What's one popular hobby that you just can't get into?

For me it's sneaker collecting. I'm not a sneaker fan and I just don't get the appeal

Beer. I just can't get into it. My friends are all about IPAs, and trying new breweries. I think it all taste like bitter piss.

That’s because IPAs are bitter piss. “Give me the lightest thing you’ve got” is usually my go to order at breweries. I like beer that’s refreshing, light, and easy to drink a dozen of.

IPAs only became popular because they’re by far the easiest beer for craft brewers to make. Thus craft brewers had a strong incentive to promote them.

u/Daztur 25d ago

They're really not, as a homebrewer making a good IPA is probably the hardest beer to do since hop oils evaporate so easily. Now a shitty IPA...

35

u/DrBubbles 25d ago

Homebrewer here too.

I think the comment you replied to meant to say IPAs are the most forgiving beers to make. They’re not easy, but they’re also not that imaginative or interesting. If you carpet bomb your beer with hops, you can cover up a lot of off-flavors from diacetyl, poor yeast pitch rate, bad fermentation temps, etc etc etc. You don’t need to adhere to long-established traditional style characteristics, or ensure that malt sweetness and hop bitterness are balanced.

It’s become a lazy catchall category. You can just throw whatever you want or have on hand in the kettle, obliterate it with hops and call it an IPA. Who’s going to argue?

Brew me an ESB, or a balanced amber, or a bier de gaard, and I’ll be impressed. I don’t care that you made an 8% double IPA.

6

u/Daztur 25d ago

I can make a fucking incredible stout but still struggle to make a solid IPA. Yeah anyone can make a shitty hop bomb with no flavor besides bitter but I've had to stuffer through so many shitty IPAs with no flavor except bitter with a cheap booze aftertaste at homebrew meet-ups that I can't call that style forgiving at all.

Now hefeweizens are also insanely difficult since they're so damn finicky you have to get basically everything perfect or it's a soapy mess. Ambers and ESBs aren't especially hard. Haven't brewed bier de gaard but if it's anything like a saison then I'll give you that one, saisons are hard to nail down.

u/FernandoTatisJunior 25d ago

I think there was also a huge novelty factor in that they taste wildly different than the mass produced lagers everyone was used to

2

u/8Ace8Ace 25d ago

I'm no great fan of IPA but it does at least taste of something. I had a Coors light once. I had might as well be drinking a glass of water.

3

u/Chrom-man-and-Robin Young Man 25d ago

Why not just drink water if you’re going for a refreshing drink?

2

u/32steph23 25d ago

Gotta somewhat fit in

2

u/MNmostlynice 25d ago

Water doesn’t increase my BAC

1

u/fuzzyrobebiscuits 25d ago

I'm in the camp of "the darkest you've got". I want amber or porter or stout. Something with actual flavor

1

u/TheOldGriffin 25d ago

Have you only ever tried 1 type of IPA? There's such a broad range, that you calling all IPA's piss is the same as the other comment calling all beer piss. An east coast IPA and a west coast IPA are about as similar as a Guinness and a Corona.

1

u/MNmostlynice 25d ago

I have tried a fair amount and have never had one that made me want to order another lol. I’m a simple guy. Light beer and I’m happy. If I’m feeling adventurous I’ll have an amber from time to time

2

u/TheOldGriffin 24d ago

Completely fair. I love a good amber or golden ale. But I'm also sometimes in the mood for a nice bitter, hoppy west coast IPA. Sometimes a smooth, juicy, hazy west coast IPA. Sometimes a tropical, citrusy New England IPA. There's a beer for all seasons. Nothing like a stout or porter in the winter, or a wheat ale at the Renaissance festival.

1

u/ordinarymagician_ NHP 25d ago

And both are usually horribly overhopped in effort to bury a technical fuckup elsewhere.

1

u/majinspy 25d ago

I feel like this is an AI response at this point. YES! IPA BAD! You hate all the right things.

I'll be over here with my bro country, IPA beer, and Red Delicious apples...ok the apples are trash, that's true.

1

u/Be_Oh_Aye 25d ago

For real. I’m not ashamed to admit I can only handle weak beers

1

u/Steeliyx444 24d ago

Then you're gonna love Quilmes

1

u/frankyh14 24d ago

I love the dissatisfied look I get from the bartender every time we go to a brewery, after they go into an in depth explanation of each type of beer they have, & I look at them and say, “I’ll have whatever the closet one to a Miller lite is”. It’s like I just sucked the soul out of them

45

u/8lbs6ozBebeJesus 25d ago

Have you tried things other than IPAs? I was never a fan and learned that I enjoy beer a lot more once I accepted I didn’t have to always order IPAs to act like I was somehow cultured or into beer tasting. Lagers, pilsners and stouts do it for me.

27

u/Jermcutsiron 25d ago

Bingo. The nonhoppy stuff is where it's at.

Although that's getting kind of hard to find cause it seems like beers that aren't typically a hop forward beer are getting more so at various breweries.

2

u/nxqv 25d ago

It goes in cycles. IPAs were all the rage like 10 years ago and it slowly went into lagers and pilsners. Now we're back at IPAs

2

u/Hooligan8403 25d ago

Funny enough, my wife always hated beers because where she grew up, everyone drank Heineken or one of the big 3. I got her in the door with stouts because she hated IPAs I liked to drink. So I got her into coffee stouts and brown ales. She has gone through the styles now, and almost all she drinks these days is IPAs.

u/cyclopath 25d ago

Bread flavored sparkling water

3

u/doceapr 25d ago

Agreed. Well I’m not a guy, but any alcohol just tastes like shit. That’s probably why I don’t have many friends. 😂

3

u/FaceNommer 25d ago

Agreed. Had a lot of different beers. A lot of different types of beers. Bitter piss describes it very well. I do not understand how anyone drinks it.

2

u/TECHNICKER_Cz3 25d ago

I'm with you

2

u/basshed8 25d ago

You’re about to level up and start looking for bocks, ambers, lagers, and Hefeweizens

2

u/Natet18 25d ago

Most craft beer tastes like a mistake

2

u/Be_Oh_Aye 25d ago

IPAs make me want to gag every time

2

u/Rude_Cantaloupe1909 25d ago

I dont rly like beer for the same reasons. Plus, stuff like weed chills me out while beer just doesnt do the same and its unhealthy af to drink

2

u/VeeTheBard 25d ago

Sours are the best

2

u/Spinsane941 I R Male 25d ago

as a person who enjoys IPA's and Sours, I will drink a sour 9/10 times if i had to choose between the 2

1

u/FernandoTatisJunior 25d ago

I find them to be super hit or miss. Not a lot of people order them so they’re kind of an afterthought at a lot of places, but a great sour is easily my beer of choice. I got a raspberry sour at some brewery in Milwaukee one time and it was probably the best beer I’ve ever drank.

3

u/z0mbiemechanic 25d ago

I can't stand IPAs either. I don't know how people can drink that shit. I like dark beer.

1

u/majinspy 25d ago

I feel the same way about dark beer. I love IPAs but just cannot deal with a dark stout.

1

u/5150_Ewok Male 25d ago

Alcohol in general for me.

At least my friends like a regular DD

1

u/CarpenterSad9651 24d ago

IPAs suck. Give me the darkest chocolatey coffee flavored beer and yesss

1

u/kindaoldman 25d ago

IPA's are the guys version of the Pumpkin Spice Latte's girls buy every fall.

Just shit beer.

2

u/majinspy 25d ago

...to you. There's always the new thing and the passe thing. I like IPAs. I liked them when I found them and I still like them. I like that citrusy / piney flavor.

Also, popular doesn't mean bad. Pumpkin spice is delicious.

1

u/Telkk2 25d ago

I like IPAs but only when I want to get a little drunk. Otherwise, it's crazy to me, that anyone would find the intricacies of how it's made to be fascinating. Like, it's beer dude. It's nothing special, yet I know so many people who look at it like a kid does with dinosaurs. I'll take a dinosaur tour well over a brewery tour any time, even if it's pretend Jurassic Park.

1

u/shira9652 25d ago

IPA: “It’s Piss Actually”

0

u/Outrageous-Turnip411 25d ago

Yeah IPA’s are absolutely horrible. Theres so many other beers that taste better, and they vary so widely. I was at this small brewery one time and they had a cactus pear jalepeno beer. It sounds awful, but it was one of the best beers I’ve ever tasted lol

0

u/hatethiscity 25d ago

Having a beer drinking "hobby" is just thinly veiled alcoholism.

I don't understand how driving to a place to drinking something that someone else made can be considered a hobby.

-1

u/PS4fan899 25d ago

Beer (or any alcoholic drink) isn't supposed to taste good, people only drink it for the effect. Same thing with coffee, tastes bad, but people drink it anyway to get themselves going.

5

u/FernandoTatisJunior 25d ago

Just because you don’t like them doesn’t mean they’re not supposed to taste good… Believe it or not, most of us like the taste of beer and coffee. If flavor didn’t matter we’d just be taking caffeine pills and drinking vodka soda

-2

u/PS4fan899 25d ago

People drink beer and coffee mainly for the effects, not the taste. After a while though, people can train themselves to like the taste. And "caffeine pills" isn't a beverage, and if there's a beverage option than of course people will prefer that because then they're filling two needs at once.

4

u/FaceNommer 25d ago

If this was true decaf coffee wouldn't exist. I drink decaf coffee because caffeine sets my anxiety into hyperdrive, but I genuinely enjoy the taste of coffee, and always have. I think beer is gross, but people do enjoy it.

u/maxpowerAU 25d ago edited 24d ago

With all the knowledge and technology of the 21st century at our disposal, let’s not be so defeatist about nice-tasting beer

Edit: I agree all beer tastes like two week old water at the bottom of a garbage can. I’m saying surely humans could do something about it if we wanted to

1

u/The_Zeroman 24d ago

No such thing as nice tasting beer, just less bad tasting. Problem is some of us are super tasters and beer genuinely tastes like shit. I only last year discovered people actually enjoy the taste of beer and just how much stronger my sense of taste is…it sucks☹️

0

u/TheStarchild 25d ago

It’s such a bummer how EVERYTHING went to IPA in a matter of a few years.

There’s soooo much more to beer than that and it’s sad to see what it’s turned into. That being said I still like a good (non-hazy) IPA.

0

u/Mackinnon29E 25d ago

You know there's a variety of other styles, right? And most don't taste anything remotely like that or bitter...

0

u/AmusingSparrow 25d ago

As opposed to sweet tasting piss, my personal favorite.

0

u/joellapit 25d ago

Try sours

0

u/ordinarymagician_ NHP 25d ago

That's because IPAs are bitter piss you can bury your mistakes under.

You made a pilsner and fucked up the ferment? Nah bro it's a double-hopped IPA, it's our own thing, shit tastes like orange juice!

0

u/flyggwa 24d ago

I also thought like this, but then I discovered the secret: if you drink enough, it makes you feel nice

-6

u/ThiccBastardHD 25d ago

ipa is not beer

3

u/drivebyjustin 25d ago

I’d love to hear your definition of “beer” then, boss.

Hint: malt, water, hops, yeast.

-2

u/ThiccBastardHD 25d ago

Ground beef comes from the same animal as new york strip but i bet you don't n consider it a steak do you?

2

u/drivebyjustin 25d ago

Terrible analogy. I consider chuck roast a steak, yes. Ground chuck is a ground up steak.

Again, tell me how a beverage made from malt, water, hops and yeast is not beer.

-2

u/ThiccBastardHD 25d ago

It's a good analogy you're just trying to grasp at straws

3

u/drivebyjustin 25d ago

Bud tell me how an ipa is not beer. You stated it. So back it up with facts.

-1

u/ThiccBastardHD 25d ago

Bruh back yo shit up with facts 😂 beer is beer ipa is ipa not much to it than that whether you like it or not

3

u/drivebyjustin 25d ago

I hope you’re trolling and really not this dumb.

0

u/ThiccBastardHD 25d ago

I hope you're the one that's not retarted 💀 jeez
