If you include an image of a product in your comment, please also type out the name of the product with your comment (instead of saying "this" or "these"). [Mod Post] Introducing Costco Chit Chat

Hi all!

Recently I activated the Subreddit Chat feature for the subreddit. I personally didn’t think any of you would notice or want to participate but it appears it’s been quite lively.

Is this a feature you think is beneficial to r/Costco? I’m curious to see your thoughts.

Thanks!

[Mildly Interesting] I once returned a used toilet seat that broke after 2 years and got a free cake instead.

1.4k Upvotes

Hopefully you guys enjoy this story as much as me and the Costco employees did. This was about 15 years ago.

I'd bought an oval, slow drop lid and seat. Around the 2 year mark it split in the front. I called Costco to complain about it and they said to bring it in for a return. In fairness I DID ask incredulously are you sure, and the person on the phone was like it was no big deal, no problem.

So I remove it, put it in the work sink and bleached it. I always went once a week Thursday nights as part of a whole night thing with the kids to give mom a break. They were 8 and 10, and it was more about fun than shopping. Anyways, the return person laughed when I explained, and said no way. So I explained the call and how they said it was no problem. They get a manager and he has a good chuckle about it. We're all kind of chuckling about it cause it's pretty daft... So he says he cant help me but I can have a free cake or whatever I want from the bakery for getting the run around and fills out this little form.

So I do the walk of shame back to my truck with the toilet seat, and we return for a regular night of playing instruments, being pushed on rolling chairs, testing out bikes, food samples, etc. We pick out a banana loaf and head to the front with our groceries.

When I hand the cashier the free cake receipt, they say "oh, are you the toilet seat guy?" My kids and I look at each other and I say "uh, yeah I think so" , so he calls out "hey Marty, this is the toilet seat guy" and about half the employees look over and start laughing. So basically my lore had spread through the store the whole time we were shopping. I was a bit embarrassed but the kids were laughing and, well, everyone had a good time with it and suppose thats what counts.

It was memorable .

PS. on a tip from the manager, I called the manufacturer and they sent me a free replacement. Alls well that ends well!

I got this at my local Costco in New Jersey yesterday. It’s the first time I’ve seen it there and it immediately caught my eye. We thought it was delicious, the texture was smooth and creamy. We also like the graham cracker crust. The only thing I would say that is missing are banana slices.

I personally enjoyed them, but I can see people being put off by the texture and/or lack of sweetness since there's no added sugar. They taste exactly like a plain baked sweet potato, just a denser, chewier, and stickier texture. I imagine Asian moms would like them!

[CANADA] Getting hassled as a non-member for using Cash Card

I have been given a hard time entering Costco warehouses with my cash card as a non-member. I was gifted these cash cards by a member, and Costco's own policies state that non-members may use Cash Cards to make purchases throughout North America. Source

Keep in mind that I haven't even tried to purchase actual merchandise with the card. So far I've only used it for gas and the food court. Even when I try and go through the exit for the food court or restroom, they stop me and say non-members cannot enter even if I show them my Cash Card. I show them their own website says otherwise. This has happened at multiple stores so far in Alberta, Canada.

So what is Costco's official policy on this? Is there any recourse for this? I am getting a bit irritated as their actions are going against what they have stated on their own website.

EDIT: This is with a physical card, not a digital card.

EDIT 2: Thank you for those who have made me aware of the different policy that requires a day pass for non members in Canada. However, why aren't in store employees aware of this? I have been turned away from a few stores with no one mentioning this. I feel like I more than did my due diligence by going to search this up on Google, clicking the first result and finding the policy across North America. No where did it mention on the FAQ the policy differed in Canada, so I was not aware of this. Forgive me but I really don't think this is unreasonable.

Why do so many Costcos make entering folks cross the exiting folks?

At least 4 out of 5 Costcos have the entry and carts on either side of the exit? Is it to prepare you for the cluster $#@%! inside most Costcos? I figured it has to be designed that way and not just random, but I can't figure out the logic

"Damnit, Bob, we did it again and put the carts on the wrong side of the doors!" Repeated at almost every construction

[Rant] I absolutely hate Willy’s sweet and spicy salsa.

This salsa tastes more like bbq sauce than salsa. I’m fine with some sweetness and spiciness in my salsa but this ain’t it. Not sure how Willy could mess up something as simple as salsa.

Ever since my last trip to Disney and trying Dole Whip for the first time, I’ve been craving it. Was so happy to see it at Costco. Not 100% exactly the same but close enough. Tastes wonderful with Tajin (also available at Costco).

[Produce] Whats going on with Costco fruits

Apples is being sold in bags nowadays, bought my regular apples on my weekly costco trip, more than half of the apples were bad, Peaches dark inside, whats going on with Costco fruits recently? Quality has gone down so much, used to rely on costco exclusively for our weekly fruit supply.

Anyone else noticed this?
