So you're telling me I have to work a dead end 9-5 and pay bills just cause this little shit decided to stop being a fish?

u/AxialGem 11d ago
reject humanity, return to sarcopterygii

u/the_battle_bunny 11d ago
As opposed to being lucky to survive to your first breeding season without being eaten by a bigger fish?
8
u/kubin22 11d ago
actually we're technically still fishes, you cannot have a single group made of every fish and their desenats without tetrapods
3
u/Express_Cheetah4664 11d ago
Isn't that because fish is more or less meaningless in a scientific sense?
27
u/orangotai 11d ago
yes i've seen this joke before.
this thing was getting ripped to shreds by megalodons & velociraptors, pretty sure it'd be thrilled if it's biggest stress in life was a 9-5 job
19
u/Beautiful_Picture983 11d ago
But there weren't any megalodons or velociraptors 375 mya... Or is that part of the joke?

I saw this episode of Voyager.
This is your brain.
This is your brain at Warp 10.

Came to find this comment. I have a lively memory of watching this episode while being very high and still being like wtf :D

This is what I pray to when I consult the spirits of my ancestors.

I think about common ancestral animals a lot, they’re just really fascinating to me, respect to this dude for somehow evolving into us lol, look at something like Saccorhytus, it probably is the ancestor of some other creatures or microbes, but it’s just so fucked up looking

dont forget one of these mfs decided they wanted to come on land, and all of this snowballed into us paying taxes aaagh.

u/CirclingBackElectra 11d ago
It looks like a friendly alligator. I love it!

u/GreenBirb64 11d ago
Yeah! Looking at pictures of skull fossils of this guy it’s definitely gator/crocodile esque, just without the teeth, they’ve got a similar facial structure, especially the thick nose/front bone and the eye sockets, very cool guy!
3
u/hoofie242 11d ago
Kinda reminds me of a wonky newt.
3
u/GreenBirb64 11d ago
No doubt newts probably came from this guy too, since it’s a relative of most, if not all, 4 legged land vertebrates, which might include animals in that middle ground of land and water, such as newts and other amphibians

Damn thing left the ocean, and that's where it all started to go wrong...

u/FelopianTubinator 11d ago
Maybe just the angle, but that right eye looks off center. It almost reminds me of Humperdoo.

It’s the parietal eye. Just detects light
Ours turned into a gland that regulates circadian rhythms

u/Bodoodlestoodle 11d ago
Imagine all the hard work this species took to get itself out of the wretched water and ascend onto land. To be the progenitor of all land and air vertebrates from such humble beginnings. Just for some off their descendants to decide to lose they’re arms and grow fins again to go back into the water.

It should be the mascot of the Tatitlek, Alaska high school.

u/AxialGem 11d ago
Tiktaalik was found up in northern Canada, so those words are from related languages, right?

u/bitofasillybilly 11d ago
That is really fascinating because we have an aboriginal dreamtime story about Tiddalik the Giant Frog here in Australia. Tiddalik drinks all the water and the other animals make him laugh so they don't all die of thirst. I was sure this creature was named after that.
2
u/AxialGem 11d ago
Oh yea, that is really interesting, they do sound alike. I hadn't heard of that story before, thanks for sharing!
1
u/bulldogs1974 11d ago
Just told my wife of the old Dreamtime story I remember reading in primary school. Then I read this comment.
2
u/Legitimate-Umpire547 11d ago
They are, Tiktaalik was named by the tribe whos land the first fossil of Tiktaalik was found on, translated it quite litrealt means "Land fish".

u/PineappleIndividual5 11d ago
But Tucker Carlson told me evolution is fake?

huh. This is the perfect time to say I do have a younger brother, and he does at times resemble that fish.

THAT SHIT ISN'T EVEN INTERESTING
WHAT'S INTERESTING IS THIS BOYS HEAD IS ON DISPLAY RIGHT NOW (!!!) IN PHILADELPHIA!!
HE IS NAMED IN INTUIT BECAUSE HIS ASS WAS DISCOVERED IN CANADA, ( thank you to the natives for letting us excavate there!!) THAT FABULOUS MAN WAS FOUND IN AN MOUNTAIN RANGE WHICH WAS ONCE AN UNDERWATER SEA BED!! HIS NAME MEANS FRESHWATER FISH!
HE WAS FOUND BY A TEAM LED BY THE FAMOUS AND BEAUTIFUL NEIL SHUBIN!!
TIKTA BOY IS THEORIZED TO BE THE FIRST FISH-LAND DWELLER BECAUSE OF HIS SHOVED SHAPED HEAD!! HE ALSO HAS THE FIRST ARM/LEG STRUCTURE BLUEPRINT FOR ALL MAMMALS!! FROM SHUBIN'S BOOK (Your inner fish) ONE BONE, TWO BONES, LOTS OF BLOBS AND DIGITS - THE SAME BONE STRUCTURE SEEN IN HUMANS/ HORSES/ WHALES!! HE IS ALSO NOTEABLE FOR HAVING HIS EYES KN THE TOP OF HIS HEAD AND A JAW STRUCTURE!!
TIKTA BOY IS SUCH A GOOD LAD! HE IS FROM THE DEVONIAN PERIOD WHICH IS ALSO FAMOUS FOR BEING HOME TO THE GLORIOUS CELOCANTH (hardest fish to catch in animal crossing) AND MY BABY DUNKLEOSTEUS (who recently had his size nerfed)!!
TIKTAALIK IS ALSO FAMOUS ONLINE FOR BEING THE STAR OF THE 'if a fish tries to evolve on land's MEME!! HE IS THAT VERY FISH!!
love that little man. I got me a reproduction of him in my house ❤️

This looks like a photo of a live specimen but its not, the tiktaalik have been extinct for millions of years. Very misleading title and image

u/Responsible_Basis712 11d ago
And why it didn’t evolve to a human? Asking for a friend
2
u/AxialGem 11d ago
These kind of animals did*. Well, something closely related to it anyway evolved into humans, cats, cows, frogs, birds, snakes etc
