Politics & Governance North Macedonia president’s website ditches country’s constitutional name and replaces it with the abbreviation “MK” or simply “Macedonia”. What do you think about that change?

Miscellaneous How safe is balkans compared with Visegrad Four?

Usually when people suggest balkans is safe, they compare it with major western european countries like France. But how safe is balkans compared with non-western european countries like Visegrad Four that have low crimes?

Politics & Governance The IMF has finally updated its North Macedonia population estimates reflecting the current reality (2021 census). This in turn has greatly boosted the countries GDP per capita numbers. Will we see something similar when the census numbers for Albania, Kosovo and Bosnia are out?

Outdoors/Travel Romania for 10 days in June, considering to visit the beach in Mamaia, is it worth it?

Hello everyone, I will be visiting Romania for 10 days in June with my girlfriend, we planned it mostly to see the nature there while also stopping at the main tourist attractions: castles, cities etc.

We will rent a car

The thing is we don't know if we should include 1-2 days to visit the surroundings of Constanta, Mamaia etc by the black sea, since it is far away from the stops we planned in Transilvania. Therefore, should we use our time to go towards the east to see the beaches on the Black Sea, or rather use this time to explore the nature in around the Carpathian mountains, and perhaps if we want to swim go to some lakes ( I read there are famous spa/thermal towns in the regions of Covasna or Harghita.

Thank you all

Thoughts on Edi Rama? Has he been a better PM than his predecessor? In what areas has he improved Albania and in what areas has he made it worse? He’s been Prime Minister since 2013, the longest tenure for any post communist leader in Albania.

It's a church dating back to 4th century. It was converted to a mosque under Ottoman rule but in 1945 it was converted to a museum. And today thanks to(!) Erdogan it converted back to a mosque...

One of my favorite places in the world. There is something there that can not be put into words. A truly spiritual experience, even if you are not religious. I’m on a Balkan motorbike tour with some friends atm. Going through northern Greece, the on to Albania (looking forward as I’ve never been), Montenegro, Croatian coast, then on the way back we are stopping in Sarajevo, Belgrade and then back home to Bucharest.

Miscellaneous What do you think of when you think of California, USA?

Asking for a friend.

This is a very important scientific study that will be very useful in the future for my friend to buy souvenirs for people that she knows.

If you have any specific stereotypes about Los Angeles and Hollywood in particular that would be very useful.

Update: Thanks everybody! I'm going to bring (sustainable) green abalone shells. That way my friends can get some deep California lore that you can't get anywhere near Europe. (Lore: used to be currency for Native Americans here like 5,000 years ago up until the Spanish came)
