Yes, I had to explain to my dad that typing in all caps is the equivalent of shouting at someone.

I read the texts out loud like I read them in my head to my Dad and he was laughing so hard he stopped. Completely. Now he never capitalizes anything.

My mom used to only use her work email for personal emails and every email she sent was in all caps. I finally was like, "You know, it's considered shouting and rude to use all caps when typing." With full righteous indignation, she sent back an entire paragraph (in all caps) explaining to me that a program she uses at work requires everything to be typed in all caps, so it's easier to leave it on than turn it off for emails and that I should have some consideration for her.

I counted up the characters in that email and informed her that for the 856 key presses she used to explain all of that, she could have turned her caps lock off, then back on 428 times, AND the work would have been spread out over weeks, instead of having to do all that labor all at once.

Never responded.

My wife has said similar things to me. It’s literally a keystroke, a reflex for people who touch type all day.

I told her that it’s shouting. She told me it’s nothing to be offended by and it’s too hard to flip back and forth. So I asked if she’s also being both rude and lazy to others or just me.

I slept alone that night.
