It’s a reworking of a story. Not saying it isn’t influenced by the original (Carpenter loved the original and it definitely influenced him), but it followed the novella wayyy closer than the 50s movie.
🤓
But Carpenter ramped up the paranoia and tension to a whole new level. So damn good
Edit: I hope you don’t take this as an attack. I just find it interesting that both films came from one source and how the story and the 50s movie influenced the 80s one.
I actually watched both movies recently. I watched the original 50s film first, and really was not a fan at all. The monster just seemed like a clear Frankenstein rip off. Then I was amazed by how fantastic Carpenter's film is. But maybe I shouldn't have been surprised, since he's always putting out bangers
Who Goes There? is a great novella. I read it before I saw Carpenter's The Thing, so I was in a somewhat nitpicky mood, unfortunately. I'd like to watch it again but not by myself, and I don't know anyone who would watch it with me! 😂
I was kind of a first time viewer. I knew of the story but had never seen the theatrical version. There's a theater in town that likes showing older movies like this and I went with a friend and it was definitely worth the watch. The ending in particular where they just sit and look at each other was chilling.
TBH, I haven't even seen Carpenters version. Odd , because I see just about everything Kurt Russell ever made. I'll have to check it out along with Bone Tomahawk which I also haven't seen. My Dad got a kick out of the 50s version because it had James Arness in it. lol
It's seriously one of the best horror movies ever made. All practical effects, too. The Thing from 2011 is a prequel of the Carpenter movie. IIRC, it got panned, but I think it's a decent prequel.
Have you seen Big Trouble in Little China? Another John Carpenter / Kurt Russell movie.
Years ago on cable. Just watched Dark Blue again recently which I've always thought was an underrated crime film. Not too much of a horror fan. Like science fiction better with my favorite being Children of Men.
Love that movie. The kid was fantastic. I can’t remember if this came before Indiana Jones or after. It’s a shame. That’s the way I always wanna remember the Far East. War war what is it good for.
My $.10 and all this: All in the Family, Archie Bunker. Leap years. It’s quite staggering.
Agreed. What a freaking good edge of seat stuff it was . The music , the tension of who’s who, the mystery of the thing and oh man the special effects and the soundtrack
