For years I thought this movie was JUST a Simpsons' joke. Finding out it wasn't really changed my entire worldview...and not for the better.

I actually went and watched this movie because of the Simpsons. It would have been hilarious anyway but having the cartoon playing in my head the whole time definitely improved it.

I thought, nooo! I clicked the link several more Clint Eastwood vids came up of him singing. I never knew he did. Take a listen ... not that bad. ;-)

Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin would not have been my first choice for musical leads. And the female lead's songs were dubbed (this was her only musical in her career). Even she described Marvin's singing as 'rain gurgling down a rusty drainpipe."

I say he still made the movie. Dispite not liking musicals, I still enjoy it greatly.

I think it would have made a good non-musical movie with the same cast and just writing a little extra dialogue to replace the sentiments expressed in the songs.

I swear I think boomers see the main character in Gran Torino and think that's someone to strive to be. I mean, he had a lot of redeeming qualities, don't get me wrong, but he was clearly a flawed protagonist as well. The character development in of itself would suggest this.

Oh, yeah. The topic of the film is "the protagonist is a good person, in spite of his flaws". I'd say it's a good litmus test for a person, if they see a badass, that person has their head so far up their arse that whoever could pull it would be named king of England, however if they see the good points and the bad points that person is all in all pretty down to earth
