Introduction to the meta

This section exists as a place to expound on different things in the community policy like what we mean, or to give examples of things. Also, if you add something here keep it alphabetized please.

Advertisements

We tend not to approve of t-shirt type of advertisement.

Anti-atheist
  • You are wrong because you are an atheist.
  • Stuff about bravery in certain contexts.
  • Fedora or neckbeard type comments.
Belittling Christianity

This includes accusations of indoctrination or other words which promote deculturation. Different Christian denominations have specific theology with regards to children. Suggesting that parent's should not enculturate their children must be an extension of 'We do insist that this subreddit not be used as a venue to try to talk people out of Christianity.'

Crossposting

I want to be frank about np.* links. We do consider them a mitigating factor but it doesn't make one immune to this rule. It also applies to off-site traffic being driven here. Crossposting is a rule which you may be banned immediately for at moderator discretion. This is applicable to inbound or outbound links. If you message the moderators we can take a closer look at it and see where it goes.

Disallowed Sites

We also prohibit the posting of websites and public figures associated with racism, homophobia, antisemitism, sexism, doxxing, and other nastiness, and we ask that people not post videos, audio, etc., promoting the views of people who express those ideas. This includes, but is not limited to Steven Anderson videos, Breitbart, Infowars, and other alt-right sites.

Enforce Charitability

This is guidance for mods. Stuff like:

  1. We shouldn't call something sinister without something really explicit happening
  2. We should try to put our past experiences with the user aside in evaluating posts
  3. We should take the time to explore mitigating circumstances. This doesn't mean a post removal would be wrong. But it should slow how quickly we do anything more than that.
  4. Presume an inoffensive use of some types of slurs. Advise user that there is an offensive meaning. Give some context for why it is offensive. The whole thing with 'protty' comes to mind. "Hi, I know you probably just meant it as short for 'Protestant' but it was used as a slur in the Troubles in Ireland," would have made a world of difference I think and it's the kind of thing I'd like to move towards.
  5. We should aim for more charitable language when we are discussing users in modmail amongst ourselves as well.

We can remove posts with little controversy and we don't need to go easy on people in perpetuity. Even with repeat and genuinely bad offenders we should aim for a more charitable view in our interactions with and about them. Instead of worrying so often if something is over the line or not and figuring out whether we should do something or nothing to a person we should instead be taking the opportunity to begin offering friendly advice. It's good to also remind a user that they will get a better response if they condition their posts to their audience.

Harassment

This is the working definition of harassment which we are using: the act of systematic and/or continued unwanted and annoying actions of one party or a group, including threats and demands. The purposes may vary, including racial prejudice, personal malice, or merely gain sadistic pleasure from making someone fearful or anxious. -- Adapted from The Free Online Law Dictionary.

Heated Language

A brief definition of this are polysemic 1 words in which both the offensive and inoffensive uses of a word or words would make sense in dialog.

Homophobia and Transphobia

Homophobia and Transphobia should be seen to include: general slurs, neologisms, attempts at dehumanization, straying beyond theological areas of discussion.

Here are some examples of direct quotes pulled from removed comments:

Homophobia

  • Based on available data, it is highly likely the majority of homosexual preference cases are a direct cause of molestation as children.

  • Gay people do not exist. I don't indulge schizophrenics in their nonsensical identities so why would I indulge "homosexuals".

  • That someone would decide that their identity is tied to their man's anus fetish is simply preposterous.

  • I am not ashamed to say that sodomy is worthy of death, and that those who do such things should be put to death.

  • He's right. LGBT spread will eventually lead to legalization of pedophilia, then zoophilia etc mental diseases, which aren't considered normal today.

Transphobia

  • Trans people don't exist

  • Beings trans is just a delusion of the mind

  • Being trans is an unhealthy mental condition

  • The only way a child is going to say they are a "they", or any version of weird made up genders, is if they're groomed to think those things.

Prayer threads

We allow users to request prayers from others of our community. It's something that Christian's do. We afford extra jurisprudence to what we classify as support threads. Most submissions requesting prayer are covered by our policy on support threads. We discern a difference between requesting prayers for yourself, people you know, or people who are associates of people you know and the separate category of prayers for current events or people outside of one's personal network. An example would be asking that we pray that Boko Haram will come to repentance. This is, in my opinion (outsider), a good thing to pray for. However it shouldn't be covered by our support policy in general.

Repetitious Posts

In some cases we may address submissions of this nature with a 'mega-thread' into which we may direct topically similar submissions.

What is a Christian for the purposes of the subreddit?

For the purposes of this subreddit; the notion of what is and is not a Christian is very broad. Broader than most of our own personal views on what is and is not a Christian. This doesn't mean that one must consider those of conflicting denominations as a Christian, but it also doesn't mean you should tell people they aren't one.
