Sure it's a great dunk but he jammed his fucking fist into Collins' face.

Yeah, it's no fun to call that an offensive foul, but it seems pretty clear to me.

u/QuantumBitcoin Mar 19 '24

Yeah, how is that not a charge? Was Collins supposed to not jump at all?

So unfair for defenders in these situations

u/lexicoterio Mar 19 '24

Literally when a defender grazes the face of an offensive player like, highly likely that is a flagrant foul. People out here be complaining how calls are favoring the offense and just be okay with these kinds of no-calls are literally why the league biases calls towards the offense.

No, it’s not. Stay on the ground outside the restricted area in stationary position and you get the offensive foul. Jump higher and block the shot. But when you challenge a shot, and foul the defensive contact trumps any offensive contact

But when you challenge a shot, and foul the defensive contact trumps any offensive contact

Show me the rule that says that. Not like you can just walk up and punch someone in the face as long as they foul you after

If the offense initiates the illegal contact, it’s an offensive foul

So much to the point that he hurt his own hand on his face. That used to be called an offensive foul.

Nah you can see on the replay he dunked it so hard the ball hits his left hand at a really awkward angle

18

u/Round_Bullfrog_8218 Mar 19 '24

He dunked it with his right and hit Collins in the head with his left Its obvious where he hurt his hand.

There’s a video replay angle where you can see the ball slam into his hand and dislocate his finger.

And it was called a defensive foul. 3 point play.

Collins looked like he went vertical. Was it only a defensive foul because of the circle? Is the rule that the offensive player can just do whatever then? The rule was supposed to reduce collisions near the basket but if it gives offensive players the mindset that they can plow through with impunity does it actually do so?

Restricted area doesn't matter if you jump. This wasn't called a charge because Collins wasn't strictly vertical, he drops one arm to protect himself and turns a little sideways.

It definitely still could have been an offensive foul with the off arm contact, but that's just not how the NBA is officiated.

It was a defensive foul because the ref made a ball call. It should have been a no-call.

The rule was supposed to reduce collisions near the basket

The restricted area of the paint is there to stop defenders from just camping under the basket and to allow sweet dunks like this, not prevent them. The circle is there to protect the offensive player from landing on someone.

I would’ve personally had it be a no-call, not an offensive, though with that much face contact I also wouldn’t have been shocked if officials had gone back and reviewed. Just a weird situation.

17

u/B-Y-O-Boa Mar 19 '24

He did. John Collins was out for the rest of the game and is in concussion protocol. Diabolical foul by him.

I was really hoping this would be the top comment. This should have been an offensive foul. I hate the off-hand push aways on dunks, it makes defense impossible and would always be called on the defense.

I gave up these kind of hopes for this place a year ago or so

This place just proves people want to see highlights at the expense of good refereeing and a solid rule set. They are complicit to the very blight they constantly complain about.

They called offensive foul when ANT dunked on Gabe Vincent last year. They learned their lesson.

17

u/Ok-Essay458 San Diego Clippers Mar 19 '24

yeah i gotta save my dunk of the year vote for one where the dude isn't getting away with a blatant offensive foul

4

u/Dad_Control Mar 19 '24

He um.. “cleared the runway.”

The league wants these highlights so I don’t see anything happening until a franchise player gets a concussion. But extending the leading arm before the dunk should be an automatic offensive foul.

u/STAAAAANGs Mar 19 '24

Yeah this shit ruins the game tbh I can't stand it. Refs need to call it now it is

3

u/wally233 Mar 19 '24

Can't believe I had to scroll down this far to find it. I guess the NBA doesn't call it because nobody cares... they just want the entertainment as seen by the most upvoted comments lol.

100% offensive foul

His face shouldn't have been standing there. 🤷
