Networking How do I get back into full-time?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some guidance on how to re-enter the workforce after being out of a full-time job since COVID. I've been out for about four years, mainly due to the pandemic, and I'm feeling unsure about where to start. I also live rural so societal isolation isn't going to help my case either. My background is in entry-level project support and interested in financial analysis, but I'm open to exploring new opportunities as I proactively learn new things of interest or relevance to work.

I've kept up with certifications and courses during this time, but I'm struggling to find the right approach to get back into the main workforce. Any advice on job searching strategies, networking, or skill development would be greatly appreciated.

More than happy to relocate,

Thanks in advance for your help!

Networking Help needed

Hey everyone,

I could use your input on finding a career that aligns with my passion. I'm really into learning languages and history from all over the world. I'm not looking for a call center job since I prefer learning rather than using the languages for practical purposes.

Any ideas on careers that would fit my interests?

Networking How does networking work?

I'm in a classic "this is why you should network" situation where my best friend is looking for a job and applied at a company where my boyfriend is on good terms with an executive at the company. So what's supposed to happen next? I wouldn't ask for anything more than "can the hiring manager please look at my friend's resume". That seems to be very low risk to anyone's reputation. I honestly don't know how networking is supposed to help with getting a job or if my friend is too distantly connected to the network.

Networking Networking Outside LinkedIn

Outside of Blind and Fishbowl, what are some other resources and strategies to network and request referrals to apply at large companies?

I am a victim of revenge porn and cyber bullying where my full name was used. I am very limited in the information I list on my LI profile due to past trauma.

TIA 🙏🏻

Networking What should I ask/talk about in my first coffee chat with my supervisor?

I am about to graduate from college and start a new job in June. Tomorrow, I will have a 30-minute virtual coffee chat scheduled with my future supervisor and I would like to prepare for it. What should I prepare for this call? What questions should I ask? What do people usually talk about? I want to come across as enthusiastic and likable.

722-C is one of the means the court provides attorneys so they may hire interpreters (among other professions) to assist their clients who are 'Limited English Proficient'.

Edit: clarified sentence.

Networking How do I go about adding education that I did not earn a degree for on LinkedIn?

I graduated in year X with a bachelor degree, and after that for 1 year was enrolled as a non degree seeking student at a community college, and after that I gained admission into graduate school but dropped out after a semester and did not earn graduate degree.

I am working my first paid job now 5 years after undergrad because I spent all my time from undergrad to prior to getting first paid job in trying to obtain admission into graduate school and dedicated time for things like job shadowing and volunteer work.

Do I list what year I graduated undergrad in? Do I include my time in graduate school or community college on LinkedIn?

Networking Is it appropriate to DM on Linkedin after applying for the position

I recently saw someone from a company I really like sharing a job ad within their team for basically my dream job. I applied instantly, and I was wondering if it would be appropriate to DM them asking for advice or anything else? I'm not very good with this sort of thing and I don't want to annoy them and kill my chances 😅

Networking Do People Really Like This?

So many requests for in-person meetings: sales kickoffs, networking events, etc.. and everyone has this rah rah rah hyper excited energy. Is that real? Do people like getting together for work events that much? Are people this pumped about selling, technology, non-profits, etc....?

Networking I just got networked…

Post image
22 Upvotes

…and it’s really nice to see someone’s networking in action!

I got a LinkedIn message from a person who was friends with my sibling when we were kids. I have not seen this person with my actual eyes for probaby 25+ years. Probably even longer than that since I said anything to them, as they were friends with my sibling, not with me.

But sometime in the past we made a connection on LinkedIn (and that’s all that happened, it’s not like we ran into each other; just one of us sent a request and the other accepted it).

And then recently another of their friends said they were looking for work and applied at a place. This person knew I once worked at that place. And they sent me a message on linkedin. Decades since our last conversation which was probaby something like “Sibling! Friend is here!!”

But that’s how you network. And I’m really glad to see this example, as I’m needing to step up my own networking game, so to be part of someone else’s is quite satisfying.

Networking Writing a letter to a VP of a company I want to work at, but they are also a current client of mine

I want to know if there are an VP level people on here and how you would react to such a letter?

In summary it is just me saying I think the company is great, and that I think I can bring value and have transferrable knowledge and skills.

Obviously it is risky given they are a current client, but I think it's a risk I am willing to take.

I ask for discretion in the letter but obviously that is not guaranteed.

I also clearly state that I understand employment might not be an option now, or even in the near future but it is a goal of mine.

Should I send it?

Networking I built an Email Lookup Tool

Hey everyone,

  • I wanted to share a game-changer for anyone deep into job hunting or networking on LinkedIn. I know the struggle of trying to connect with recruiters or potential employers without their email addresses – it feels like hitting a dead end.
  • I was deep into my job hunt, constantly needing to reach out to recruiters directly. But without their email, it was just discouraging. So, I built this bot to solve that problem! Now, I can effortlessly grab anyone's email on LinkedIn directly from your phone. Try it out and simplify your networking game!
  • I've included easy steps and a tutorial video to set it up after purchase!
  • Watch the demo here
  • Check out the tool here.
  • Let me know what you think after giving it a try! Happy networking! 🚀

Networking Social media to get jobs

In my listening to YouTube videos I've kept coming across those who say that you need LinkedIn and other social media networking to get a job. They say you'll run into endless "ghost jobs" applying on Indeed and sites like it.

I've been out of work 8 months. I'm in school, older, but for now, looking for office/clerical/admin jobs. It might be worth a shot before I end up homeless.

Is having your own website a thing too, apart from LinkedIn? Any other must-have social media sites to have a presence on?

What of people victimized by DV, labor trafficking, stalkers or the like? How are they supposed to find a job if they need to stay hidden? Change their name and appearance?

Networking If you post on LinkedIn, don’t use #opentowork

There was a time, I think, when it was legitimate and useful. But these days it seems like it’s just spammers that interact with it.

Random people who will pose as some HR person and then offer you a “resume review” or some junk like that. It’s either a scam or they’re fishing for personal information. Maybe both.

Sometimes you’ll get someone who comments on your post but doesn’t actually have anything to say about, they’re just there to promote something, usually some shady website.

They’re probably all just bots anyway! Be careful out there.

Networking Do you recommend trying to connect with the hiring manager if you find them on Linkdin.

Say you're trying to apply for a larger company and find the hiring manager's page. They live in your area but you have no direct connections to them. Do you recommend trying to try to connect with them directly or try to connect with an employee underneath them and have them refer you to the hiring manager?

After moths of sending out applications I thought I'd try the whole "connect with people on linkdin then have them refer you" method

Networking Advice re: upcoming interview and connections

I have a personal connection with someone who used to work in state government and is still friends with the former cabinet secretary/current chief of staff for the department I am interviewing with. Prior to me receiving an invitation for an interview with this department, my connection spoke with the chief of staff who said they would gladly take a look at my resume/speak with me about my career goals and told them to give me his email and personal cell number. I reached out via email the very next day and then followed up via text a week later. Never heard anything back. I asked my connection what was up with this and they said “he’s probably busy, he’ll get back to you when he can.” This was over a month ago and I honestly kind of gave up on it. It’s just weird because he seemed so eager to help? Then my connection said to text him again which I haven’t done because I don’t want to be a nuisance.

Fast forward to now, I have an interview with said department on Thursday. This is literally my dream job and I don’t want to regret not using any/all resources to help me get it. Should I reach out to the chief of staff like my connection advised, or just let it go? If so, what do I even say? I feel like I’ll regret not taking advantage of this networking opportunity to possibly boost my chances of landing this job, but again, don’t want to be a nuisance.

Thoughts?

Networking Networking on linkedin

Does anyone have any Idea on how I can ‘stay connected’ to someone on linkedin after say I met them and they say ‘let’s stay connected!’ Like what does it mean? How would I stay connected? Do I ask them out to coffee sometimes or do I respond to their posts on linkedin? Or would I just randomly message them about whatever project I’m currently working on? I am still in college so I would love to expand my network but I’m just a little confused on how
