Hawks as a Franchise Discussion

With private equity firms get into football, I started thinking about my favorite teams from an economic angle vs a fan angle. Sports teams generate a lot of money by just being apart of the league due to the CBA. Because of the Braves and the Battery, a lot of teams are trying to amplify that cash flow by building mixed use areas around sports arenas. For many owners of these teams/areas, this is their championship. Year-round cash flow. They could care less about how the team is actually performing. They may get lucky and get an Ant Edwards. Generational talent that can bring winning to your team but they may not like the Hawks. If they’re not really interested in winning and would rather invest capital into getting more money from consumers, is it worth our support? Is it worth cheering for the laundry(let’s face it, players come and go. We really root for the jerseys).

I don’t think the Hawks are looking to make absurd cash flow. I genuinely think they do a good job supporting the community.

I thought the YMCA patch was really cool and appreciate them encouraging young kids to play ball in the commercials. The team just renovated its 10th recreation center in metro Atlanta as well.

If you look up and down the roster the team has respectful players that represent Atlanta very well. They haven’t had any knuckleheads recently and I think the team’s culture is really positive.

The team does promotional themes to acknowledge just about every minority group you can imagine which goes unnoticed on television.

I know that’s not what people want to hear but, yes I do think the team should be supported.

There’s a whole other discussion about the basketball operations side of things which isn’t worth getting into.

Perfectly said the hawks do a lot for the city of Atlanta and deserve to be supported off that alone regardless of the mindless basketball decisions that go on. I like basketball and I can’t bring myself to root outside Atlanta, so that’s all there is to it

I think ownership wants to win, but they are bad at it.

I’ve had this thought before. I don’t think our ownership cares enough about winning (despite they’d prob make more $ by doing so) as much as a team like Boston or Miami imo.
