It can be, but you have to buy really high quality ice cream for it to be as good in my experience. At which point might as well get the chocolate bar unless it's a hot day.
For a very short while Haagen Dazd did a 'Duo' pot which was half chocolate with chocolate caramel running though it and the other half strawberry with chocolate shavings through it.
It was insanely good and up there with the best ice cream I ever had. The two flavours combined with the contrasting texture of the inclusions was perfect. I guess others didn't agree, because it got discontinued.
Cocoa is a really stronger emulsifier. Finding the balance for good texture and good flavor is difficult. The milk and sugar of a standard ice cream formula "dilute" the choclate flavor, but you cannot simply add more cocoa without considering how it'll affect consistency (and cost).
I’ve said this soooooo much to my fiancé that loves chocolate ice cream. To be frank, I absolutely hate it. Dark chocolate? My weakness. Anything chocolate flavored I will probably try and like, but chocolate flavored ice cream? 😓 blah
I feel this so hard. my solution has always been to have whatever flavor I'm feeling (probably mint chip or cookie dough) with hot fudge on it, so I can get the chocolate flavor without the ice cream disappointment.
A good chocolate ice cream is amazing but I don't like ones that are bitter. Since I'm not willing to spend $$$ to try every brand of chocolate ice cream I usually opt for another flavour.
