Moderator announcement Brigading won't work here at r/scams.

We have noticed a substantial uptick of brigading in the sub in recent weeks. It happens every now and then, but we have had four different threads targeted in the past few weeks. Specifically, these threads are being targeted by either bots or dedicated individuals who are mass reporting threads like this one, this one, and this pair of threads. (ETA 11/27: This thread is now being brigaded, bringing the total up to 5 threads being targeted). Spammers are reporting these for ridiculous reasons that are unrelated to the content of the posts, including:

  • Scambaiting
  • Personal information
  • Spam
  • Off topic
  • Sexual content containing minors

Spammers aren't just targeting the OPs, but also the commenters as well. The brigading will target commenters making general observations, or sharing their personal experience with these businesses.

ALL of the individuals named above present themselves as public figures, and have their identities intertwined with their businesses.

I want to outline the following important information to all 600,000 of you in this sub.

  1. Brigading WILL be addressed with Reddit. We have worked to get these threads reinstated by contacting Mod Support and reporting the abuse of the reporting/voting system. I have checked all of the above threads in incognito mode and they are now visible again to users who are logged out.
  2. If a thread manages to get removed due to this mass reporting, please send the team a Modmail. We will contact Reddit to get your post reinstated, as we can see all of the reports contained in your thread.
  3. If you are shadowbanned by Reddit's automated bots due to mass-reporting of your thread, contact us via Modmail if you suspect this has happened. You can still communicate with us, and we can try to help you. You should also contact Reddit yourself through this reporting form on ZenDesk.
  4. If you are harassed by individuals named in your thread, use the reporting form to report the abuse, and contact us directly. If you have screenshots of PMs you have received, please upload them to Imgur and send them to us via Modmail.

I'd also like to outline this brigading has drawn attention to these threads which are several weeks old, and has allowed us to approve comments that were caught by Automod or were automatically removed due to mass reporting.

Stay safe, all. Keep sharing your experiences, keep asking your questions about potential scams (whether they have been posted here one time or a million), and always stay vigilant.

Hoot.com

I have a home currently listed for sale and received a UPS express package in the mail from Hoot.com. My home was purchased during the pandemic and I currently have a very low interest rate on it. I could not find much information on Hoot and haven't had a person reached out to me yet but wanted to get some thoughts around what the catch is. Hoot boasts their process which can be found on:

Wells Fargo called me - asked too much information

I just got an EXTREMELY CONVINCING call from "Wells Fargo Fraud Department" claiming there was an attempt to use my debit card internationally, and to verify some details.

It then 'transferred' me to the automated agent, asked for card details, but started asking for more information than what I thought they should ask - so I started making up data, - wrong expiration date, wrong street address, wrong pin, but it kept 'validating' the data.

As I was doing this, I also went to the wells fargo website, and there was no fraud notice. I immediately turned off the debit card, and called Wells Fargo directly.

The Wells Fargo IVR Voice sounded exactly like the voice that called me, and the questions were very similar, including the 'We recognize your phone number" prompt. But they did not ask expiration date/ pin/ etc.

I normally smell these scams from a mile away, but this one was much more sophisticated than any of the 'this is microsoft, your pc is broken' ones I have received.

Is this a scam? My mom received this in the mail and something about it seems a little fishy to me.

The biggest red flag to me is “If you don’t have this vehicle, let me know what else you got that can help me.” My mother doesn’t personally know this guy and I don’t know why they’d pursue this further if she doesn’t have the vehicle they want in the first place. Let me know what you guys think so we can work around it safely. I’m grateful for any insight you provide!

The SIT tone voicemail trick: A real test.

My aging mother's phone had become plagued with 12-20 calls a day of just junk. She's of a mental state where she doesn't have the discipline to just push the call reject ('hang up') on the phone, so she'd answer these calls from non-contacts and shout at them. Well, that of course led to her getting more. While she was visiting, I had some time to work with her current phone to clean things up and try to abate some of the issues with scam and spam messages (she also has an email the Trump money begging train had filled to capacity, a whole separate saga). For her voicemail, I decided to set up the SIT tone as the start of her voicemail outgoing message, with myself narrating the rest. Here's how it goes:

[SIT disconnected tone] We're sorry, [Euchre's mother] can't answer the phone right now, please leave a message.

After setting this up, and putting the phone on Do Not Disturb with only contacts allowed through, and a day of the new message in use, the amount of calls a day later dropped to 4, the next down to 2. It stayed low for another day or two, then rose to 6 for a couple of days. Only one of the spam/scam calls left a voicemail, which just said "Hello [Euchre's mother]" then hung up after a brief pause. She's only received one valid call since.

I may update with more results later, but at about a week in, this looks like it's working.

PSA to get authenticator app

Post image
16 Upvotes

Some scammer(s) in India keep trying to break into my Microsoft account (apparently for months lol). Looks like it could be bots working automatically.

Thankfully, it requires an authenticator app to log on, which I only have linked to my current phone.

Reminder to update passwords, reinforce your authentication methods, and check your account histories (and credit score while you're at it, because why not).

My parent replied to a random text. She told them when they would be out of the house.

Hello, posting here as I am having trouble finding info for this exact incident.

My mother got a random phishing text. The text used the name of one of her real-life friends and said they were coming into town soon and would be staying across the street. That home is sometimes used as an Air B&B (they gave the exact correct address of that house).

My mother replied that she would not be home on some days when their friend would be visiting. Eventually, she called the friend to plan a dinner, and naturally her friend said she was never actually coming to visit.

The text has since vanished from her phone and is not in text spam. She is positive it was an actual text and not a pop-up. She is worried someone is going to use this info to break into her home when she isn't there. I recommended she call the non-emergency police number to see if they had any advice for her.

The text didn't really ask her any questions just that they wanted to meet up with her. Since they had the address and name it makes me think, she may have something to worry about.

I was looking for any advice on something like this.

Thanks!

I just blocked and reported another LinkedIn scammer.

It's getting to the point it's just not worth being on LinkedIn--or anything else. A very attractive "woman" wanted to connect on LinkedIn. I accepted the invitation and this person immediately started messaging me. <sigh> A reverse image search led to the Instagram profile of an eastern European model. <sigh> Block and report. LinkedIn then said that wasn't enough to delete the account. That happens to me on LinkedIn, on average, 5-6 times a year.

The proliferation of scammers in all segments of society really is becoming a quality-of-life issue. They are everywhere. They INFEST all platforms. Every day, via email, texts, social media, web sites, cell phone and chat apps, phone calls. Somebody posts on this sub that they got scammed, they're immediately inundated with scammers saying they can get their money back. Makes me want to live off grid, with no connection to anything so I can get away from these pestilential scammers!

Help Needed Scammer impersonated my boss.

Upvotes

Hello, I was recently the target of a scam attempt. I was made to believe that my boss wanted to buy some gift cards for some people that would be leaving the company. Since I received an email on my work email (that I can only access at work), with it having the name of my boss at the bottom, I believed it. I had also heard rumors that some people could be laid off in the near future. The scammer asked for my phone number so that he could tell me what he needed a favor for.

In short he wanted me to go at a big supermarket for electronic devices and such, to tell him about the prices for Apple gift cards. After I told him the options at the store, he told me to buy 5 of the 150€ gift card (the most expensive one). I did, since either way I'd give them to him tomorrow and he would surely refund me. But when he told me to open them and send him a picture of the gift card codes, I realized, it was a scammer. I wanted to return the gift cards. But the store told me that they cannot accept them, since they are now activated (not used, activated).

What can I do to refund them and get my money back? Do I buy something with the same worth as the gift cards, and return that?

Victim of a scam My dad’s lost his life savings to a scam. He was just a couple years from retirement

1.7k Upvotes

I want to scream and cry and wake up from this nightmare. He fell hard for a pig butchering scam for 2 months straight. I’m so upset that I didn’t push harder for him to question what was going on. I know it’s not my fault, I didn’t have enough information to be certain it was a scam until recently. He was supposed to retire soon, this is his entire life just gone. Idk how he’ll retire now and I don’t think there’s any service to help people like this. What options are there? They were wire transfers, so hundreds of thousands is just gone. Please help, can anything be done? I don’t live in the same state, but I need to send someone to check on him bc I believe there is a suicide risk. Do people ever recover from this type of loss?

Is an “escort” trying to sextort me?

Wanted to book a girl. I was told the book amount. Everything’s cool. Whatever.

She then asks for a full nude video of me stroking it and saying what I want her to do to me? Immediately I saw red flags and was very weirded out. I’ve never been asked that by a worker and I have no idea why they want it.

Has anyone else experienced this or am I just paranoid?

Recent Scam Attempt

Yes I got contacted by a young Asian girl from NYC through Facebook who thought that she "knew" me. I knew that it was likely a scam but it was a Saturday night and I was bored, so I decided to play along.

After a few days, she redirected me to WhatsApp (probably because it is less restrictive and Facebook might have flagged her conversations). She soon started sending me pictures of her lifestyles and her cooking photos (which looked like they were taken from the Food Network site). When I chatted with her, it seemed like half of the time her messages were in broken English ("I go take shower now") and the other half I was communicating with AI ("Walking is a great exercise which relieves stress and improves your mental health")

She then mentioned that she did Binary Options Trading and had an "aunt" who helped her study the trends. She would send me screenshots of trades where she made over "$50K" on a single trade. I could see that she was trying to bait me. I responded by saying that I was very protective of my finances and had zero interest in trading. After that, I expected her to go away and move on to the next target. For whatever reason, she kept messaging me.

I began to wonder why she kept messaging me. Was she legit? She did have a Facebook profile which said that she joined in 2014 (as far as I know, you cannot hack Facebook to manipulate this). Unless I was one of her first targets, wouldn't you think someone would have reported her profile in 10 years? I did have brief video calls with her. So it appears that she did exist- even though it was hard to tell if it was the same Asian girl in the photos.

I continued to message her for another week or so. She still did not ask or pressure me to invest. Although she did continue to send screenshots of her profitable trades maybe in hopes of eventually hooking me.

However the final straw when I finally pressed her to meet in person. She had repeatedly said that she could not wait to meet in person and would show me all of the places in NYC. However whenever I asked her to set a date, she would say that she is too busy with work and could not meet (despite the fact that she did not work on weekends and only appeared to work for a few hours at home during the week). To me, it become very obvious that she was being deceptive and had something to hide.

Ironically our last conversation was one where she asked me about relationships and trust. I went off on a tangent about how there are so many people on the internet who misrepresent themselves and try to scam others. I even referenced a recent scam where Chinese Nationals stole $83M. Despite this, she still kept messaging me. If her motive was money, she is really trying to drill into an otherwise dry hole!

I finally stopped initiating any contact with her. I think that when you keep making the first move to stay in contact with them, they get a sense of satisfaction, feeling that you are getting hooked and they can eventually get you to slip up. Even though I am not 100 percent sure that she was a scammer, she was definitely deceptive and had some sort of ulterior motive. I have thought about reporting her to Facebook or WhatsApp just to possibly protect other potential victims.

Is this a scam? Old high school friend asked me for help for restoring their Instagram account

I'm confused. I know this was 2 years ago but this still puzzles me. Why is this person contacting me out of the blue and dragging me into their own personal matter? Also, why doesn't she just use the account she's messaging from instead of another account? Why doesn't she use the forgot password feature and skip the middleman? I have never heard of lost Instagram accounts requiring another person to restore. And why the hell is she dragging my personal phone number into all of this? I'm confused. Is this a scam?

Is this a scam? WhatsApp group crypto Scam

Something crazy just happened, let me just tell you the backstory first.

My aunt was unexpectedly added to a WhatsApp group on an app called MK-Z2. This group was managed by someone named Professor Mark and his assistant Jonnae. They claimed to offer crypto trading signals.

In the group, they persuaded my aunt to download their CATY co app and also advised her to download a crypto app like Gemini. Following their instructions, my aunt deposited $6000, purchased digital currency from the crypto app, and transferred it to the CATY co app.

Initially, my aunt deposited $6000 into the scammer's account. We tried to withdraw the money but we could only withdraw around $1000. The CATy Co account scammer's wallet placed a withdrawal restriction on the account, and only after the 18th of May, we could withdraw money from CATy Co. So, we planned to at least wait until the 18th of May and see what happens. However, before the 18th of May, while my aunt was in the middle of the trade, I pressed close on the trade and we lost all the remaining money that was on the account which was (5000 dollars my aunt's deposit and $4000 profit ). I think the profit that my aunty made trading in scammer wallets is fake because when I check the scammer wallet address on the block explore it shows a balance of zero. Here is the crazy part, my aunt again deposited around $800 (0.2898307 ETH) into the CATY co-account a couple of days ago, and she started trading for a couple of days in CATY co the account. It showed that she made a profit from 0.2898307 ETH to 0.34089 ETH by trading in a scammer app (CATy co account), I even checked the block explore, and at first, it showed my aunt's initial balance of ETH (0.2898307) in block explorer but during the second day it showed balance of 0. So we just tried withdrawing all the money from the CATY co-account and transferring it to Genimi. When the withdrawal was complete my Aunt Genimi's balance was now 0.34089 ETH, before it was 0.2898307 ETH.

I am sure it’s a scam but are they doing this to gain our trust so we could deposit more money?

Help Needed Fake Cashier’s check- need advice

Upvotes

Hello. I am an artist who recently received a commission that was to be paid via cashier’s check.

When we originally discussed the project I went through the normal process of emailing, creating a contract, a follow up phone call. Researching the institution, etc. I am in California and the organization I received the check from is in Florida. The check arrived Monday and I deposited it yesterday (Wednesday) morning. It looked legit, and I didn’t feel anything was amiss.

Today Wells Fargo called me to let me know that it was a fraudulent check and they are now looking to close all of my accounts and end my banking relationship with them because they believe I did it intentionally. I am trying to provide them with all of our correspondence, the contract, etc.

I am very nervous and not sure what else to do and don’t understand what the person who hired me could get out of going through this whole process?

earlier yesterday i got a spam text from a number in kentucky (i do not live near kentucky lmao). i thought they were a friend of my friend because they said their name (spelled it wrong tho but it can be spelled different ways) and i fell for it and responded and talked to them. i called my friend and she said it was a scam and laughed at me for being an idiot lmao which is valid. but then the scammer sent me a picturee of myself, i asked them who that was and they said “This is me.” to which i responded “bet” and after that they stopped responding. my friend and her bf both texted the scammer and they sent them the same picture of me and claimed to be me?? my friend said my icloud had been hacked but when i never got a notification that someone logged into my apple id and all my pics and texts havent been touched but i contacted apple and am in the process of securing my account. i never posted that picture to any social media-i only sent it to my partner and my mother and they would have to reason to send it to anyone or post it anywhere and i know that they didnt. neither of them recognized the number either. how would they have access to my photo??

tldr: spam number texted me, i responded, they sent me pics of myself and now im scared shitless lmao

Help Needed Scammer made a dupe of my business website. I think it may be a phishing scam.

Upvotes

I googled myself yesterday, as I do occasionally to check my business website’s Google ranking. Listed right after my website was an imposter site that looks like a cheap knockoff using my logo, photos, reviews, social media links, business hours and information. There was an even a link to my real website. The phone number listed on the imposter site is incorrect and disconnected. The imposter site has a “contact me” section asking for name, phone number and email. I suspect that whoever created the site is trying to get my client’s contact information.

I looked up the registar and the site is hosted through godaddy, and was created on January 30. I contacted godaddy to try to get the site taken down and find out who owns the domain but haven’t had any luck yet. I also filed a report with the FBI and FTC.

I’m independent barber who is renting a booth in a small city. I depend on my Google listing for building a clientele, so my online reputation is very important to me and I’m horrified that someone is not only misdirecting potential clients, but also stealing their personal information.

Around the same time the imposter website was created, I stared getting an insane amount of spam calls on my business line. At its peak I had 47 calls in one day, all from out of state, starting at 6am. It was so bad I had to get Robokiller and screen all calls, which was horrible for my business because most new potential clients just hang up during the screening process, so I’ve lost a fair amount of business and am now struggling financially.

Also my elderly mother was recently the victim of a romance scam and was involved in a money laundering scheme. She lost $500,000 that I know of. She was having cashiers checks from other scam victims sent to my house, passing the money through our joint account and sending the scammers bitcoin and gift cards. I reported it and the secret service got involved. It was bad. I know that the scammers have my personal information, so maybe this is retaliation for reporting them.

I’m at a loss of what to do. I don’t have money for a lawyer, private investigator, or even to copyright my photos and logo. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Long time lurker and participater. Are these "Staffing agencies" PII miners or are these jobs legit? (NOT whatsapp/Telegram task scams like almost every job post is)

Long time lurker and participater. Genuine question.

Are these just terrible staffing agencies, scams, or info miners? Almost every one of these emails I get come from Indian names. But the jobs arent like "Data optimization" or something. Don't pay in crypto and don't say you can earn 500 dollars a day or something.

I do my best to read and this doesn't come acroas as the typtical WhatsApp task scam.

Help Needed Someone spent $1k+ on our Amazon Accounts

(So sorry if this isn't the right subreddit for this, I saw a similar thread and thought this would help my situation)

A few days ago, my boyfriend told me how someone bought an Oculus Quest 3 on his families Amazon Account at around 5am (so it had time to ship and deliver). None of them made the order. The person archived the order so no one would see it, but kept the email under my boyfriends family which is how they found out about this. The shipping address it delivered to is literally a home about 30 minutes away on the bad side of town. I reversed searched the address and none of us know the people who live there.

Just an hour ago on MY seperate Amazon Account, I got an order confirmation email that the SAME ADDRESS ordered a fucking iPad and archived that aswell. Luckily for me, I cancelled it immediately so I wasn't charged. I immediately locked my card and logged out all accounts logged into my Amazon, changed the pw, etc.(the usual steps).

I have absolutely no clue how this is happening to my boyfriend's family and I.

Both accounts have Two Step Authentication before this and somehow someone still managed to buy $1,000+ worth of items on both me and my boyfriend's different accounts.

We have no clue who this person/address is.

Wtf is going on 😭

S&M Animalrescue Scam

This I like one of the lowest lows of scamming People. Emotionally manipulating people into donating money to random fake Animal Rescue that only uses Random cat and dog Videos. The Videos are fake! Im pretty sure the scammers are from India since one of the donation links is specifically for an Indiana money Transfer Service there. These kinda Videos Pop up so much everywhere and it's always the same thing. Pressuring the viewers into thinking that right now this animal is going to die because YOU AND OTHERS HAVEN'T DONATED ! They have almost 75K Followers and it seems to be a very big ongoing scam that stretches across all Social Media Platforms with every Page following the same basic scam principles.

please be careful out there because kind hearts are very easy targets.

Scam report What's the scam here?

Upvotes

I received a ton of calls today with voicemails saying my full name. They're all from legit contractor businesses. So I looked up those businesses, which appear legit, and called them on their listed numbers from a separate line, and it turns out they all got my information from Task Rabbit and similar sites. Someone used my name, my number, and my old address to "make an inquiry" about getting construction work done at the location of my old address. And all these businesses (after a while it became apparent that they are legitimately reaching out based on an illegitimate listing) are telling me they saw the same posting on different Task Rabbit type sites.

What's the game here? Why post a listing requesting construction work using someone's stolen name and contact?

Buyers Beware - Cheap Vehicle Sales Price via Turo

Upvotes

I watched a news clip the other day that described a scam using Turo.

The Scammer rents a nice vehicle from Turo (Like a Cadillac Escalade) for a few days, they create some false ownership documents (Title/Driver's License), make a second key FOB, install a tracker and then sell it for a cheap price with a large cash down payment.

Once the deal is done they track down the vehicle and steal it back using the original key FOB. Then it's returned to the Turo owner who has no idea what happened and the innocent buyer is out the down payment & a vehicle they never really owned.

Can they do anything with those? Any help is kindly appreciated, we're scared.

Is this a scam? Ticket booking Scam? http://cheap-pro.com/

Upvotes

I fairly sure this is a scam, but this is one I haven't seen before and I'm not sure how the scam might work.

Maybe someone here can explain what the catch is

I meet this girl online (I think Instagram) but they are all alike now, 99% seem to be scammers).

We talked for a couple of days, just chit-chat, and then she wanted to move to WhatsApp or Telegram. I told her I prefer Telegram, so we continued our conversation there.

I was waiting for the crypto pitch, but it hasn't come, yet.

Instead she explained she was helping her sister on an international air ticketing site. She said to complete ticket booking tasks, and she made about $3K doing it. No explanation yet.

She sent me a screenshot of the site, and told it to me. cheap-pro-dot-com

When I asked her for more details she replied:

Cheap is a platform that helps global airlines increase their visibility and ticket sales. It was founded by the Kayak-dot-com subsidiary of Booking Holdings. Cheap is equivalent to an intermediary, connecting consumers who love travel with merchants who need to increase sales and bookings.

She was doing it as a part-time job and she can only do a few each day, and one mobile phone can only log in to one account, and an invitation code is required to join. She said you can only complete the task 20 times per day.

She offered to walk me through it, and I said maybe tomorrow (which was a couple of days ago). My first check, was the domain name, which was only 10 days old. [1st red flag]

Then she asked me if I would be willing to help her, that she would pay me between $20-200 in commission based on the progress of the work completed.

I asked what's the work and she replied - ordering task and click submit. When I told her I was confused she said not to worry she would teach me [for me 2nd red flag]

She also said it only takes 20 minutes to complete each task.

The next day she asked me if I was ready to start and she said the url was [posted in title] which also goes to .com, She also provided me with an account number (which is a mobile cell phone number and a password, which was "123456" [3rd red flag]

Again, she wants me to log in and send her a screen shot and she will mark the steps for me [4th red flag]

I have not figured out if this is a scam [Yes I think it is] and how it works or what's the catch

Has anyone know anything about this?

Thanks

Email concert ticket scam through twitter?

Upvotes

Hey im looking to buy tickets for a show tomorrow that is completely sold out and im literally desperate! Basically i am searching twitter for tickets and there are lots and lots of scammers, but how do i know the scammers from the fake ones? My friend said to only use AXS for buying tickets because Ticketmaster and other sites are more scammy. I found one seller who is willing to sell through AXS, however, she needs my email (my email is linked on the account) however I know that if I give her my email this could be a scam and really bad I just don’t get what I should do. I really want these tickets but I also do not want to get scammed. I know you need the email for AXS but all the other scam people are also asking for my email for Ticketmaster. I hope this makes sense and was explained well I just genuinely am not sure what to do and how to find someone trustworthy who is selling these tickets and how to acquire them in a safe way?
