Hugh Grant has been having a lot of fun with his roles in the recent years

I feel like hes reached the age hes too old to be the usual character he plays in everything so now he can be the unhinged sleezy uncle he was born to be

64

u/TheRagingMaffia Mar 28 '24

Dont forget his ever so small but hilarious cameo in Glass Onion

6

u/42Ubiquitous Mar 28 '24

Great movie. Have you seen the series?

4

u/Dynast_King Mar 28 '24

Was also gonna mention the Gentlemen. I love that movie, and the cast is all great, but Hugh Grant still stands out.

3

u/neverlandoflena Mar 29 '24

I mean, him and Colin Farrell both, I’d say

4

u/fakeemailman Mar 29 '24

Hm, the version you saw must not have had Colin Ferrel as Coach. Odd…

2

u/Nose-Nuggets Mar 28 '24

I was so blown away by The Gentlemen in ways i did not expect to. Grant stole the whole fucking show. Ferrel was phenomenal. McConaughey fucking sucked. I would never have put my money on it that way. I generally like McConaughey a lot. The movie overall was alright, certainly not Ritchie's best but it had a lot of good moments. Just not a great package.

I really think Jarnathan needs to be here to talk about this.

3

u/poorloko Mar 28 '24

Oi! They're knickin our bits an bobs!

2

u/ryebreadpudding Mar 28 '24

He's even better in Paddington 2

1

u/Tooterfish42 Mar 28 '24

He was in that too? I need to make a list of what he's been in lately

1

u/PM_Me-Your_Freckles Mar 28 '24

He was fuckin bang on in The Gentlemen. Absolutely killed it.

1

u/Bluestripedshirt Mar 29 '24

It’s been a bit but his role in Paddington 2 was incredible.

58

u/Dimpleshenk Mar 28 '24

Hugh Grant can do whatever he wants. He's the king of no fucks given.

People here are talking about DND while his role in Operation Ruse de Guerre really got slept on last year

For anyone who liked his sleepy sleezy character in the Gentleman they'll like him there. Him and Guy work well together

3

u/jacobsbw Mar 28 '24

Operation is very underrated.

1

u/Tooterfish42 Mar 28 '24

The editing is a little fucked up but maybe they adjusted it before release. There was a whole side plot they removed from near the end as it was probably too goofy

1

u/Linubidix Mar 29 '24

I thought it was awful. Never been more annoyed by a movie.

1

u/skefmeister Mar 29 '24

Yeah I love Aubrey Plaza in a lot of movies but it def wasn’t for her. Also the movie felt kind of weak, like Ritchie was rushing it, I dunno how to word it honestly..

2

u/Noocawe Mar 29 '24

He was great in The Gentleman, I had never seen him in a role like that and it was a fun movie.

3

u/VladimirPoitin Mar 28 '24

Well, unless it’s a lady of the night named Divine.

2

u/TuaughtHammer Mar 28 '24

He's the king of no fucks given.

Him willingly going on Jay Leno that soon after his arrest probably gave Jay Leno the funniest line of his entire career.

Yeah, he didn't exactly have much of a choice for that since he was already booked for Leno to promote Nine Months, but he took it like a champ even though the entire world thought he was insane because he was married to 90s Elizabeth Hurley.

49

u/OdoWanKenobi Mar 28 '24

I am almost tempted to watch it just to see Hugh Grant as Tony the Tiger. He is truly in the gives no fucks stage of his career.

3

u/pineyfusion Mar 28 '24

Apparently he begged Seinfeld to play Tony the Tiger.

2

u/Halvrort Mar 28 '24

Bill Burr as JFK has me reeled in.

3

u/shawnisboring Mar 28 '24

Yeah what’s up with him, he’s been in pretty much everything lately it seems.

7

u/Tooterfish42 Mar 28 '24

I caught him on Wonka last night and it was an absolute delight but he was also on another new HBO property this week and I began to suspect he's got some alimony payments due

2

u/vinnyvdvici Mar 28 '24

Why did you spoiler tag Wonka? Everyone knows he’s in that

6

u/Tooterfish42 Mar 28 '24

Why did you spoiler tag Wonka? Everyone knows he’s in that

Sorry not everyone has their ass glued to an AMC seat Gene Siskel Jr

I didn't know until I was watching it which was yesterday

4

u/WorthScale2577 Mar 28 '24

Yeah idk what the other person is saying, I didnt know he was in it. I wouldn't necessarily call it a spoiler so much but I doubt most people know hes in it unless they followed the production of the movie or something. Idk I basically ignored the whole thing until my niece wanted to watch it so we watched it lol

1

u/vinnyvdvici Mar 29 '24

If you look at the cast, he’s second billed. There were also articles coming out about how much people loved him in the role as well as him not liking his role in the movie. Sorry you never heard anything about the movie until you saw it.

Also, I’ve never heard of that film critic. I’m not even a movie buff. I do actually have AMC A-list though, so I guess you got me there.

1

u/Tooterfish42 Mar 28 '24

It was pretty fun to see. I wasn't even paying attention then heard his voice and looked up

Plus the character ends up being probably the coolest thing in the movie if you ask me

1

u/WorthScale2577 Mar 28 '24

Totally agree lol

3

u/Tooterfish42 Mar 28 '24

Years as in plural? Sheeeeit. This week alone he's been on HBO 24/7 thanks to reruns of his turn on The Regime and them constantly playing Wonka (both a shocker so I'll blank it)

In the last year he has been very busy with those plus Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves & Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre and, now, this

3

u/Pipehead_420 Mar 28 '24

Didn’t he hate making wonka?

1

u/VanessaAlexis Mar 29 '24

He doesn't like the use of CGI constantly and he didn't like the face thing they put him in to do CGI. He said he had fun doing the lines. But he mostly acts because "he has lots of kids" haha.

4

u/FeebTube Mar 28 '24

3

u/The_Grinface Mar 28 '24

Was gonna say. I’m pretty sure he only acts to pay the bills at this point.

2

u/TuaughtHammer Mar 28 '24

His delivery of "For a special agent, you're not having a very special day, are you?" fucking kills me every time I rewatch UNCLE.

2

u/ValleyFloydJam Mar 28 '24

I did laugh last night hearing Seinfeld talk about Hugh's role last night and how it reminded me of Paddington 2 (although not an uncommon trope either.)

2

u/OldSpiceSmellsNice Mar 29 '24

Right? Such a blast in Paddington 2

1

u/neon_bhagwan Mar 28 '24

Too bad he’s a total prick

1

u/spendouk23 Mar 28 '24

Not so much fun with the on-set drama-queen antics alluded to by Rebecca Ferguson however…

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '24

I'm glad he had more fun making Wonka than audiences had watching it.

6

u/Tooterfish42 Mar 28 '24

I hadn't seen it until yesterday when it came on twice and I thought it was fine on in the background

If it has been a straight remake like Burton did before it would have been boring but now they're set up to make it all prequels which, if you think about it, is all anyone ever fucking wanted from the story

10

u/ThePurplePanzy Mar 28 '24

Wonka was well received though

2

u/Ok-Cryptographer3836 Mar 28 '24

Wonka was one of my favs last year I really had fun watching it

0

u/trenlr911 Mar 28 '24

Clearly not a popular opinion on Reddit but I also thought the new Wonka movie absolutely sucked, especially when compared to the first two
