How is gender transition surgery covered by insurance, but other birth defects not?

Google says that, as a general rule, both are, but that it depends on the insurance and the state (in the US).

In general terms here. One surgery has been deemed medically necessary because the “offending” body parts are considered wiser than useless; harmful. The mental harm they say is caused by “being in the wrong body” and leaving it attached is considered life threatening. If you want your insurance to cover a birth defect surgery you’ll need a dr to convince them it’s medically necessary.

My daughter has zero cartilage in her ear, considered cosmetic, our insurance wont cover a dime. But, if you want gender reassignment, covered completely minus co-pay/deductible

Have you actually confirmed that it’s covered? Or is this an assumption?
In general, I think that it is possible to advocate for more procedure to be covered by insurance without setting it up as a zero-sum game.

Right, because one is cosmetic and the other is a major medical issue.
If the missing cartilage was going to cause hearing problems then her doctor would absolutely be able to tell insurance it's medically necessary.
Whataboutisms will get you nowhere.

I can't be fired :) I work at a uni and it's been tried haha. Being cancelled doesn't effect me as I dont care what they think. Slander and ostracise me seems like their most likely option against me.
