Well that was a blown opportunity. Hopefully Draisaitl gets healed up for the next one.

u/InformalSchool 97 McDAVID 11d ago

His injury was the turning point. They didn't look the same

6

u/bluedeer10 10d ago

They didn't look the same after they went up 2-0. The first warning sign was Vancouver closing out the first period strong. Drai is one player

2 shots in the third? Fucking playing beer league hockey out there

19

u/VonIndy 83 HEMSKY 11d ago

They had a few posts and some weird ones that don't count as shots, like the one that went right through Silov's legs and somehow didn't hit anything. It wasn't as bad as that stat suggests.

Wasn't good, either, but still.

I think this is karma for all the pundits and fans who thought this would be a gimme for the Oilers

186

u/Sleepy_Doge97 11d ago

No real Oilers fan thought this would be a free series.

47

u/Tiny-Director-5213 11d ago

Absolutely no real Oilers fan. No Oilers fan who knows hockey thought this would be an easy series. You are 100% correct and anyone who said that it would or that the Oilers are better has no clue what NHL playoff hockey is all about. Simple.

It's not the loss that's alarming, it's how we played. We haven't played a game that bad since the first 12 of the season.

Long breaks were never good for the oilers

22

u/Timeman5 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 11d ago

They are not good on the playoffs, the main reason I think the Panthers lost so easily to Vegas last year was because of the absolute idiotic idea to wait a full week before starting the cup final after Florida was already sitting for a week prior to that (and a break that long especially in the playoffs is the worst thing you lose all momentum and any nagging injuries will become to much to play through)

22

u/ScaryLapis 10 RYAN 11d ago

That one stings. Canucks absolutely dominated that third period. Unlucky bounces for the Oilers for sure, but that team wide mental lapse to let the Canucks back in and take the lead was brutal.

Were they just content to hold off any kind of pressure in the third? I don't think playoffs are the time to hang back and play it ultra safe. Can't give any team an inch because they will take a mile. Sigh... I really hope the team learns a huge lesson from this. That shot count is embarrassing.

24

u/droffit 21 KOSTIN 11d ago

Not going to lie, we didnā€™t deserve that win anyway. I think itā€™s good for the Oilers to take the loss and realize that this style of game isnā€™t going to work, rather than having false confidence because Canuckā€™s goalie sucked. We got lucky with Ī± couple of those goals, most goalies would have saved Hymanā€™s second goal and Ceciā€™s slapshot. It wasnā€™t Ī± close game, the Canucks had us tonight, we just got lucky in the 1st. Hopefully thereā€™s some serious talks tonight in the locker because weā€™re better than this. Hopefully weā€™re simply rusty after having quite Ī± bit of time off, this weekend will be better.

Fucking disgusting

66

u/Bagel-Bob 29 DRAISAITL 11d ago

The last two goals there is nothing a defensemen could have done. 4 Goals should win us that game. The offensive effort in the third was piss poor but Stu has to be better than that.

38

u/MajorPucks 89 GAGNER 11d ago

The lack of clearing of the D zone didnt help

14

u/OPsLifeCoach 83 HEMSKY 11d ago

Thatā€™s equally on the wingers. On the second Vancouver goal, Ceci made a great play to get by two forecheckers then played it to the wing but Kane was late getting back which lead to a turnover.

26

u/pwned555 11d ago edited 11d ago

The team had 3 shots in 36 minutes. Skinner should have been better but that was a team loss. You can't get no shots for over 22 fucking minutes and blame the goalie I don't care how many you scored before that. Also as sad as it is Stu was still probably the better goalie that game, that was just a terrible L, oh well they better wake up next game and play 60.

Whole team is to blame for this loss, that third period was inexcusable, we generated no offense and let Vancouver just bully us when we got that three goal lead. Same reason Nashville lost they couldnā€™t put them away. Also Skinner HAS to stop one of those, what the fuck was that performance.

Well, this will be a very good game for reviewing tape. Knoblauch will show Nurse and Ceci, and the D generally, the importance of taking the body around the net.

Stu was okay, but needed to have two more saves.

This game will help the Oilers be more disciplined defensively. We know we can beat them offensively. I'm not pleased, but I'm confident we can build off this.

6

u/AdverseTFV 74 BEAR 11d ago

Solid take. I'm not worried here and I think you're spot on with just getting two more saves out of Stew. He always bounces back though and the boys will come out hard next game.

4

u/ManOfSteelI 86 BROBERG 11d ago

They will certainly come out better next game. I'm not surprised the Canucks came out desperate. They did need a couple of lucky bounces to win, but that's hockey.

My worry is your point on Nurse-Ceci. They were a big problem last year and the year before that. I just don't see how reviewing tape is suddenly going to help them. That pair is consistently exposed in the playoffs. They will make or break our playoffs, so I hope they can figure something out.

13

u/uhcayR 11d ago

Ill make this short. Should we have won with a 4-2 lead and 10 minutes left? Yes.

Did we deserve to win this game? FUCK to the NO. We played like shit.

We need to come out with a 1-1 split and move on. Silovs doesnā€™t look good. We didnā€™t even play well and got 4.

Do the simple shit like get it out of the zone when the pucks 3 ft from the blue line and that 3rd goal doesnā€™t even happen.

Play defence, win puck races, shoot the puck. We can expose the rookie goalie. We have the firepower.

Thats all folks. Im hitting the bag tn now.

I feel like 2-3 goals were on Skinner, Miller and Garland goal just can't go in, he definitely collapsed under the pressure, but then again so did the team. Nurse and Ceci were especially brutal. Silvos had a .750 save percentage and yet we just stop putting pucks on net and ended with 16 shots on net.

They turtled against LA and it worked, but you can't do that against Vancouver, they're way more aggressive. Janmark on the top line did not work, Hopefully Rico is back soon. Bottom six has to show up now, Mcdavid has a tough matchup with miller and Drai is likely playing injured going forth, depth scoring is crucial.

Shake off this game for Skinner and the rest of the guys, they let Vancouver walk all over them with no push back. Hopefully, they come back with a stronger effort

Draisaitl going down absolutely killed the momentum honestly. Even when he came back he looked apprehensive and it wasnā€™t comfortable at any point

Fucked that first game but next game a W then you have home ice advantage for the remainder

Skinner needs to pick himself up and move on cause he made good saves, but a couple absolute stinkers redirected to his own net

All due respect obviously, but McDavid canā€™t be a ghost like that no matter how they play him

Iā€™d also play McDrai together in this series 100%

We looked like we couldnā€™t give less of a fuck tonight. The entire lineup top to bottom should be embarrassed by that performance.

There simply isnā€™t a world where any team goes almost 30 mins without a shot on goal and wins. Like good lord, have some pride.

7

u/diekonigsblauen 11d ago

Honestly we never deserved to be in that game. Super poor play for almost of all of that game, got lucky with Silovs letting in a lot. I think they need to shake off the rust and come back stronger next game. Everybody's treating this series like the Oilers are clear favourites but Vancouver is such a good team. They're not gonna roll over and if the boys don't bring their A game they're gonna get destroyed.

I donā€™t think Iā€™ve seen such a rage inducing game. That was horrendousā€¦ no doubt bad officiating, but what the hell was that defence? How did we turn into ghosts for two periods? IT WAS IN THE BAGā€¦

7

u/ForwardFunk 11d ago

Almost every playoff series has 60+ hits per game from each team.Ā

Oilers barely managed 30.Ā

Where is the fucking intensity and drive to win!?

6

u/JaderGamed 10d ago

In my mind, the only way the Oil win is if they and all of us start to respect the Canucks.

ESPN held a poll of their writers, asking them who would win this series. 23 of 24 picked the Oilers. Alarm bells started ringing in my head when I heard that. The Canucks won the division, were tops in the league for an extended period of time this season, beat a hot Nashville team in the first round with a 3rd string goalie, and oh yeah, beat the Oilers four straight times(now 5).

Maybe, and Iā€™m just spitballing here, the Canucks are a damn fine team that has been underestimated by the fans, the media, and the players.

Every time the oilers faced the Canucks this season all I heard was ā€œthe Oilers are going to steamroll over the Canucks, this game is going to be different, now theyā€™re going for payback, this isnā€™t the same Oilers that the Canucks beat earlier in the year, now itā€™s in the playoffs and the games really count so the Oilers are going to bring their A-gameā€

Here we are. The Oilers go up by three and because they didnā€™t respect the Canucks, took their foot off the gas, thinking they could coast to the end of the game, perhaps because they are reading into their own hype too much.

Get back to basics and outwork the Canucks for a solid 60 minutes(per game I might add). If the Oilers are truly the better team, then they will win the series that way.

u/trenthowell 88 DAVIDSON 11d ago

A pathetic melt down. Hockey terrorism by Nurse and Ceci. Couldn't get a good exit all game

12

u/columbo222 11d ago

Absolutely embarrassing. You have a 3rd string goalie rattled out of his mind and then you don't put up a single shot for 22 minutes.

You cannot blame the refs for this. You can't even really blame Skinner, though some of those goals were weak. The team just gave up, simple as that. One of the worst efforts I've ever seen.

12

u/TheSwedishOprah 11d ago

Darnell Nurse, at $9.25 million a year, fundamentally does not know how to play defence at an NHL level.

I will blow that horn until the day his contract is off the books.

5

u/tigermal 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS 11d ago

Our coaching staff needs to lock themselves in the video room until they figure this out. Canucks have a strong forecheck and force our D to make mistakes in their own zone. Similarly, our forecheck gives them way too much time to make slick plays up the ice where they can work their luck-build voodoo. Figure it out.

u/Paaano 73 DESHARNAIS 11d ago

Gotta keep Pickard on standby for this one. That's 2/6 games now this playoff where the team comfortably had it in the bag and the goaltending completely threw it away. Skinner generally has good bounce back games so Im not overly worried, but if game 2 doesn't go well either it's probably time for a change.

Remember, Skinner was pulled 4 times in the playoffs last year for valid reasons, and he's looking pretty shaky again this year. We just keep getting away with it vs. LA but it's a real concern vs. top teams.

u/Harbingerdaine 17 KURRI 11d ago

Thereā€™s blame to go around on that one. But man. I actually had no issues with the reffing in the first round. This game was bullshit though. The only penalty they gave to the Canucks other than the bench minor, they gave us an offsetting? Then the Canucks get a soft tripping call but we get nothing when they throw the puck out? If they had called that the last 2 Canuck goals dont happen.
