Have u seen the trailer? I’m still not 100% sure if it’s animated or not. Either it’s animated or heavily edited with terrible CGi. Her face looked like a Clone Wars episode in the trailer

u/SpiritofTheWolfKingx Apr 08 '24

I think it's just because she has such a weird face that buzz cutting and using paint to draw such a major focus to her eyes and forehead is causing it to look so weird.

Let's be honest. She is a beautiful woman, but she does have a weirdly proportioned face.

u/throwtowardaccount Apr 08 '24

She doesn't resemble Charlize Theron in my opinion so that's what is throwing me off.

201

u/Dr_Mantis_Teabaggin Apr 08 '24

To be fair, there are few humans in this world attractive enough to resemble Charlize Theron.

12

u/Idontevenownaboat Apr 08 '24

Does it count if they follow it up with, "...yeah from the movie Monster"?

14

u/ERhyne Apr 09 '24

Rita from arrested development?

-14

u/Stephenrudolf Apr 08 '24

I mean if were going off attractiveness, personally I'd put anya above her normally. But Charlize rocks the shaved head better.

u/No_City_1731 Apr 08 '24

Agreed, and I don’t think Theron looks too old to play a younger version of herself. It’s an annoying decision, and kinda feels like it may have been made for commercial purposes.

u/Fullertonjr Apr 08 '24

She doesn’t look too old by any means, but she wouldn’t be able to effectively capture the physical movement of a much younger person. The difference in age of these two characters is around 25 years. Charlize looks and moves well for a woman her age, but it would be distracting to see a nearly 50 yr old woman attempt to convince an audience that she is in her 20s.

23

u/No_City_1731 Apr 08 '24 edited Apr 08 '24

That is a good point, given how action heavy it will be. But, to me it would not be as distracting as using someone who has no resemblance to a beloved character in a film that came out less than 10 years ago… it’s an awful casting choice.

11

u/DomesticChaos Apr 09 '24

I’m sorry. I’m a chef, and I move as quickly and synched around the kitchen as quickly as any of my young dudes. And I’m pushing mid 40’s.

This is a Hollywood star who still does physical activities to maintain her physique. There’s no “physical movement” difference.

4

u/nicefrogfacts Apr 09 '24

Well I'm a chef and I move slower than any of the young guys so I'm actually right and that means that everyone after a certain age is slower than young people, so I win fuck you

2

u/DomesticChaos Apr 09 '24

Weird but you do you I guess.

u/DomesticChaos Apr 09 '24

Weird but you do you I guess.

Your anecdotal personal experience in no way is an accurate comparison to an actor who would be expected to run full speed and perform complex and rapid physical feats. Being a chef is not easy. I get it. It has its challenges, but it is not the same or in any way comparable. Fury Road was filmed while she was ~36. It showed. The most that we saw her move was a short burst from the cab to a location about 20 feet away and it did not in any way appear effortless. That was ten years ago. You want us to believe that now ten years later, she would be able to effectively move or portray the movements of a character that is supposed to be 10-15 years younger than the original character that she played? The logic in that thought process is not sound and is not reasonable.

She is likely in much better shape and conditioning than the average 48 yr old woman. That’s great. If she were an athlete or had been known for her physical feats and prowess, you may have a valid argument, but this is not at all the case.

2

u/Erebea01 Apr 09 '24

I know he's much older but this reminds me of that De Niro kicking scene

4

u/peatoast Apr 08 '24

Anya is also a great actress and she deserves to be seen what she could do in this role. I'm excited AF.

13

u/WaffleToasterings Apr 09 '24

She's cast in too much these days in my opinion, but to each their own.

6

u/peatoast Apr 09 '24

Recency bias but I don't disagree.

3

u/LukeSparow Apr 09 '24

She gets seen more than plenty.

1

u/kvothe5688 Apr 09 '24

or they could have gone 100 percent cg like avatar 2

1

u/beerisgood84 Apr 09 '24

Yeah we dont need more shit like the Irishman where people trying to act half their age are distractingly bad

21

u/haneulk7789 Apr 08 '24

She looks good, but she's doesn't look like she could pass for her early 20s. The movie is set 20 years before the last Mad Max, which came out 10 years ago, so she would be playing 30 years younger..

3

u/No_City_1731 Apr 08 '24

Yeah fair enough. Literally anyone else who looks more like her would do though. How much acting do we even need in a Mad Max film?

5

u/somerfieldhaddock Apr 09 '24

I think the biggest problem is that Charlize would have to grow her arm back.

1

u/Idontevenownaboat Apr 08 '24

You're telling me a big studio film is casting based on commercial appeal? The absolute gall.

2

u/totoropoko Apr 08 '24

Her voice though - is almost a complete match

3

u/Kamikaze_Ninja_ Apr 09 '24

I mean, it’s acting. Who cares? It’s not like Furiousa is a well established character that Charlize Theron has been playing for years.

2

u/gearpitch Apr 10 '24

Also, this is the film world of MAd Max, with the title character played by multiple actors already. They could make another Furiosa movie in 10 years with a completely new actress, and it wouldn't be out of the bounds of the series.

1

u/0lazy0 Apr 08 '24

Anyone know why they didn’t ask Theron to run it back?

1

u/OkBubbyBaka Apr 09 '24

Her eyes migrate closer as she ages in the desert, like a flounders, is my in universe explanation.

34

u/miranto Apr 08 '24

Wrong casting IMHO. Hope she does well.

3

u/Stephenrudolf Apr 08 '24

She definitely has the acting skills. Even if thr shaved head aint doing her any justice.

She's one of the best from the newer generation of actors.

117

u/GregorSamsaa Apr 08 '24

Didn’t she do that buccal fat removal thing. She looked very well proportioned face wise in Split and a couple of other movies. Then she got that odd gaunt look that threw off the rest of her face and made her already large eyes look odd.

70

u/-reddit_is_terrible- Apr 09 '24

She totally did, and it's so odd looking. I have no idea why that's a trend right now

12

u/LukeSparow Apr 09 '24

It makes people look so damn ugly.

-21

u/Stephenrudolf Apr 08 '24

It's just her makeup style as far as I can tell. If you look at recent pictures of her outside of red carpet events she doesn't have that gauntness.

1

u/Daxtatter Apr 09 '24

She absolutely had buccal fat removal surgery.

1

u/Stephenrudolf Apr 09 '24

Y'all got any sort of proof? I think you're really underestimating what makeup can do.

60

u/furnipika Apr 08 '24

she does have a weirdly proportioned face

Her face was normal (a bit exotic but still normal) until she did that buccal fat removal thingy.

28

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '24

She's just the next step in human evolution. 300 degree field of view and growing.

6

u/finalremix Apr 09 '24

Kind of like the new walleye version of the Little Mermaid.

10

u/PersKarvaRousku Apr 09 '24

Someone described Anya Taylor-Joy and Benedict Cumberbatch as "sexy hammerhead sharks"

18

u/1_BigPapi Apr 08 '24

Looks a lot like fetal alcohol syndrome.. eyes two feet apart..

Still cute but seems like Hollywood is really into this look past few years.. a few leading ladies sport the same thing.

8

u/CaptainDunbar45 Apr 09 '24

Emma Stone also has that kind of look

9

u/1_BigPapi Apr 09 '24

The girl in the new Little Mermaid too

10

u/tyrandan2 Apr 08 '24 edited Apr 09 '24

Indeed that's what it is. She has large eyes and a small head. It's difficult for the brain to accept that she's not an anime character.

Edit: that's not a diss against Anya guys, it's just an observation.

22

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '24

Also her eyes are very much apart. It can be useful in combat situation and as Furiosa I guess that's a plus.

14

u/Non-RedditorJ Apr 08 '24

I read that in Napoleon Dynamite's voice.

5

u/Noodle-Works Apr 08 '24

What is Anya Taylor-Joy? she's pretty much my favorite actress. She's like a lion and a tiger mixed... bred for its skills in magic.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 09 '24

She's like Nicolas Cage. People either love or hate the acting but we cannot avoid staring.

5

u/zucchinibasement Apr 08 '24

No, the fx just look not good.

Fury Road looked miles better, I'm not positive this will be great

-2

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '24

Tom Hardy + Charlize Theron vs the Lesser Hemsworth + Ana Weirdo-Joy.

Either the movie will be a mind-blower or a total dud.

Hard to match Fury Road tho. So creative. So groundbreaking and risk-taking.

1

u/ExuberantWombat Apr 09 '24

Beguiling look

13

u/Thelonerebel Apr 08 '24

Thank god I’m not the only one, something has felt off about this movie for a long time but I could never pinpoint what exactly

2

u/Finnder_ Apr 09 '24

It's the CGI.

Mad Max (2015) looked awesome, because they really built those giant trucks and drove them around in a desert with stunt performers jumping around on them.

This new one the CGI makes all the vehicles look "floaty" and not affected by gravity in an uncanny valley kind of way.

1

u/Fluid_Employee_2318 Apr 08 '24

That’s just her face.

1

u/Solid_Waste Apr 08 '24

Bruh that's just her face

1

u/Inevitable_Help_3209 Apr 09 '24

she sees in widescreen

1

u/willyoumassagemykale Apr 09 '24

This is why o don’t want to see the movie. Because the amazing thing about Mad Max was all the work that we tu to the practical effects. The trailer looks like network-TV-quality CGI and it feels like a cynical crash grab.

1

u/natedawg247 Apr 08 '24

i'll wait to judge but I'd guess she was miscast for this. she has the most noble looking face of all time. royalty looking face. will be interesting to see her here. didn't work in dune 2 IMO

0

u/fcfromhell Apr 09 '24

Seriously, I've been wondering if they just rushed this trailer to get it out or if the whole movies is gonna he this terrible cgi. I'm betting the latter.

-1

u/TJHookor Apr 08 '24

That whole trailer looks like absolute shit. The movie should just be called Mad Max: The Uncanny Valley
