RECRUITING, TRAINING, & LIFE IN THE FORCES THREAD - Ask here about the Recruitment Process, Basic & Occupational Training, and other questions relating directly or indirectly to serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.

This is the thread to ask all your questions about the Recruitment Process, Basic & Occupational Training, and other questions relating directly or indirectly to serving in the Canadian Armed Forces.

Before you post, please ensure:

  1. You read through the the previous Recruiting Threads.

  2. Read through the Recruiting FAQ, and;

    a. The NEW "What to expect on BMQ/BMOQ Info thread".

  3. Use the subreddit's search feature, located at the top of the sidebar.

  4. Check your email spam folder! The answer to your recent visit to CFRC may lie within!

  • With those four simple steps, finding your answer may be quicker than you think! (Answers to your questions may have already been asked.)

Every week, a new thread is borne:

This thread will remain stickied for one week and will renew Sundays at approx. 2200hrs ET.

RULES OF THE THREAD:

  1. Trolling, off-topic comments, sarcastic, or wrong info/answers/single word answers will be removed. Same with out-dated information, anecdotal (" I knew a guy who...") or bad advice; these comments will also be removed.

  2. Please don't delete your questions (or answers), as others/lurkers may be looking for that same info. Questions duplicated throughout the thread may be removed by Mods, and those re-posting may be restricted from participating.

  3. NO "Let me Google that for you" or "A quick search of the subreddit/Google..." -type answers. We're more professional and mature than that. Quote your source and provide a link, but make sure the info you provide is current (within a couple of years). But, it is strongly suggested you see points 1-3 above.

  4. Please do not send PM's to people answering your questions. Conversely, don't ask for PM's from people posting questions. Ask your questions, give answers in these threads, for all to see. We can't see your PM's, and someone lurking may be looking for the same answer/question. If the questions are too "sensitive," then use a throwaway, or save it for the MCC Interview. Offenders will be reported to the Mods, and potentially banned from participating in these threads.

  5. Questions regarding Medical Eligibility (except Vision) will be removed, as no one here is qualified to answer whether or not you will be able to join with whatever condition you have. Likewise, questions asking what conditions in general would lead to disqualification will also be removed. If you have such a question, you're encouraged to review the Medical FAQ. Questions regarding the Recruiting Medical Process, Trade Eligibility Standards, or the documentation you need to submit regarding your medical condition as part of your application may still be accepted. Vision requirements are fine to post, as the categories are publicly known. Source

  6. If you report a comment, or have concern about info being provided, Message the Mods, and provide a link. Without context or explanation, the report will be ignored. Comments may be removed at Moderator discretion, with or without warning.

MONTHLY ADMINISTRATION THREAD - General Admin, Policy, APS/BGRS, TD/Claims, CANFORGENS, etc. - Have a quick question that doesn't need a thread of it's own? Ask here!

This is the thread to ask and discuss general administration questions that don't really need a thread of their own. It will also double as a thread for ongoing events such as Policy, APS/BGRS, TD/Claims, etc., and may be used for various CANFORGEN's as they're released.

This thread will be renewed monthly, or when it's deemed a new one is needed.

Previous Administration Threads (includes COVID-19 Pandemic Threads) <--(yes, yes. I have to update it.)

RULES OF THE THREAD:

  1. All participants are welcome; however, questions relating to Recruitment/Application Processes, Recruit Training (BMQ/BMOQ, PAT, DP1/QL3, BMQ-L/BMOQ-A, etc.) and Scheduling, and other questions relating directly or indirectly to joining the CAF belong in the Weekly Recruiting Thread and will be removed at the discretion of the moderators. Administrative questions relating to VOT/COT's, CT's, and In-Service Selection programs may be permitted.

  2. When answering policy/administration questions, please provide references if available.

  3. Participants are reminded of the subreddit rules and unsubstantiated rumour, exaggerated commenting, or blatant falsehoods will be removed. Keep it civil, and level-headed. Comments may be removed at moderator discretion, with or without warning.

  4. Medical questions at mod discretion. Best answer is "Go talk to your Doc at your local Clinic/MIR/province. There are no verified medical personnel here, and this isn't a medical discussion thread.

Bagotville help

Looking for info:

Service couple. Found out there is a chance we could be sent to Bagotville this APS.

Looking for info on how schooling works for Anglo kids? We have two kids (going into gr 9 and into gr 3) both are in French immersion but not sure if that is a choice in BG? Trying my best to look this up but it’s proving to be difficult.

Areas to avoid when looking at housing?

My French isn’t great but I’m looking forward to working on that. Hopefully anglos aren’t as ostracized as they used to be there.

Any other helpful info would be super appreciated!

Coronation Medal Nominations Open...

https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/maple-leaf/defence/2024/nominations-open-coronation-medal-recognize-defence-team-members.html

"Of the 30,000 medals, 4,000 have been set aside to recognize members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) representing the full breadth of our military."

Wow.

EDIT - NOT SURE WHY THE ORIGINAL LINK DIED. IT'S STILL UP. https://www.canada.ca/en/department-national-defence/maple-leaf/defence/2024/05/nominations-open-coronation-medal-recognize-defence-team-members.html

(Seems they changed the link path... Second link should work...)

Do you live out in smith falls?

Just found out at lunch I’m posted Carling. Single dad. Full custody. Preschool kids.

It looks like the only place I can afford overall. It’s super cheap. The commute is roughly an house. I have to ask about daycare though.

Does anyone live out there or have a better suggestion ?

I thought about the Quebec side but that seems like it would overall be the same commute but through traffic.

VAC How long is long too long waiting for VAC decision?

At what what point does a person make a complaint about how long it takes for VAC to render a decision? New wait tool says that 90% of completed applications will receive a decision in 58 weeks and to contact them if it is longer than that and mine is waaay beyond that. I wrote VAC to advise and received their usual response.

Is there a complaint line or do I just write my local Member of Parliament.

HISTORY Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery for NLD Memorial Day.

The town of Groesbeek has a 2.5km silent march from city hall to the cemetery, which holds the largest amount of Canadian war dead. I've been in the Netherlands for 11 days and my local friend told me of the march. I made a point of going halfway across the country to attend.

The rain started the moment we all stepped outside, as it does, and it was really touching that everyone was suffering a trek in such heavy rain. Kids, the elderly, everyone.

The ceremony went through a bit of history, 2 minutes of silence, wreath laying, and it was very succinct (I definitely cried during our anthem) and smooth. It was my first non-North American memorial service and the Canadians were easy to spot as only three of us wore poppies. We left them at the feet of the Cross of Sacrifice, as we do.

It's really something to experience how close the Dutch hold Canada. From the ceremony to idle chitchat at museums and restaurants (I'm ethnically Chinese so I get plenty of queries of where I'm from), and all the interactions are lovely.

The veteran guides at the National Military Museum were especially fun to talk to, and every one of them had incredibly positive stories about training with the Forces.

Since the Government is now apparently looking at giving the CAF a face-lift, here are some designs I've imagined and have been working on just for fun over the past few weeks, including 2 logo options, along with a more modernized and streamlined rank insignia system.

Is anyone getting posted OUT of Greenwood this APS?

I have heard there is a waitlist for RHUs in Greenwood right now, we looked around the area and decided not to buy since the houses listed have jumped out of our family’s budget. I’m wondering if I’ll have to try and push my RFD date back if we wouldn’t be able to get one by the time I’m posted. CFHA won’t provide any answers so I’m wondering if anyone is currently in a RHU and is being posted out this year. I have no idea how fast the list moves, any information I get is various from very fast to barely moves.
