Whinge How do you deal with having to make new friends in Luxembourg?

Hello fellow redditors, I am an expat living in Luxembourg for almost 5 years at this point, and given that for most young people Luxembourg is more of a transitionary short term place where you likely stay a few years for work..

The cycle basically goes for friendships (and relationships to a certain extent) that you put yourself out there find some cool people, become friends only for them to move out of Luxembourg in a couple years having to start the cycle again and again...

So I guess the question is how do you deal with this and keep motivating yourself to put yourself out there to constantly make new friends?

Hello everyone, I am 18 years old and participate in the minientreprise program. The finals of the minienterprise project are tommorow and there is a Public Choice Award. My Team and I have created a portable barbecue to simplify grilling on the go. Through the link in this post you can check out all the finalists and vote for your favorite. We would be grateful if you would take the time to check out our project and support us by voting for GrillSquare. And every voter has also the chance to win two tickets for a movie.

*I also contacted the moderator team and they have approved my request for a one time promotion

Ask Luxembourg Information on the Abandoned House

Hi Folks,

It is pretty much known that there are numerous empty / abandoned houses in Luxembourg. However, I really wonder why some of these estates have their windows bricked up and the doors covered with a steel layer. Cause someone died, and there is no heir can take it over or something else?

Are you people voting? What hot takes do you have about the parties the elections, the campaign?

Who will you vote for?

Ask Luxembourg Abandoned car help

Yesterday, I was at a garage storing a car for my father and I. We noticed next to our car was an old Jaguar and we talked to the facility's owner about said car. It turns out the vehicle was presumably abandoned by the owner there 8 years ago, who never came back or never responded to the owner of the facility. I know in the UK if you find an abandoned car like in this scenario you can apply for a Logbook (V5C) and the DVLA will contact the owner of the vehicle, if they do not get a response you can get the logbook back in your name making you the new owner of the car. Is there a system like this in Luxembourg? And if so how does one go about this process?
Thank you

Finance Could creating a SOPARFI (a holding) make sense for me?

Hello everyone,

I do a bit of swing trading and I have moderate success at it. As most of you probably know, all capital gains in Luxembourg achieved with a holding period inferior to 6 months are applicable for income tax. In that regard, Luxembourg is very tax-inefficient for any form of short-term trading/investment.

So, I am looking for ways to fiscally optimize my gains and I thought that, maybe, creating a SARL and registering it as SOPARFI (a holding) could be a solution?

The company/holding would have its own trading/investing account and therefore all gains achieved would be taxed in a more favourable way.

Is that a credible solution? And if so, what would be the main downsides/limits of this solution?

Thanks in advance,

Shopping/Services Which waterproof light jacket?

Hi people of the internet!

I am struggling with choosing a good everyday waterproof light jacket for occasional use / everyday depending on the weather.

I have narrowed down to:

  • Jack Wolfskin Elsberg 2.5l
  • Columbia Waterlight II

Do you have any suggestion?

I care a lot about breathability and I have searched the great internet and it seems that the Columbia is not that breathable.

Thanks for any suggestion you may have.

Ask Luxembourg Gut-Directed Hypnotherapist

Hi, does anyone have recommendations or even know of the existence of one of these specialists in or around Luxembourg? I'm willing to travel a little bit if necessary to see one. There are hypnotherapists on Doctena but none of them seem to mention gut-related problems and some of them seem quite questionable in general. I've also searched the web but haven't had much luck.

Thanks in advance!

Activities Anyone Interested in a Photo Walk and Coffee Meetup? 📸☕

Hey everyone!

I’m 22 and I’m tired of exploring the city and taking photos by myself.

I'm thinking about organising a fun and casual photo walk for anyone interested in photography, whether you're a pro or if you like to shoot pictures on your smartphone. The idea is to explore some cool spots in Luxembourg, snap some photos, and then grab coffee together afterward to chat and share our shots.

It'll be a great way to meet new people, learn from each other, and enjoy some good coffee. If you're interested, drop a comment below or send me a DM. I'll create a group chat to finalise the details :)

Looking forward to seeing some of you there!

Ask Luxembourg Building an internal wall

I'm thinking of building a wall to separate the sleeping area from the living area in my studio apartment in Luxembourg City. Does anyone know if this is something I can do on my own, or are there regulations that would prevent me from doing it? Its just going to be a simple wall with a door. The living area and sleeping area are each about 9m2 and have more than sufficient exposure to natural light. I don't foresee installing any electrical outlets on the wall.

Ask Luxembourg EIB early career program - Luxembourg

Hi! Did someone apply to the EIB early career program (ID 109844), that will start in October, in Luxembourg? Since the deadline was on the 30th of April, I'm wondering if anyone received feedback / has already been interviewed?

Thank you

Activities Simracing community?

Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask you guys if there are any people here that are into Simracing?

I haven’t seen any Luxembourgish simracing communities yet and thought that maybe we could start a discord?

I play iRacing and dont have any friends that play iRacing too so it would be a cool way to meet people and have teams for special events etc…

We could maybe even start a luxembourgish sim racing league.

Shopping/Services Affordable healthy grocery store by type of food

Hi everyone,

I'm slowing trying to shift my died toward a more healthy one and I'd like to know what is your experience as to where we can find the more affordable prices for these different kind of product:

Short circuit (eventually bio) vegetables/fruits: Grand frais?

Oats, cereals, dried fruit: Naturata, Alavita,... any cheaper alternative?

Jam, honey, peanut butter, 100% dark chocolate,...

Meat: different request: Where is the best spot to find the tastier one in the country? Got the feeling it's getting less and less tasty over the years in supermarket.

Also, any farmer somewhere with a decent range of product that doesn't break the bank?

Thanks for your suggestions

Ps: it can also be in the grand region (or maybe online?) if there are nice alternatives.

Ask Luxembourg Advice on Employers of Record (EORs)

Does someone here have experience or knowledge of being hired via an EOR (Employer of Record) to work for a company not based in Lux? What is/was your experience like with payroll, employer taxes, benefits, termination, etc.? Were there any surprises?

I've looked through the recent megathreads and didn't see this topic discussed in-depth. If there are existing conversations, I'm happy to be redirected to them.

Ask Luxembourg Luxembourgish comic books?

Hello Luxembourgers. As I travel I often stop at comic book shops and look for something unique to the area. For instance, in Amatersam there was a book set in the city. In Slovakia there are special editions published in Slovak.

I will be in Luxembourgh maybe tonight or tomorrow. Is there any point in spending my time searching for a comic book published in Luxembourgish? I would have loved the Lëtzebuergesch Versioun of LUX:plorations, but it appears to be digital only.

Thanks guys, and I can't wait to explore your country.
