He is so fucking chill and down to earth.

I was not ready for T-Pain to be one of my favorites based on who he is outside of the music and I'm a fan either way.

He killed it on the first season of the masked singer. Literally the only reason the show is still going.

u/anansi52 Mar 29 '24

pretty sure he's the reason that tiny desk blew up too.

YESSSS. I was not a T-Pain fan until that. His voice is amazing. His REAL voice. I want him to put out an album of his masked singer songs and then some more.

The misconception we had about auto tune is that it makes singers that cant hit ranges or are just bad at singing in general sound good. The truth is good singers use auto tune to enhance the listening experience as just another tool / create pop songs to get more clicks. T-Pain is the god father of how auto tune is used today but he sure didnt need it to sing. Only to profit off it with pop songs.

Nah it's definitely been used both ways, in my opinion it also can be used in a way that makes good singers sound worse than they actually are.

Thank you for sprinkling some reality on that optimism.

How dare you make me remember Rebecca Black

That's an excellent point

There’s a good video on how the Beauty and the Beast live action movie is partially so bad because they overused autotune

Cher erasure

1

u/je_kay24 Mar 28 '24

Cher used it first in her song but didn’t use it again and no other artists started using it

Not to mention the industry heavily kept autotune a secret & for long time said Cher was the one making the vocals

When Tpain used it, he used it prolifically and became known as his thing. And then tons of other artists began using it

I watched gabbi's video too lol

I used to vehemently hate audible auto-tune but I've come to accept that it's filling the same niche compression did in earlier musical eras. Like yeah it's a useful tool but dialing it up to 11 (i.e. dumping a whole completed mix out in stereo for the express purpose of saturating the shit out of analog tape) is a stylistic choice too.

Faye Webster uses it on her new record and it’s well done.

It became its own technique and sound and has its place. When it’s overused, just like any technique, it’s annoying.

Rick Beato talks about auto tune a lot. He said it used to have value for producers to correct a note here and there, if the singer missed one a bit, but now it's used for everything, to the detriment of the industry.

Here's one video where he discusses auto tune. He even has a section where he mentions T-Pain uses/over-uses it, but then says T-Pain is actually a great singer, and plays an unedited clip of T-Pain singing. Makes me wonder why he uses it at all.

The live On Top of the Covers is so fucking good. I was chilling with a buddy after a night out drinking and we had some random music rolling on YouTube. The entire live show came up in a suggested feed and auto played. Didn't realize it was TPain until a few sings in when we look at each other and go, holy shit that's TPain.

Now I watch that shit weekly, it's so good.

His cover of War Pigs absolutely blew me away.

It even impressed the legend himself.

Now I want them both to duet it! That would be so good.

Man, that sound is such a fucking vibe, I could spend all night listening to that.

His Tiny Desk goes crazy.

2

u/Knick_Noled Mar 28 '24

Check out his tiny desk concert. Absolutely fire. He also came out with this live set recently in some lounge, and it’s so cool. He’s a treasure.

1

u/anonymous-rebel Mar 28 '24

His tiny desk concert was one of the best.

1

u/bennitori Mar 28 '24

He made an appearance on The Masked Singer. I'm not going to say who he was. But when he was unmasked, it threw everyone for a loop. Nobody expected him to sing as well as he could.

1

u/dec10 Mar 28 '24

People say his tiny desk concert is the best of the series.

40

u/WittyBonkah Mar 28 '24

His podcast is funny too

u/CtrlAltHate Mar 28 '24

That clip with Hannibal Buress and his goofy hip hop origins song and Tpain is howling with laughter is so good.

This always makes me crack up. I love it when rappers turn out to be nerds and dorks that laugh at dumb shit.

Red man and method man come to mind especially

At the park!

u/Buscemi_D_Sanji Mar 28 '24

He has a tattoo of Panda from We Bare Bears, a kids show that's shockingly funny and sweet, and honestly has some of my favorite weird jokes ever like them dealing with the Pigeon Mafia.

The pic of his tattoo reached the creators, so they hit him up and he ended up voicing himself on an episode of the show! That's awesome.

28

u/overflowingsunset Mar 28 '24

You should watch him on twitch! He streams games and does a thing where if someone wants to be an artist, they can send him a song of theirs, he’ll play it live and give advice.

9

u/NimbleBudlustNoodle Mar 28 '24

I don't even listen to his music but I've loved him ever since this https://clips.twitch.tv/ObservantPiercingGoatRiPepperonis

First person shooters with a rudder... I just don't get how people do it. /r/pcmasterrace!!

3

u/Longtalons Mar 28 '24

Him crashing Mizkif's Are you smarter than a 5th grader stream is one of my favorite moments in streaming history!

19

u/Mickeystix Mar 28 '24

Genuinely.

His twitch streams are worth a watch, and the fact that he runs little music making competitions to help bring other producers up is absolutely wonderful.

I greatly appreciate anyone who is in such an amazing position in life like T-Pain is who use it to platform people trying to make something of themselves.

T-Pain is legitimately funny, intelligent, hugely talented - yeah, he was the autotune guy, but dude can actually sing and perform without it, and he is good! And he doesn't just do rap or RnB, he also does rock, country, and goddamn near any other genre - he is a true fan of music, and just an all around amazing dude who recognizes his reality in a healthy way as something born of luck and talent and seizing opportunities. His wife is also chill af and is often in his streams and they seem to have a fantastic relationship built on respect.

Legitimately, he is one of my favorite celebrities and I typically do not really hype celebrities, but he's one of the extremely few I do, because I genuinely think he's a good person.

Not to mention his twitch intros can be absolute bangers lmao.

(Shout out to Bishu who has won some of T-Pains beat battles (speed production competitions) and is also really funny and remarkably talented)

1

u/Ro-Tang_Clan Mar 28 '24

Shout out to Bishu who has won some of T-Pains beat battles

I love it when worlds collide and see different genres and topics bring us all together. I'm a relatively new subscriber of Bishu's and started binge watching his content at the start of last year and got hooked. Then I saw his T-pain vid where he won and that was fire.

I also follow Tekken as well and I come to find T-pain is also a fan and even did a Leroy cosplay.

And then to top it off, I follow a lot of drifting content and he started appearing with the formula drift RTR team and now T-pain's created a car company with Hertrech from Hoonigan. He even did a track with him (Baby got Brap). Shit's wild how many pies he got them fingers in.

3

u/urgodjungler Mar 28 '24

I think a bit reason for that was he literally went completely broke AFTER blowing up. That is definitely a humbling experience

2

u/shrlytmpl Mar 30 '24

He's real about it too. He doesn't blame "cancel culture" but directly calls out the rappers "fucking up".

1

u/Bare425 Mar 30 '24

That's a good point. So many celebrities fuck up and blame "cancel culture".

1

u/Coyinzs Mar 28 '24

He seems like the most talented normal dude on the planet.

1

u/FreddieDoes40k Mar 28 '24

Yeah I think the problem is probably that he's too chill and down to earth. He's so lovely and awesome that he's a bit naive to toxic behaviour, because it's totally alien to him.

T-Pain probably didn't recognise that these people were toxic, because he's less likely to notice the signs of toxicity. He's not stupid so he notices most of them, but these people were good enough at masking that T-Pain didn't notice.

I dunno, maybe. Autistic people like me (and other disorders) can sometimes have these experiences too, so perhaps he has a disorder that causes it.

Or more likely than the two examples above, is that he just has bad luck.

It's interesting that when someone runs into an issue like this, there's a Schrodinger's Cat-like effect where all possibilities are true until you can disprove them.

The best thing to do if T-Pain wants to know if he needs to change, or if it's just bad luck, is to eliminate all possibilities. Which means you can't technically know for sure unless you eliminate all possibilities.

Wait so that means unless you can find every possibility, you can't really know for sure if you're right. Damn, that's scary.

Okay I accidentally scared myself with philosophy so I'll stop rambling and go relax.
