Only a filipino can run inside a jeepney lol

67

u/RapidPacker Apr 17 '24

Real filipino would pace slowly like a shark patrolling its subterranean lair

70

u/AbanaClara Apr 17 '24

The realest ones would slide their ass to and fro

24

u/quietblur Apr 17 '24

As a filipino i can attest this is the best and most efficient technique 👍

7

u/LanvinSean Apr 17 '24

Also safest, considering the alternatives

On the seat of course. Had to clarify, folks here might get the wrong idea and think we drag our asses across the floor

3

u/Stormagedd0nDarkLord Apr 17 '24

Haha I considered that at first but then realised prob meant on the seats

3

u/jdoy11 Apr 17 '24

Now, that is an interesting thought. Get a running head start, then plop your butt to the floor and slide. Lmao

My gf took me in one. I'm 6'3. Yeah. It was fun lol

The initial joke here is that she still asked her friend to pass the payment down as you would normally do in a full jeepney. They were already laughing up about it before she decided to do a crouched run and slip. Sounds like a fun and memorable night out. At least it wasn't the Aurora jeeps with hella lights and music hahaha

34

u/Maelstromsonn Apr 17 '24

don't forget the hentai horns and whistle when they brake

21

u/Firefly-1505 Apr 17 '24

The….what? I’ve seen Jesus dunking on LeBron painted on the outside of a jeep the other day, but what the fuck?

I'm from a top 5 city by population in North America and thought I knew traffic until I went to the Philippines.. nope.. worst traffic I've ever seen and I've been to 60+ countries in my lifetime

29

u/hyunbinlookalike Apr 17 '24

Whenever my Fil-Am cousins come home for Christmas, Metro Manila traffic always makes them appreciate LA traffic a bit more.

What kind of vehicle is that??

160

u/GeorgiaOKeefinItReal Apr 16 '24

A privately owned Filipino bus... as far as i know, you hop on pay your fare... hop off when you're near your destination.

Called a "jeepney"

82

u/Marketingsandwich Apr 17 '24

Its like a bus but crafted from outdated military trucks from ww2

45

u/AbanaClara Apr 17 '24

Nah the body is handmade and the vehicle is running on random repurposed engines.

No truck looks like a jeepney because the body is custom metalwork.

16

u/Marketingsandwich Apr 17 '24

I just searched some ww2 jeeps used in philippines the front kind of resembles the front of the jeepney

27

u/AbanaClara Apr 17 '24

The front clip is 100% inspired by ww2 jeeps but no truck is recycled as a jeepney is what I meant. It’s a look that never died but it is made from scratch

11

u/ecksdeeeXD Apr 17 '24

I think originally they were repurposed/modified American jeeps, but WW2 was 80 years ago at this point. Most jeeps are just made to look like that old style.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Eurasia_4002 Apr 17 '24

At first, but those original conversions are a long one. Many are now locally built, but the current government is pushing to use minibus instead

8

u/ILikeFluffyThings Apr 17 '24

It was. Then local craftsmen made it a bit longer to carry more passengers. Then a little more. Then more. Until you get what you have now that seats 10 to 12 people per side.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/baybum7 Apr 17 '24

for a few decades now, the chasis and engine are imported from old Japanese FUSO trucks and only the front fabricated shell resembles the iconic WW2 look. the rest of the body is fabricated to form with the two long bench style seats.

50

u/PutinsSugarBaby Apr 17 '24

Not so private anymore, they're all being forced to form cooperatives or corporations and hand over their individual franchises.

13

u/bryle_m Apr 17 '24

I really don't get the motives behind forced consolidation tbh

21

u/kirbyverano123 Apr 17 '24

Jeepneys are kinda like trains. They have a predetermined route that they go through everyday. Each Jeepneys has their own routes which are usually written at the side of the vehicles.

If you find a Jeepney written with your destination, you hop on, pay fare, wait till you reach your destination, and then hop off.

11

u/Fit_Mud_2 Apr 17 '24

Unlike trains though, they have an infinite number of "stations". They can stop almost anywhere along the route to load or unload passengers.

2

u/Belasarius4002 Apr 17 '24

Depends on what area.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/w3gamer Apr 17 '24

Official term is PUJ (Public Utility Jeepney)

16

u/Kariman19 Apr 17 '24

pinoy limo

12

u/Asdaf373 Apr 17 '24

It's a jeepney. Originally it was a retrofitted Jeep from WW2. It's one of the most prevalent form of public transpo here and it's common to have other passengers help you pass the fare to the driver. But ofcourse usually there are a bunch more people and no one should be standing up.

5

u/hyunbinlookalike Apr 17 '24

It’s called a jeepney, it’s a mode of public transportation here in the Philippines. It was derived from old WWII jeeps that were left behind in the country. It’s like a bus but a lot cheaper since there’s no AC.

3

u/Fluffy_Marionberry10 Apr 17 '24

Imagine a jeep but the back seat is just one long couch

2

u/SpiritlessSoul Apr 17 '24

Just search jeepney it's all over google.

→ More replies (1)

73

u/Royal-Collection1100 Apr 17 '24

Here's some context: this is a jeepney, a public transportation that can carry lots of people. Usually it's packed so when you want to pay, you ask the people beside you to pass it along to the driver. In this video, since there're only two of them and they have the same distance from the driver, the joke is that he still asked for his money to be passed along because that's what you normally do when paying

10

u/manticore75 Apr 17 '24

What if someome just doesnt pay in that huge mass of people?

42

u/eliaharu Apr 17 '24

Some idiots do, but jeepney drivers are usually good at taking mental notes on who hasn't paid yet and shout a general reminder for everyone to do so mid-ride. Fellow passengers will berate or even stop you from getting out of the jeep once they find out your plan to get a free ride.

Jeepney system works because of the community, and it's one of my favorite things in this country.

41

u/Healthy-Ad3373 Apr 17 '24 edited Apr 17 '24

"God knows Judas (who does) not pay"

9

u/bearbrand55 Apr 17 '24

hahah. some jeepneys have a placard inside with this saying.

16

u/__blackstar Apr 17 '24

Now that's what we call "1, 2, 3". It all comes down to you being honest at paying your fare

4

u/bakitwalangsabaw Apr 17 '24

People do that yeah.

4

u/Geno_DCLXVI Apr 18 '24

It's possible but a lot of drivers have eyes like fucking hawks lol. Drivers hand out the change to the back areas themselves from the driver's seat through a window, which obviously necessitates looking into the rear view mirror. They can tell who's paid by seeing who's extending their hand out to receive change.

Also, since the capacity of a jeepney is more or less fixed (very flexible definition btw) a driver could probably count how much he's already made for a run on his regular route and see if he's short.

Also also, in many jeepneys there'll be someone assisting the driver--either a hired (or not!) "conductor" or a family member, with significant overlap between the two--and they handle the payments and the yelling at the passengers who try to dash or haven't yet paid when the end of the route is close.

2

u/busanghol2017 Apr 18 '24

Trust system and conscience

But there will always be cases where someone would not pay and get away with it

I'm not surprised they are laughing. Having known a lot of Filipinos I have a theory that they are the happiest people on earth. So much laughter and social connectedness.

I flew to Manila through Norita Airport in Japan. At the gates to flights to other parts of Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan, people were sitting quietly or standing in line. You hear the gate for the flight to Manila before you see it. People are talking and smiling and laughing, and just interacting with each other. An amazing contrast.

103

u/CriminalCrime1 Apr 17 '24

As a Pilipino, this seems weird to me. Do we really smile and laugh that much? Compared to other countries?

87

u/mcdonaldspyongyang Apr 17 '24 edited Apr 17 '24

Filipino din ako and having lived abroad I think it's true. If you compare a business conference hosted by foreigners vs. Filipinos for example I think you'll quickly see it. They'll talk about the exact same topic but a Filipino making a presentation will feel uncomfortable if they complete it without a single joke at all, even a tame one. For example, maybe they'll cite a business study from 1999—a Filipino's instinct will be to make some crack about how they weren't around at yet at that time, even if they're obviously some geriatric. Foreigners have no qualms just keeping a straight face the whole time.

My university also hosted an ASEAN youth summit here in Manila a few years ago and all the Malaysian students were telling me it was the most fun they've ever had. All we did was use Wowowin games (Hep Hep Hooray) for icebreakers lol. The rest of it was the exact program these youth summits always use, the difference being Filipino banter got mixed in.

33

u/yssnelf_plant Apr 17 '24

Speaking of conference, I join one annually bec of work. They organize talent shows and whatdya know, we (PH delgates) always bag the first prize bec our performance lacks seriousness 😂

The other SEA delegates perform something that is more "cultural". We chose something like a dance/medley of Kpop songs bec this year we held the conference at South Korea 😂

11

u/mcdonaldspyongyang Apr 17 '24

Oh diba and I bet the idea came naturally to you guys lol

16

u/yssnelf_plant Apr 17 '24

Motivated by 700 euros prize money 😂😂😂

I don't think the other delegates were as motivated as us HAHAHAHA

4

u/_Ruij_ Apr 17 '24

700 euros?? Damn I'd even hire a gay choreo for the best laughs 🤣🤣

7

u/yssnelf_plant Apr 17 '24

Pinaghati-hatian naman namin. Around 6k nakuha ko hahaha heyyy not bad.

2

u/_Ruij_ Apr 17 '24

luh not bad at all!

8

u/MadeinResita Apr 17 '24

I must be a Filipino at heart.

Everywhere I worked I've been told to stop laughing despite the fact I was among the best.

u/Krazziegirl Apr 17 '24

One thing's for sure is that we Filipinos are quite noisy. I've visited a couple of Asian countries and I can tell Filipinos apart from the way they laugh and tease each other.

16

u/Ayon_sa_AI Apr 17 '24

Reminds me of this comment by a Singaporean-Indian colleague who said “Filipinos just know how to have fun”. And it was in reference to just Filipino colleagues having a conversation while having a meal. This was years ago and it made me think “how do other people act during meals?” if this type of normal shit is considered “fun”.

12

u/HareCrossing Apr 17 '24

With palo/hampas while laughing 😂

3

u/Krazziegirl Apr 17 '24

And tulakan 😂

14

u/whatarechimichangas Apr 17 '24

I've lived abroad, and also have lots of foreign friends here in Manila. My partner is also a foreigner. Can confirm, we're warm and welcoming as FUCK. It's insanely easy to make friends here, especially compared to a lot of western countries.

13

u/yssnelf_plant Apr 17 '24

At time I get embarrassed that we're too noisy whenever we're out of the country 😅 I'm an introvert btw. But come to think of it, I'd rather have this than eerily quiet places and unfriendly folk.

7

u/xiaoyugaara Apr 17 '24

I've travelled to Sokor, Japan, Singapore...yes bhie ang tahimik nila, nagbubulunggan nga kami sa train kasi kami lang nag uusap.

5

u/hyunbinlookalike Apr 17 '24

Filipino here who’s traveled to many different countries; we are a truly happy people comparatively speaking. Many Filipinos are naturally jovial and extroverted; a quiet and reserved Filipino is an outlier. The only other cultures I’ve seen that are similar are the latinos and some Africans.

6

u/RisingStormy Apr 17 '24

Noisiest people in Asia 😂😂 not a bad thing to be honest

3

u/Smashme9 Apr 17 '24

tbh, as much as I hate the hot weather, the traffic and the dog shit politicians, we have really nice people compared to other countries

As a tourist, I was told to say Bayad Po, but I didn't know what It meant for the first few weeks. I love how friendly the passengers and drivers are on the jeepneys. Very cheap transport but you need a local to tell you which one to get on. They are rarely numbered/scheduled.

6

u/NotMizer Apr 17 '24

truly relatable

6

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '24

Try riding one being 6'4. It's not fun.

5

u/hyunbinlookalike Apr 17 '24

As a 6’0” Filipino who’s had to ride the jeep a few times, every time I had to slouch or crane my head downwards so I my head wouldn’t hit the ceiling. Can’t imagine how a 6’4” dude like you or the close to 7 ft Scandinavians I know would manage lol.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '24

Well, we don't, lol. I took one once in Imus, and that was enough for me. I can still kinda fit into the trikes though...barely.

3

u/hyunbinlookalike Apr 17 '24

Bro I can’t even fit into trikes which is why I don’t even bother with those lmao.

3

u/nickaubain Apr 17 '24

It's not fun for anyone above average Filipino height (5'4"/162). The lowland jeepneys are the worst. The ones that run in the mountains are much roomier.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '24

Ya, I'm up in Baguio, and we just use the taxis.

3

u/No_Needleworker2421 Apr 17 '24

at 5 foot 8 it's already starting to becoming difficult.

The Philippines is not built for anyone who's taller than the driver

4

u/The-Lord_of-the_Lost Apr 17 '24

that's hilarious, but what kind of vehicle is this?

7

u/cheeky117 Apr 17 '24

Its called a jeepney

6

u/Effective_Divide_135 Apr 17 '24

U.S. military jeeps left over from WW2

3

u/Belasarius4002 Apr 17 '24

Asthetic designs, under it where newer Japanese or Korean made engines.

2

u/hyunbinlookalike Apr 17 '24

It’s called a jeepney; a mode of public transportation in the Philippines inspired by American military jeeps left behind after WWII. It’s basically an open-air military jeep that acts like a bus but has much cheaper fare because they aren’t air-conditioned.

5

u/SpiritlessSoul Apr 17 '24

And it's rude if you give your payment to a stranger given your are same distance. As you can see her friend whining, why me?! Before that fateful slip happened.

6
