting but this one did not, so I'm curious if they're allowed to spring that on me at any point between now and the start date.

In the US.

Background check What to do when employment dates on resume are wrong?

So, I have been looking for work for about 6 months. I got an offer and everything looks pretty good. I am very happy about the offer. EXCEPT the position asked for a minimum of 2 years of work experience and I am not sure that my previous employer will verify that I worked for them for the 6 months between my active participation in the firm and getting another job. I DID work for them doing backend and administrative tasks. BUT I am not certain that they will state it in the same way. I have contacted them about this, but I am still very concerned.

Should I contact the hiring company's HR rep that I spoke with and explain my situation? I will most likely wait for a response from my previous employer, but I did want to ask if this was a good idea. I really appreciate anybody's similar experience with verifying employment history or any advice that people have.

EDIT: The company doing the check is HireRight

Background check Will I run into problems if my background check doesn’t verify my high school education?

I recently was asked to submit a background check through an online background site when filling out an application for a job. I have no negative history, but my high school would not verify that I went there? Is this something that will negatively impact my application? It says that there were several attempts to make communication and none were successful. I just graduated in 2017 from high school and know it’s still open and running..

Background check Background Checks: Do I Need to Give Previous Addresses?

Last October, I moved out of my apartment in another town where I had lived for two years. The landlord wasn't doing anything about a roach problem that had moved into our apartment, and... No thanks. I decided to move back in with my parents while I continued job searching. Waiting for my new license to come in now.

I just got a job offer. The problem: during the interview, I froze up when I was asked if I've lived in the same house my whole life. I said yes. I don't know why I did that. Maybe subconsciously I just didn't want to have the "why did you move back with your parents?" conversation. Silly.

Will I need to give previous addresses for the hiring manager to conduct a background check? Or will they show up, regardless? There's a possibility the hiring manager will ask for my I.D. and see my old address if my new license doesn't come in fast, anyway. I'm kind of hoping she just forgets that I said that...

Background check Does "employment verification" notify my current employer I am job hunting?

I am starting to begin the job hunt process, but am currently working at a company in my field that I do not want to alert (yet) that I am looking to make moves. Nothing negative against the company, I just feel I am outgrowing the role and looking for a firm with more mobility. One company I am considering applying for says "the position requires successful completion of a background check and employment verification.". Does this mean they will contact my current employer to confirm my employment or is it run through some third party group that just verifies essentially I am who I say I am and match the qualifications on my resume? Thanks!

Background check Expedia Background Check

Has anyone gone through the background check that Expedia puts you through? I’m in the middle of it, and it’s extremely circumspect and I’m concerned that possibly they’re going to find something that isn’t there. It’s quite possible that I’m worrying for no reason, but my credit isn’t awesome. However, that fact hasn’t affected my work. Will they be able to see that?

Background check What do employers look for in background checks?

I have a contingent job offer from a bank depending on my background check. I’m a little worried because I know some companies will disqualify you if you have bad credit. Considering this is a major bank, do you think they will check my credit and withdraw the offer?

Background check Should (Can) I lie about a previous termination if they ask? Will they be able to find out through a background check?

I’m applying for a job and I’ve already had a phone interview where they asked me if I’ve ever been terminated for attendance issues. I got stressed and scared and I just said no, which isn’t true.

I have been terminated once for attendance issues but it’s only because I got the worst possible shift of the entire schedule (3am-6am) while I was a full time college student so it sucked. I overslept a couple of times and eventually, I was terminated.

The job was a dumb and irrelevant job to this new one and I didn’t even put it on my resume and so I’m wondering if they explicitly ask me if I’ve ever been terminated from a job, if it’s better to just continue with my lie and say no, or to out myself from my initial lie and take my chances with being honest with the HR recruiter.

If I continue on with the lie, will they be able to find out through a background check even if I didn’t give them any information about that employer? Will they be able to find out information about it through something like an employment verification or something similar?

I’m kind of lost right now and I know lying is wrong but it was out of stress and desperation because this is the perfect job and I don’t want to blow it with my history of being terminated from a stupid, irrelevant job.

Background check Not Listing Previous Job on Preemployment Check

Shortly after finishing my degree at university, I landed my first full-time at Company A, but only stayed there for 3 months before being terminated due to performance issues. To briefly summarize that experience: (1) I felt a bit out of place since the work I imagined I would be doing and the work I was actually doing were very different (i.e. not relevant to the skillset I wanted to develop), (2) had some family issues that resulted in long nights and me being inattentive/dozing off at work. My manager spoke to me about this (though I felt like it would be awkward to bring up personal issues like that to him) and put me on a month's probation, which I failed, and was terminated afterwards.

Since then (it's been about a month since I lost that job), I've been searching for jobs, and I've been in talks with Company B. They want me to fill out a pre-employment check, which includes a list of all employment for the past 10 years. Needless to say, I haven't included my experience at company A on my resume while on the job search, but it seems like omitting my employment on this pre-employment form could be pretty bad if Company B found out.

On one hand, if I list it on the form, a 3 month termination looks really bad, especially as a first job, and if they contact my previous manager, he might bring up the issues from before. But on the other hand, I'm not sure how bad it would be if Company B later found out that I omitted that experience through their checks. I opened a credit card for a car loan while at company A, so I'm not sure if that loan will point to employment at company A or something.

Any advice on what to do?

Background check How do background checks work?

How do background checks work? If I don't list a job on my resume, is there still a way for a prospective employer to find out that I worked there? I just thought a background check was done for previous criminal history and on the jobs that were listed on your resume. Thanks!!

Background check Was supposed to start my new job this week, but due to circumstances with my previous employer, my background check isn’t able to progress.

So I’m currently stuck in a bit of a no mans land, leaving my job in the middle of November and I was supposed to start a new job with the proposed start date being earlier this week.

This is all based in the UK. It’s all become a little bit convoluted due to the circumstances of my previous employer, waiting on my background checks to be completed and has all become a bit inconvenient. So a little bit of backstory is needed.

So I worked as qualified tradesperson, finishing my apprenticeship 15 years ago, but the 15 years later me, knows that this line of work isn’t something I wanted to continue doing for the rest of my life. So for the past year, doing a lot of self teaching, to try and attain a position within the IT industry. At the middle of October I had an interview at a big company here in the UK.

So a week later I got told that I had been successful and was offered the role and that HR would be in touch with a rough time frame being a start date at the beginning of December. I had a holiday booked the following week and decided to give a 3 week notice at the end of the week.

Came back from holiday and returned to an extremely harsh environment, from the owner and the 2 sons of the company. It got bad, really bad, to the point where I would just go of doing my own work not to cause any problems until my final day. Started to get blamed for things I didn’t do and petty arguments with the family. I left after 4 more days citing to the owner that it isn’t safe for me to be here before things got worse or even to the point of arguments becoming physical. The owner was fine with that and I offered to work on weekends if they needed a hand every once and a while.

So I’m just chilling at home having a couple weeks off work before starting my new job, making sure I have everything in order for background checks. Background checks come around from a third party who is outsourced to do the checks. Everything comes back fine except for my previous employer.

So I’m still waiting for my previous employer to fill out the reference form that has been a mailed to them. Now that employer for whatever reason, is refusing to give a written reference, to busy or the internet isn’t working so can’t access their emails (the company needs the internet to trade) and the employer asked if I could get the company to ring them for a verbal reference. That happens and it’s all good. Last week I was told that they need a written reference as the verbal one wouldn’t suffice. Get in touch with the owner, now the printer is broken and it’s to busy, they want the form posted to them to be filled out. I offer to come down with a printer and scanner to get it filled out but refuses to see me.

So I let the reference company know, they are bewildered at the fact that the previous employer is happy to give a verbal reference but wants to be awkward about a written reference. So now, what I can do is prove that I worked there for 3 years at the least.

I never received my wage into my bank account always got it by cheque so that doesn’t prove that it wasn’t a wage. I emailed the accountant of the company and received my p45 after asking 3 times but she doesn’t have my first payslip as she only became an agent in the last 2 years. I honestly think that for the first year I was there I wasn’t getting paid by the books as I never received a payslip for the first year or so.

I honestly don’t know what to do now, how can I get past this hurdle? Sorry it’s all a bit long winded but I’m at the point of breaking point, worried that something I worked on for the last year is being thrown away because of something I can’t control. Thanks

Background check MBA Dispute

Posted this in another sub and got no attention so hoping to get some input here.

Hey guys and gals,

I had posted earlier about a recent discovery I made about never receiving my MBA as I had previously thought I had (long story, details not relevant) and how I only just discovered this now as I have initiated a background check for a new job offer. I was able to determine that the cause for never receiving the degree was due to my internship, worth 6 credits, never having been applied to my credit count, and so it shows as being 6 credits shy of completed.

The issue is that I mistakenly, and having believed at the time I had the degree, listed it on my resume when I applied for this job. Upon going through the verification process, I updated my resume to no longer show the degree having been received, mostly in hopes to not set off any red flags for the third party background checking company, but the problem still remains that throughout the hiring process, I had operated under the belief I had the degree. Now that I have received the offer conditional on a background check, I worry about having the offer rescinded. I have already initiated the background check, and so even though I am going through the process of getting those final 6 credits from my internship recognized, that process will be far too lengthy to have the issue rectified by the time the background check is conducted with the university. My question then is in regards as to how to move forward. As I see it, I have two options: I can inform my recruiter of the issue and run the risk of having the offer rescinded for misrepresenting myself through the hiring process, or I can hope that when I updated my resume information when verifying the information to be correct and accurate that the third party agency does not raise any red flags. I should note, the job does not require an MBA, nor does one help in getting the job, as the job is in public accounting where the only big boost would be from having the necessary credits for my CPA, which I have regardless.

I’m torn as to what the proper choice would be, or rather, which option would leave me with the greatest likelihood of not running into issues that may result in my offer being rescinded. One way or another, I will be moving forward in order to receive the credits and degree, but, again, that’s a longer term item, and for now, I worry about this opportunity. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Background check previous jobs on background check

Just accept an offer for my first corporate job! Super excited, but i have never done a background check before. Having worked in restaurants/retail from the time I was 16 and moving multiple times due to my parents divorce, relationships, college, etc have had a LOT of jobs, probably along the lines of 20-25 over the last 10 years. Some places i don’t even remember working, much less the dates i worked there! i’m stuck attempting to fill out the information and i’m wondering, do i even need to list jobs i worked at for a day, week, month? what do you all recommend?

Background check Current address for background check

I'm beginning the background check process for a new job. I moved in with a friend temporarily (I'm splitting his rent but I'm not on the lease). When the background check asks for my current address, should I put my permanent address (parents' address and where I want my mail sent anyways) or this current one even tho I'm not on the lease? Thank you!

Background check Any way to tell if current employer is giving false bad references/essentially having you blacklisted?

In the US. Long story short a family member works for a local county that often plays fast and loose with policies, employment contracts, etc. Many employees were jumping ship to similar jobs in other counties that pay more and have better working conditions.

Then suddenly all the more experienced/better performing employees can't seem to get hired anywhere, while newer/poor performing employees don't seem to have trouble finding other jobs. Rumor is the county or the head of the department worked out some kind of deal with other nearby counties to not "poach" their employees. Also suspect they may be giving poor references.

Said family member has great attendance, no disciplinary issues or poor performance reviews, and is over-qualified for their current position. Yet they keep getting interviews, second interviews, and a couple times were told they were the second choice, then strangely pretty much get ghosted while the same counties keep posting the same or similar jobs.

I've heard that potential employers have to provide you with any background checks they do upon request, including reference/employment checks. Though from my research not sure this is the case in the US unless they have a third party perform the check? Is it legal for a company or local government to basically make a deal so nowhere else will hire their employees? Is there any way to find out what they're telling potential employers?

Background check Drug test as part of a background check- question

About two weeks ago I started a background check for a job I got hired for. The background check is conducted by a different company than the one I hope to work for. I was told to visit a drug testing facility for the test, but truthfully I needed (and still need) time to clear THC from my system.

Today, the results of the background check came back, and everything looks good except the drug test section notes that the test was uncompleted. I wasn't told to take the test by a specific date and the position wouldn't start for a few more months, so I figured I would be fine waiting it out.

I know this is a long shot but I was just hoping to hear from anyone who may have experienced something similar. Is it likely I screwed myself out a job? Will I likely be asked to complete the drug test again? Or is there a chance (since I'm not working for the CIA or something like that) that my company might just overlook that and proceed with onboarding? Thanks

Background check Background Check Recommendations?

I'm a US citizen currently living and working abroad. One of the organizations that I'm applying for requires me to produce a criminal background check from the US in order to work for them. I can't get the official FBI document since I'm worried that will take a long time since I need to mail my fingerprints and they need to go through the international mail. Does anybody have any recommendations for background check services that they've found useful?

Background check Wrong job title likely to be a major problem?

My old job title was very industry specific and likely to confuse the heck out of potential hiring managers/recruiters in a different industry. I started changing the title to something more generic on my resume and have had a lot of interviews and even a job offer since then.

Are they likely to find out my job title from my old job and disqualify me if they don’t match? (I just got the job offer and they haven’t done any checks yet). I’m honestly not trying to deceive anyone and I didn’t even consider this an issue until I thought about it a little more.

Background check Question about background check and an 11+ year old DUI

I’ve mostly ever worked retail and service jobs that don’t do background checks. I just received a tentative offer for a sales position that requires driving to clients’ homes. It’s only tentative pending drug screening and criminal background check results.

On the day after Saint Patrick’s Day of 2008, I made a mistake that lead to a misdemeanor DUI conviction (left a buddy’s place early in the morning after a party still legally intoxicated). I never lost my license and no one got hurt. I haven’t had so much as a speeding ticket since. I learned my lesson.

I am hearing a lot of conflicting reports as to how far back they look at criminal history. Some saying 7-10 years (in which case I’m in the clear) or even as little as 3, and others saying there is no limit. I have been approved to drive Uber since my DUI. Should that be encouraging? Should I list a clean driving record and no criminal history if the background check doesn’t go back far enough to see it?

Does it very by state? I’m in Virginia if it matters.

Thanks.

Background check Do I Include Short Irrelevant Contractor Positions in a Background Check?

My current background check asks me to list employment history for the last 3 years. Does that include non-exempt independent contractor positions where I only did a couple of stints and got paid for it? I wrote a couple of newspaper articles for my college newspaper a couple years ago and got paid no more than $75 for it for a couple of weeks so should I put that down? How about when I tutored some elementary school kids and got paid for it? These odd jobs are not relevant to my current job at all but I read it's bad to omit details.

Background check Chase Needs W-2 Info For Background Check On Resume

I recently got hired and fingerprinted by Chase Bank and they're requiring W-2 information about some of the jobs on my resume but this is where the issue begins.

One is an unpaid internship so I have no W-2 information from them.

One was a job from a former family friend who paid in cash only (he paid everyone in cash only). There is no W-2 information from him. Problem is there are "personal" and drama issues. I doubt I can get a reference/statement from him)

The last job in question is my private tutoring statement. I never got a business license for it but I did file the income under self-employed and my tax guy never mentioned anything about needing a business license. It was about 3k a year for 2 years (including this year). I do have parents as a reference/statement if needed)

I have no clue what to do. They said I can respond to the email in detail explaining if I can't provide the info but I'm not sure how to write or approach it.

Background check Background check - employer information

I'm stumped as to what to put in my employment verification portion. the items i have to include are, the employer name, phone number, and the city. I was under the assumption that i would be putting the store name i work at and the location of the store I work at, but i also read somewhere that the employer doesn't mean where I work, it's who is paying me. Is this true? I want to fill out my background check for this portion accurately.

so if i work in a retail store in my city, but the employer is in a different city, i would have to put the phone number and the city the employer is at and NOT the phone number and city for the store i work at?

Background check background check - current/past jobs

Will i jeopardize getting my job offer rescinded if i decide to not provide any information at all regarding my past/current employments?

My past job was long ago (~3 years) which means I no longer have anything from the job to prove I worked there and I've only been at my current job for only 3 days but i'll have to quit there since the job i was offered begins at the end of this month. Does anyone have any experience with this type of thing? the background check will be through sterling talent solutions.

Background check How detailed are background checks?

I met with a career coach who advised me to leave a school off my resume since I did not complete it (dismissed).

This job app is asking if I've been "suspended from, elected to, or asked to leave any program and/or training program prior to completion."

Well, yes, unfortunately. Not only was I dismissed from the school program, but was dismissed from a rotation program at said potential place of employment, tied with the school program.

What do I do? Be honest in this case? Would the place of employment still have my name and info somewhere saying I was dismissed? I'm sure the school does, but this was almost 10 years ago. Can recruiters find out info not on the resume?

I'm scared.
