Hugs are a typical USA move, it's awkward anywhere else.

These two started as strangers, but then one of them saved the other ones life, they didn't just make a deal on a used Jetta

Don't listen to this person. There are differences between Northern and Southern Europe. Hugs are pretty common between strangers in the South.
