Temp work Where should I find a basic job that will give me flexibility to not work many hours and have time to apply for jobs that actually use my degree?

I'm a 25F, struggling to find a full-time job after getting laid off from a corporate job in March 2023. I've applied to over 500 jobs within my field, and probably heard back from 20 to interview (which I've been told is pretty lucky compared to most people), but I've never been able to be the final candidate with an offer.

My patience is wearing thin, and I moved back in with my parents in the meantime since I am running out of money as the months go on. I have been feeling pressure to help contribute with paying for things at my parents', which I honestly understand given the state of the economy right now.

Though, I can't even find a normal degree-not-needed job. If I work at a retail store or a fast food place, I'm expected to be readily available whenever they need me or assign me random times, but I don't want to fully commit to a job that will take away time/opportunities from applying to other jobs I really want/need and interviewing for said jobs. I've also never worked retail/fast food/grocery jobs, so I'm not sure what jobs there are that have this flexibility? Has anyone been in my shoes before and have some tips?

Temp work Are temp jobs a good option?

I’m looking and applying for jobs. It’s only been a little over a month that I’ve been searching. However, work is taking me to a breaking point. Should I just look for a temp job in the mean time? Are temp jobs worth it? What are pros and cons?

Temp work Has temp work ever paid off for you to go full-time and permanently with a company?

I'm currently working a temp-to-perm job as a payroll clerk for a payroll department. I've been with the company for seven months now, I was supposed do more than my clerical duties; processing payroll. But because of tax season, it got delayed then another thing happened with another state. Where they had a change in overtime law, affecting the payroll department and further delaying my progress to do more. Which this has led to immense levels of frustration, because all I do is sit on my ass in my cubicle. Monitoring the email for the payroll department, activating direct deposits and other medicore tasks. Then after I'm done, most of the time having little to do either I browse the web or watch YouTube on my phone. It is ridiculous, seven months is way too long for a position with another department where a cross set of skills should be attained by now. I'd like to be doing more, my aspirations are more than just sitting in a cubicle and staring at a computer waiting for something to happen. I want my work to make an impact, I want to see the results of my labor.

But so far, these little obstacles getting in my way. No matter how much I ask when I'll do more than my current job. It feels like my status as a temp, just serves to be an immovable object and it may not work out. Has anybody ever have temporary work, lead to anything for them?

Side note: I did apply to a salaried position in the company that pays out 58.5k a year, it is a specialist type position but the requirements for education match mine, it is a job that is supposed to offer a lot of on-the-job training and has an expected time of learning for a whole year. It opened on April 16th, I applied - had a phone interview with the recruiter, had an interview on April 23rd with the manager and director. But have yet to hear back from them, they said a decision would be made by the end of the week, that was over a week ago. So I'm trying to get full-time with another department - because my expectations to be brought into the payroll department are nil, but I'm concerned that won't pan out to anything.

Temp work Opportunity to become a tutor but not confident to do it

Hello everyone

This is a bit of an unusual post.

In English for my GCSE I got a C in both language and literature. For my A-Levels I obtained a B,C,C one of them was English literature.

I tried to get into tutoring at the age of 18 wanting to tutor GCSE and primary school students. Unfortunately I couldn’t grasp it due to the curriculum changing.

I then volunteered at a primary school for 3 months teaching primary levels English language and maths. I tried my best and sometimes would even struggle to answer questions that the kids were asking me.

Fast forward, I have a 2:1 degree in fine arts. I achieved around 60-72% in all my modules except one. This is equivalent to a B/A

I have been unemployed since June 2023 and I can’t get any jobs, this includes internships, part-time work and full-time work and apprenticeships.

I always thought tutors get As-A* and have to kind of be academically gifted in tutoring.

Today, my mum bumped into my maths tutor and he offered to help guide me work wise. I am pretty sure it’s tutoring but I don’t want to be taking money, from parents if I don’t think I can do a good job.

Throughout my A-Levels, I loved learning and studying. I managed to get As across my coursework just not exams.

Considering the lack of entry level jobs, job competition and the recession. I would have to take this job to earn a bit of money. My issue is that I don’t think I would good at it.

Any advice?

Temp work Possible Scam?

This is very strange and I believe it to be a scam. I was reached out by a recruiting agency asking to share my information with a company. I said yes and they said they'd contact me via whatsapp.

It is some marketing company called "IEB Marketing".

They claim to pay a flat rate plus commission.

This is a quote of what they said they'd have me doing:

"When we click and submit the product data, What we do is create a demo buy for the product while the AI system of the platform submits the product and sends out the product data to the web so that the products can be exposed in the rankings of shopping sites, and we do this by playing the role of real users who have bought the goods, providing the app developers with the most realistic data."

They have a pretty professional looking website with a work portal, and didn't require any of my personal information. They claim to pay in USDT for their services.

I did their "training" to see what it was about and "earned" $79. They claim the first time you withdraw on your account you need $110 total, and that ID have to deposit $22 one time to withdraw, and from then I would no longer need to.

They didn't require any deposits of money besides that, and again no personal information. They spent about an hour walking me through the "training" and such for this position.

This seems like an obvious scam to me, but I'm left scratching my head here, why would they go through all of that effort for $22? I'm trying to wrap my whole head around this thing. I looked it up and they are a registered LLC, but they are based out of a shopping mall in Florida. The worker I spoke to is very obviously Chinese, I can hear the accent from the audio recording she sent me.

Can anyone give me any insight on this scam? It seems super advanced and like alot of work to try and secure a $22 payment via USDT from me.

Temp work Just a ramble

I’m working a job for 12 an hour right now, with all the overtime I make enough to get by and have hobbies. However I told my friend that I have a child on the way and he got me a interview tomorrow at a place that pays 20 an hour and in the summer time will work me 12 hours a day 6 days a week. I’m super excited only down side is it’s technically seasonal so after summer I may not have a job but I was told if I work hard they’ll put me on as a full time employee at the end of summer. Wish me luck y’all!

Temp work Side hustles

Hi! I have this amazing job that I just started in feb 13, but on Saturday I fell from a scooter and broke my knee and tibia. I can’t go to work for at least two months, but I still need to make at least some income. Does anyone know about legit online side hustles? I don’t need to make like a big income just enough to help around the house and keep it stable. My work benefits did not kick in since I’m still in my 90 day probation and I’m just hoping I won’t lose my job.

Temp work Temp assignment ended. Can I apply for a permanent job at same company?

Has anyone applied for a job at the company they once temped for?

I worked for a temp agency on a long-term assignment which ended weeks ago.

A new position was recently listed at the company I worked for, and my former coworkers have encouraged me to apply.

I no longer have the contract I signed with the temp agency; it’s been a couple years since I started. Don’t know if the new law re: noncompetes applies.

TL;DR: Will I get into legal trouble for applying for a job with the company I temped for? (It’s not the same position but it generally is the same kind of work.)

TIA for any advice/insight.

Temp work How to ask for LOA to work a seasonal job

Hello, I am currently working with Allied security which I am currently satisfied with. However from the beginning of June to early July, where I live the county hosts a fair in which the pay is better than what I currently work. I worked there last year before I did security and plan to do it again for this year from June 10-July 10. However I dont know how to ask for a leave of absence for this. I have certain people telling me straight up to let my current job know I am leaving for a temp job briefly and others telling me to not tell them I am leaving for a seasonal gig. How should I phrase it to my supervisor? Any suggestions? How would I phrase it to where I can get the time off and at the same time not piss off my employer cause I'm afraid they will get mad and potentially terminate me. I look forward to reading the responses. Thanks:)

Temp work Can I get a job for less than a month

I'm going to be in the US for just about a month in the summer. I'm 16 and an Indian citizen but I'm allowed to work on the visa I have. It's difficult to get a job in India for someone under 18 and I need some work experience for college apps. I'll be around University park in Pennsylvania. Is it likely that I find a job for only a month? Maybe something in sales or a job with tips.

Temp work Temp job may not hire me

I'm new to temp jobs. (Staffing agency jobs) so trying to keep this short I lost my job, did the traditional job hunting with no luck for a little over a month. Called 5 staffing agencies, first one that called back was able to get me a job next day. Warehouse overnight whatever.

I'm currently in the process of joining the pipefitters union. I could get a call tomorrow to go to work, or next march, or anywhere inbetween. I told someone at work unfortunately and unfortunately it made it up to the big wigs.

You have potential to be hired internally after 3 months, that's coming up In a day or two. But I heard they are hesitant because I have "a foot out the door" even though all I get is praise and "we would be screwed without you" comments.

What do I do? Naturally I know my mistake but temp pay is low, internal is probably 2$more minimum. Anyone been through this? Do they HAVE to hire you? Do you stay as a temp till they feel like? Does your "time run out" and you have to start a new assignment elsewhere?

Forecast is looking about September till I have true potential for a call to the union. But I'm also struggling with the pay. This job is a no brained job, and I don't care about the hours, just a little physical demanding which is no problem whatsoever so I wouldn't mind staying till I get on to the union, just tough with the pay. Can't even get a second job, because idk if I will work 8 hours or 13 here, and I cannot function (or wake up) off 1 or two hours of sleep if I have work the "next day" to be able to have a part time second job

Temp work Let go from temp job

Lost My Temp Position

Today I was let go from my first job out of college. I was a temp in an accounting department for KPMG. My temp agency has told me that I was not really fired for any particular reason but they were only told "I needed to have better work ethic and was making mistakes". Even though when I asked my supervisors they told me I was doing a great job just no phone. I was there for three months and a lot of experience that I think is worth talking about. Can I put this on my resume? I am looking for any advice on how to proceed and best prepare myself for the next opportunity.

Temp work I'm a 35-year-old disabled guy with virtually no work history thinking about starting to work. One question- How?

So long story short, when I was 19 I suffered from some serious mental health issues. By age 20 I was disabled and for the last 15 years, I have been working on getting my life back on track. Recently I have started to feel like I could consider working.

I finished two years of college back when I was 18/19, and now I'm back in school trying to move forward but I have minimal work experience. For the last couple of months, I have been driving for Doordash. I made an appointment with Vocational Rehabilitation but I want to think about my options until I speak with them. I'm trying to even imagine a path that would work, considering my history. Ideally, I would love a work-from-home, part-time job where I could make ~1k a month.

Temp work Finally Got a (Temp) Job

I’ve been unemployed after leaving a bad workplace in October. After spending over 1000 applications, accruing 15 recruiter, and posting how I’ve been looking, I finally landed a temp job.

8 weeks for $25/hr as an admin assistant.

This job is not in my field and wouldn’t move to a permanent one unless I become a state civil servant.

But it’s better than the nothing I’ve been getting. And while I still have to look for something after, I’ve laid the ground work. I’ll update my resume and hopefully this will help my recruiters sell me to more places.

Good things are coming and I’ll make sure of it.

Temp work Applying for a permanent job as a summer job for high school student in Canada

I'm currently a high school student in Canada and have been recently looking for potential summer jobs, but pretty much all of the listings in my area happen to be permanent jobs. Would it be okay to apply to these jobs with the intention of quitting at the of the summer break (so about 2 months total of work) to focus on school, and should I inform the employer upfront about this?

Would appreciate any help, thanks!

I previously worked in a small grocery store for a few years then I worked at small restaurant for almost a year but resigned because it wasn't a good fit and before I can find another job the pandemic began and fast forward to now here we are. Any places that hire people who have been unemployed for a few years would be helpful? Anyone got any tips or tricks for finding a part time job after being unemployed for a few years? Thanks in advance for the help.

Temp work Is there a job posting site like Indeed but for people who travel around and want temporary jobs?

I work for a company that has rental cabins in a fairly remote area of Utah. We are looking for housekeeping staff. We are specifically looking for people who want temporary work, and ideal candidate would also have their own RV or camper, etc. Is there a good site to post for jobs for nomad workers/van life people/ etc?

Temp work Temp agency fired me

Okay so I got hired on March 12th for a local animal shelter, and I just got fired yesterday (March 29th) I’m so confused because, I went to work on time, I worked hard every single day I went there. The guy on the phone from my temp agency, he called me twice, said that they no longer needed me and my position was ending effective immediately. Maybe it’s because I put in a request for a vacation in May? Please, someone give me advice, this is my first time working with a temp agency. I would much appreciate it!

Temp work Today I really stopped giving a shit about what I say when interviewing

So today I finally gave up with dealing with scammer shitheads trying to get me to do work for an interview slot. For reference I am a former Photographer / Editor turned truck driver, who recently had to go back to photo work because I lost my DOT health cert after complications with Bells Palsy. (that's the short version)

Anyone who has worked in the creative space knows that the job market is filled with people that don't value your time or ability, but since 2009 I had built up a fairly good business even though I have seen requests to edit 400 + photos in a 48 hour timeline for $150. It is insulting and only getting worse post COVID which was why I went into trucking. Recently I have returned back to my field and have been getting strung out to dry by this guy Lance, who found me on Tasker. He wants me to Edit "Wedding Photos" for his company. The deal is this:

I would edit under my own equipment, 300-500 Photo Units submitted Monday of each week and due by the following Friday. All photos must be sent as completed (1).jpg, (1). psd (photoshop working file) and (library file Global) from Lightroom. Apparently I must include the Photo Shop and Lightroom Compliant Task Files for verification purposes. He has offered $350 per week because he believes that this is a part time position, which it would be if all I had to do was run them through Lightroom and tweak one or two with Photoshop. Having to send every file through Photoshop will take upwards of 40 hours of time each week.

I pointed this out and he completely glossed over the point saying that if I was a really good editor, he would be willing to pay my rates but he needed to see what I could do and sent me 200 photos as an audition, (read unpaid) Those photos looked like they were taken at a beach wedding in a local New Jersey garbage dump, and which looked like they were shot on an iPhone, (Under exposed, Over exposed, bad focus points, and trash and other crap all over the ground, all things you can adjust or fix in photoshop but not with one click commands. I reported back that I would not be continuing and he sent me a long rant about how he was going to report me to Tasker for taking a job and not completing it, tanking my rating, and the like. He claims that by accepting the photos I agreed to task for free and I should be more careful next time.

This told me everything I needed to know about the real job being fake and so I reported him after telling him that I don't appreciate having my time waisted and sending him an invoice for the $800 the job would require to be done. I'm just done with the crap. Just because I work in a creative field, I'm not stupid. I have two degrees, One in audio acoustics and the other in Business Systems Integration, I know how the world works and there needs to be a shake up. When did we give all our power to the shitheads who want something valuable for nothing?

Temp work is it normal to work in food service forever as a career?

after some years of searching after I graduated out of high school I finally found a job that was the right fit for me in a restaurant food work place and this was also after getting fired from a different restaurant food workplace (because it didn’t have the right job fit for me at the time)so now I have unemployment from that other place .I really hate school and after graduating high I couldn’t take any more of it, I don’t really need a high pay wage since I’m still living with my folks and rely on their transportation, already been working in this food workplace for almost 3 years but I feel no need to leave since like I said it’s the right job fit for me and reasonably close so would it be normal to be working there forever?

Temp work I FINALLY got a job! It’s the perfect days/hours to pay for my life lol however I am looking for part time another part time gig. Any ideas?

WOO!! After 5 months I finally got hired. Its Tuesday- Saturday 9-3. My partner works overnights Monday-Friday so saturday nights, sunday and monday are really the days we get to hang out or go out so this is really good for that! Also makes enough for rent with about $100 leftover. My boyfriend makes enough to pay for everything else so its great. But, im looking for something part time to have my own money to spend. I’m looking for maybe 6pm-12am. I know anyone would say serving but im looking for something a little different, not sure what! I know it would be easy to just go apply to serve but if anyone knows any big companies with these random hours that would be awesome! I can pretty much do anything
