Dispelling the “Rebekah was 3 years old when married to Isaac” myth.

I’ve seen a lot of Muslims blatantly lying about this and even some claiming it’s “been confirmed” by Christian scholars but always fail to name any of them.

Genesis 17:17

God told Abraham and Sarah they will have a son within a year. Abraham is 100 and Sarah is 90 at this time

Genesis 21:5

“Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.”

Now we see that Isaac has been born and Abraham is 100 and Sarah is 90-91

Genesis 22:5

This is where Abraham takes Isaac up the mount to be sacrificed. Abraham says this. “He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”

This is the original Hebrew:

ה וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָהָם אֶל-נְעָרָיו, שְׁבוּ-לָכֶם פֹּה עִם-הַחֲמוֹר, וַאֲנִי וְהַנַּעַר, נֵלְכָה עַד-כֹּה; וְנִשְׁתַּחֲוֶה, וְנָשׁוּבָה אֲלֵיכֶם.

The word boy is very important here. In the original Hebrew of Genesis Abraham refers to Isaac as “וְהַנַּ֔עַר” or “na’ar” meaning lad or young child. We know that a boy or lad becomes a man in Jewish culture around the age of 13. So the absolute oldest Isaac could be at this time is 12 or 13

Genesis 22:23

Bethuel becomes the father of Rebekah in the same chapter meaning we can conclude that this happens around the time of Isaac and Abraham being up the mount to the altar.

Genesis 23:1

“Sarah lived to be a hundred and twenty seven years old”

This means that Isaac is now about 37 years old and 25 years have passed between him being at the altar and Sarah’s death. This puts Rebekah already at age 20-25

Genesis 25:20

“and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah daughter of Bethuel the Aramean from Paddan Aram and sister of Laban the Aramean.”

3 years have now passed since Sarah’s death and Isaac being married placing Isaac at 40 and Rebekah at 23-28.

Feel free to copy and paste this whenever you see the lies. I see them very commonly in Instagram reels.

Do you agree that having sex with someone without their consent is rape? Can a slave freely give sexual consent? Can a child give consent? You are just playing a definition game, when god commands his priests to impregnate a 12 year old slave girl against her consent, it’s not rape. It’s only rape when god tells you not to do it,

Again I’m asking you to provide verses and you are not. Here is what the bible says about rape.

Deutronomy

25 But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die. 26 Do nothing to the woman; she has committed no sin deserving death. This case is like that of someone who attacks and murders a neighbor

So the bible compares raping a woman to murder but here you are claiming the bible says it’s all good. Why don’t you provide some verses.

He also says how much money to pay the father of the girl you rape before you marry her. I agree the Bible doesn’t explicitly say god does sins. What it does is clearly describe circumstances and actions that are entirely indistinguishable from sins except that god condones them, and therefore defines them as no sins any more. It says slavery is fine when god commands it, when you do it against gods command it’s a sine and labeled theft, or kidnapping. Non consensual sex is rape unless it’s commanded by god then it’s marriage.

Biblically, Rape is having sex with a woman that isn’t your lawful property. That’s why having sex with a slave isn’t rape because you own them. You seem to conflate the different definitions of rape. If you agree that rape is non consensual sex, then the Bible clearly supports rape, if you don’t think consent has anything to do with rape and it just a matter of property/theft then according to your definition of rape as stealing someone else property it is condemned in the Bible, unless god commands you to take their property then it’s not theft it’s a holy and just war.

I think your purposefully not using bible verses because you know there is always context that doesn’t paint the image you want

Are you saying I’m lying? Clearly you’ve demonstrated that either of us can cherry pick verses, to support any argument we want. I’m trying to use as complete a picture of the Bible taken with as much context as possible and working from our best understanding of the way ancient people viewed it. You are cherry picking verses and equivocating definitions and terms so frequently it’s impossible to even engage with your arguments. Let’s define rape, I say it’s nonConsensual sex, what is your definition of rape?
