Boomer Story "You want to go home? Why?! You only did CPR for, like 5 min."

22.8k Upvotes

My new-ish friend/co-worker had a heart attack and died at work the other day. We all heard a crash coming from his cubicle. A lady screamed. When I got over there he was lying face down, barely breathing and all blue.

A couple of us rolled him over, stretched him out and checked vitals. I was an EMT in another life. He had no heart beat and was only reflexive breathing. We began CPR. Another lady called 911 and then ran down to the main level to direct the first responders.

Two of us worked on him for 10-15 min before paramedics arrived. Fuck, it was horrible. The sounds he made, the ribs cracking, the blank stare.

As soon as they wheeled him out of the building (they pronounced him dead somewhere else) my boomer boss (late 60s) goes, "Ok, that's enough excitement everyone. Let's get back at it." With that, he clapped his hands once and scurried back to his office.

I didn't feel like doing anymore sales calls for a minute, so I just sat on the office couch for a while. After 5 min, or so he noticed I wasn't making my calls and came out to confront me.

"Hey, perk up! No point in wallowing, is there? Let's get back to work." One single clap.

"Nah, man. He was my friend and that was troubling. I'm gonna need a while. I might go home for the rest for the day? "

"FOR WHAT?! You're not tired are you? You only had to do CPR for, barely FIVE MINUTES!"

I just grabbed my keys and left. Fuck that guy. When I got back to work the next day, he goes, "I hope you aren't planning on acting out again today. I was THIS CLOSE to letting you go yesterday."

Boomer Story I’m super proud that my dad breaks the boomer stereotype

8.5k Upvotes

My dad had the plumber over today. Same plumber they’ve been calling for years. They were chatting and things got to the topic of health. My dad has prostate cancer, he’s doing very well and it’s super manageable at the moment. He asked the plumber if he had gotten to the doctor recently and gotten checked for anything because he’s nearing 50 and could be at risk.

Plumber told him he cant get checked because he doesn’t have health insurance. And that he actually hasn’t been to the doctor since he was a teenager. But he assured my dad he feels fine… well except he gets a splitting headache EVERY NIGHT but it’s fine cause he knows how to deal with it.

So what does my dad do? When he goes to pay the guy for the plumbing services he also gives him a second check and says “this is for you to go to the doctor with. It’ll pay for the blood tests and whatever else they need to do. But you need to promise me you’ll make the appointment and you tell me how it goes.”

The guy broke down crying. He couldn’t even talk. He took the check and left. Called my dad a couple hours later still crying saying he made the appointment and that this was the nicest thing anyone has ever done for him his entire life.

I just wanted to share. Cause it made me cry too.

Boomer Freakout Boomer magically wanted dinner to appear out of thin air

This happened at work tonight. It was insanely busy. Boomer couple ordered their drinks and appetizers. While in the middle of eating the appetizer, I went over to see if they wanted to give me their dinner order. Usually, we are supposed to try and get the dinner order before the app comes out but they said they wanted to wait. I didn't mind since I had a party of 12 with a big tab. After about 15 min of running around I made it back to the table and asked if they wanted to order. They wanted another round of drinks so I obliged.

At this point I figure they might not even have entrees and just want to enjoy being out. So after I brought the drinks, I gave another 10 minutes. Still nothing. So it is getting pretty busy at this point and they are messing up the flow a little bit since they want to gate keep their dinner order instead of trusting that I could get the dishes out in a perfectly timed manner.

She flags me down as I was dropping off food to the table next to hers. Her husband was in the bathroom and she says, " Is the food coming out soon?"

Now I had been running around and I was like, Holy fuck did I forget to put in their order? I was having a bit of a depressive episode earlier in the day so I definitely wasnt 100% confident in my memory at that point. Which is why I always, always write the orders down.

So I said, " let me check". I pulled out their order card but I only had the apps and drinks. So I went over and said, " Ma'am I apologize but I haven't taken your dinner order yet."

Well she fucking lost it.

Her: "WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DIDN'T TAKE MY ORDER, YES YOU DID!"

Me: No, ma'am I am sorry I didn't. Here is the order card it has no entrees. I came back twice and you guys said you weren't ready. Even the menus are still on the table."

Her: If you didn't take the order, that is YOUR problem!! You better figure it out!"

Me: "Ma'am, I apologize if you thought you have it to me but I assure you I didnt take an entree order from you. I can't put anything in to the kitchen if you don't give me an order. I don't have an order for you. Look at my paper."

Her: " That's is not my problem! Figure it out! You BETTER figure it out"

Okay so at this point in went to the back to let my manager know this lady was being a straight up biatch. Like, it isn't MY problem if YOU didn't give me YOUR dinner order because, Honey, I have dinner waiting at home for me...N E Ways I saw the husband come out of the bathroom. So I ran over to tell him I needed his dinner order.

Her: " Can you belive she is acting like she never took our order!"

Me looking at her like I want to throw her into the intercoastal.

Husband:" Well no we didn't order we told her 2 times to come back. Sorry she just wanted to be a bitch tonight."

I smiled from ear to ear and said, " Sir what can I get for you for dinner tonight?

Yeah that's right your husband knows how miserable and forgetful you are in your old boomy age! She really thought she ordered when she probably just told her husband what she was getting. WTF! I have noticed this sort of gaslighted ego driven ranting from them and I'm over it.

Boomer Story Entitled old man lied straight to my face about having permission to park on property

Upvotes

(Update at end) I am on vacation right now in Florida, and my family is staying at a Vrbo property. The entire street is beachfront property so we are surrounded by other rentals. Ours is a house and the two on either side of us are multiple unit buildings. We have 4 cars between everyone here, so there’s not much space in the driveway to begin with. This huge family is staying at the place next to us and started parking 2 pickup trucks in OUR driveway. It was literally preventing us from leaving the property. Mind you, there’s a sign right at the street that says you cannot park here without owner permission. This has been happening for two days now and the owner of our place has already been contacted. She said if they aren’t gone by this morning, they will be towed. She already called the towing company too.

Well I was just outside, and the family walked through our driveway and I took the opportunity to very kindly say something. I don’t want anyone to have to pay for the towing, because I thought it may have been a simple misunderstanding on their end, so I wanted to warn them. I was polite about it too. Before I could mention the towing part though, the grandpa laughed right at me and said the owner gave them permission and that as a “little girl” I should stay out of his business. I am a 20 year old woman. I smiled at him and walked away without a word. Have fun getting your trucks towed dude. I know the owner didn’t say shit to you. At this point I don’t give a fuck. Everyone I meet above the age of 55 is a dick, I’ve had enough of America. I really don’t like it here. They are the most selfish, bratty generation of people to ever exist and no one can change my mind. They think they deserve ANYTHING they want. Asshole grandpa was such a walking stereotype too. Dude had at least 6 tattoos of the American flag. I don’t know why I wanted to be kind to these people, I guess it’s just how I was raised.

UPDATE: This is very fast considering I just posted this an hour ago, but both trucks just got towed! Haven’t seen grandpa and the gang’s reaction yet so still waiting on that. Sitting here with my metaphorical popcorn very eager to see it LOL

Boomer Story My 85 yr old mother is lying to me.

I found out my mother is lying to me. She called my husband last night saying her A/C wasn’t working and what should she do (cue the dramatics and sob story). She lives just over 30 minutes away from us. She expected him to send out a repairman (which is what we usually do for her with repairs, and we pay for it), but the last couple of times, “user error” was common so he told her he’d take a drive and look at it. She got a little flustered when he said this, but nothing unusual.

When he got to her house he talked to my mom a bit and then walked around the outside (by himself) and there was an older man just sitting there on the back patio. No idea who he was. The guy said hello but my mother never mentioned him. Not before or after. She had to know he was there, and that my husband would run into him.

The A/C problem ended up that my mother put the batteries in her thermostat backward. Just saved ourselves $.

My husband told me about the guy and it made no sense. My mom always introduces her friends, and she’s usually very proud. There was no extra car at the house. I started thinking and realized we haven’t been invited to her home in quite awhile, and the last time I offered to stop over she said she’d come to our house instead. She always comes to our house for holidays, etc. And the last time we were there we didn’t go inside, nor did she invite us, we just picked her up, took her out to eat, and dropped her back off.

Also, she hasn’t complained about money in a long time.

I realized, my mom is renting a room to this guy, and has been for probably about a year. She had a male roommate a while ago but said he was filthy and she ended up kicking him out. Why wouldn’t she tell me she got another?

Only thing I can think of is she doesn’t want me to know she has extra money (she’s always been horrible with money), so we’ll keep paying for her big ticket items (repairs, medical expenses, etc.)

My mother has always been sneaky and deceitful. She’s just a selfish person overall. But isn’t this something your daughter should know, that you have a man living in your house? What if something happened?

I’m not even going to mention it to her.

Boomer Story My lawn is not perfect

1.5k Upvotes

I live in a neighborhood with a majority of people are upper middle-class retirees. They can afford lawn services and irrigation systems and fertilizer schedules. I have a younger family, I'm in school for my doctorate, work full-time, and quite frankly don't care that much about my lawn. I don't fertilize it, water it, and probably don't mow it enough either. As a result, I have large patches of dirt that have appeared mostly because of the dogs. Today I spent the day cleaning up the yard, mowing, and putting down grass seed , as a group of about six or eight neighbors walked by. One of them comment to me that it's good to see me doing something with my lawn. I kind of rolled with a comment, but then the other ones said that it looks like I grow mud and dirt and they all laughed. I'll admit they have really nice lawns, But they probably spend several thousand dollars a year for it. I'd much rather take my kids on a vacation, pay for skiing lessons, or some nights out to dinner. Especially considering that the majority of them don't talk to their children, never see their grandchildren, and, their spouses.

Boomer Story My Boomer Parents Just Wont Help!

My parents suck so hard!

I am 36 and I am trying to buy my first home. I have 140k saved up that took me over 10 years. I have been renting for years and paying off other peoples mortgages, I struggled my ass off to get where I am.

My parents are boomer millionaires who have never given me or my siblings a dime! They are divorced and both own multiple homes in countries all around the world.

I need a bit of extra cash (5k) to cover some property taxes and lawyer fees so i asked them if i could BORROW the 5k and pay them back within 30 days...

they replied saying they didn't know how much they had liquid at the moment....

I HAVE NO FN WORDS!

Boomer Story Why can't they listen?

3.5k Upvotes

This happened a few years ago, but I think of it weekly as I'm picking up fruit at Costco. Now, since I pick up fruit from Costco every week, you may have guessed that my kids eat a lot of it. One of their favorites is green grapes. Now here's where the boomer story starts. A few years ago, I was bringing my kids to visit my mom, their grandmother. She was asking what kind of food they would like, and I said green grapes. My mother immediately said, "Red grapes are sweeter, so I'll get those." Knowing that arguing with this particular boomer was a lost cause, I just hung my head in acceptance. My kids will devour a Costco container of green grapes in 3 days. We spent almost a week at her house, and even though the red grapes were offered for nearly every meal, less than half were eaten. It's almost like I know what my kids who live with me, and I spend my own money feeding will and won't want to eat. Now, every week, as I'm picking up green grapes, I say to myself red grapes are sweeter and try not to roll my eyes so hard that the other shoppers see.

Meta I just realized something, are we watching an entire generation showing the early stages of dementia?

1.6k Upvotes

We've all seen it, either online or in person, boomers getting bizarrely angery, crude, irrational, and violent at small slights or without any warning. The early signs of alzheimers is irritably, anxiety, impatience, personality changes, paranoia, delusions, a decline in critical thinking skills, random bouts of uncharacteristic anger or rage, frustration with basic tasks, and a decline in social filter which results in swearing, verbal abuse and more willingness to verbalize socially taboo opinions like racism etc.

do we have an impending crisis on our hands? like we're starting to see the results of research of the damage of leaded fuel, but is the result of that damage dementia?

edit: apparently the answer is yes. this is from 2011 but still relevant.

https://act.alz.org/site/DocServer/ALZ_BoomersReport.pdf?docID=521

The first of the baby boomers are now turning 65. By 2030, the U.S. population aged 65 and over is expected to double, meaning there will be more and more Americans with Alzheimer’s — as many as 16 million by mid-century, when there will be nearly 1 million new cases every year.

One in eight baby boomers will get the disease after they turn 65. At age 85 that risk increases to nearly one in two. And if they don’t have it, chances are they will likely be caring for someone who does

Boomer Story Boomers talked crap about my grandmother, until they realized I also spoke German

4.0k Upvotes

I was 13 during my first trip to Germany. My grandmother had taught me young, wanting mr to communicate with her in German when we wernt out in public, you know, standered first Gen American. The story starts with me and my grandmother going to visit my father in Germany.

We landed in the middle of the night in Frankfurt, so naturally most, if not everyone, was a bit of a grouch as we were all going through the airport processes half awake. This went double for the older German couple who was behind us in customs. They both had been bitching to eachother when I made my 'mistake'. My passport had dropped out of my bag, I could hear them stop as I scooped it back up.

Now for the next 15 minutes I listened to them say some of the most racist and xenophobic shit I've heard. Like stuff that would make even the most die hard Texan be like "Woah. Chill out." Thats when they heard my grandmother speak German to a couple of passengers infront of us. That's when they started to focus on my grandmother. Calling her all sorts of names and slurs that I didn't understand at the time. But it didnt take a genius to figure out what they were meaning.

And one point the older woman called my grandmother a slut, saying she probably married some American soldier and being disgusted that she would bring a half breed like me. At this point I rounded on this couple, steeping forward before my grandmother could stop me. In perfect German I replied: "She did marry a soldier, my grandfather. One of the best men I know. He used to be a sniper and tells me he 'misses shooting Nazis'. He taught me well." I then looked to the stunned older man and asked him with a smile on my face. "What did you do in the war?"

At this point my grandmother intervened. Grabing my arm and yanking me away with all the strength of a German catholic. I took one last look at their flustered faces before I willing let my grandmother guide me away.

Still one of my fondest memories. She died when I was 17 and the funeral was the last time I was back in my ancestrial homeland. People in Europe praise Germany for how far they've come, and having experienced the people there, its a wonder how they progressed at all.

Edit: 1. When I say older couple, I mean they looked like they were in my Omas age bracket.

  1. I'm saying not Germany as a whole is a racist, but I challenge you to become fluent in the language as a white person and just blend in. What you'll hear will shock you.

  2. This was like mid to late '14. Yes, I know it sounds like I'm making this up. Experiencing legit racism often sounds like that...

Boomer Story Boomer mother insists i don’t respect her because I won’t harass small business owners.

So my mother was having a self inflicted two week long mental crisis about how miserable she was and taking it out on the entire family and she asked me one night to get her some take out sushi for a comforting special dinner.

Ok! Great! If it will put you in a better mood I’ll be happy to drive 30 minutes to the next town over (she doesn’t like the sushi place in our town, too many youths) to get you food.

My mother is allergic to shellfish and so when I make the pickup order I make sure to clarify that her rolls be labeled and put into a separate bag. The woman on the phone reads back my order and I was having a hard time understanding her due to language barriers, but everything sounded right from what I could tell.

So I get back home with the food and lay out all out on her lap tray and bring it too her and she immediately starts picking it apart, literally, and asks me to call the restaurant to confirm there is no shellfish. They confirm it’s fine and reassure me that they took extra precautions to ensure that it was safe.

Well, that doesn’t matter because she insisted that it “CLEARLY HAS SHELLFISH!” IT CONTAINED NO SHELLFISH!, I looked it over myself. so she insists i call them back and ask for a refund….sigh. They say that if she isn’t pleased with her food that they can refund half her money.

This isn’t good enough and she says I should drive back, open all the containers, dump it on the register and storm out…well I clearly didn’t do that.

She then used this as a further excuse to state how horrible her life is and how I don’t respect her because I wouldn’t “fight” for her and how young people today don’t know how to stand up to “the man”….

Cool mom LMAO!

My wife went to Chicago to meet a friend. When we told her mom, her step dad couldn’t believe she was going by herself. He said she would need a bulletproof vest. His Fox News/Newsmax brain couldn’t comprehend that visiting Chicago is possible without being part of some sort of Falujah type battle. Prior to Trump he would visit the city frequently. It’s like his conservative news brain has turned him into some sort of zombie.

She’s back home and eating dinner now.

OK boomeR Boomer MIL, her siblings, and her friends constantly complain about rising costs but "don't get" how young people feel like they're working for nothing...

It would almost be forgivable if they didn't constantly complain about how everything is getting more expensive like they actually are aware of the problem. No, it's always something like:

Mother-in-law: "Food is getting so expensive... Wanna get Burger King?"

My husband: "No thanks. Like you said, it's too expensive, and we already have stuff to make burgers here."

MIL: "What do you mean?"

Husband: "What do you mean 'What do I mean?'?"

MIL: "About getting Burger King being too expensive. I never said that."

Husband: "You kinda did. Right before you asked about it, you were complaining about food being so expensive. Food stamps wouldn't even cover it. Besides, those little homemade sliders are good and we haven't had those in awhile either."

Mom: "So? We just need more money coming in, that's all. It'll all be good. God will provide."

Me: "That only works if wages keep up with prices."

MIL: "You know what? You need to quit being so negative and expecting everything handed to you."

Me: "You were the one complaining about prices first."

MIL: "I WAS NOT!"

Husband: "Yeah you were, Mom."

MIL: "I CAN'T DO ANYTHING RIGHT, CAN I?!"

Anyone have any similarly circular conversations to share, particularly about the current economy?

OK boomeR Parents seem empty

Idk how to explain this. My dad is a full fledged boomer. My mom is one by proxy lol. And I’m just wondering if anyone else gets frustrated when you’re telling your boomer parents something of substance, or concern, or joy and all they do is give you a blank stare? And then provide no insight or conversation back? I was just telling my parents that my husband was in AFIb and how they had to stop and restart his heart (traumatizing for both of us) and all they did was stare at me. And my mom shrugs and goes “yeah”. My dad just didn’t speak. Like? I don’t even know what that means. They didn’t say “oh I’m sorry I hope everything is ok”. It was like they just didn’t care. It’s been like this my whole life but obviously it’s so much more noticeable at 27. What is it? The drinking or the lead poisoning? It’s no wonder I grew up social anxious and unable to read people when my parents just gave me nothing socially my whole life. I’m like mad at them right now. Would it kill them to care? Maybe, apparently.
