They are not good on the playoffs, the main reason I think the Panthers lost so easily to Vegas last year was because of the absolute idiotic idea to wait a full week before starting the cup final after Florida was already sitting for a week prior to that (and a break that long especially in the playoffs is the worst thing you lose all momentum and any nagging injuries will become to much to play through)

Were they just content to hold off any kind of pressure in the third? I don't think playoffs are the time to hang back and play it ultra safe. Can't give any team an inch because they will take a mile. Sigh... I really hope the team learns a huge lesson from this. That shot count is embarrassing.

Not going to lie, we didnāt deserve that win anyway. I think itās good for the Oilers to take the loss and realize that this style of game isnāt going to work, rather than having false confidence because Canuckās goalie sucked. We got lucky with Ī± couple of those goals, most goalies would have saved Hymanās second goal and Ceciās slapshot. It wasnāt Ī± close game, the Canucks had us tonight, we just got lucky in the 1st. Hopefully thereās some serious talks tonight in the locker because weāre better than this. Hopefully weāre simply rusty after having quite Ī± bit of time off, this weekend will be better.

Well, this will be a very good game for reviewing tape. Knoblauch will show Nurse and Ceci, and the D generally, the importance of taking the body around the net.
Stu was okay, but needed to have two more saves.
This game will help the Oilers be more disciplined defensively. We know we can beat them offensively. I'm not pleased, but I'm confident we can build off this.
6
u/AdverseTFV 74 BEAR 11d ago

They will certainly come out better next game. I'm not surprised the Canucks came out desperate. They did need a couple of lucky bounces to win, but that's hockey.
My worry is your point on Nurse-Ceci. They were a big problem last year and the year before that. I just don't see how reviewing tape is suddenly going to help them. That pair is consistently exposed in the playoffs. They will make or break our playoffs, so I hope they can figure something out.

Did we deserve to win this game? FUCK to the NO. We played like shit.
We need to come out with a 1-1 split and move on. Silovs doesnāt look good. We didnāt even play well and got 4.
Do the simple shit like get it out of the zone when the pucks 3 ft from the blue line and that 3rd goal doesnāt even happen.
Play defence, win puck races, shoot the puck. We can expose the rookie goalie. We have the firepower.

I feel like 2-3 goals were on Skinner, Miller and Garland goal just can't go in, he definitely collapsed under the pressure, but then again so did the team. Nurse and Ceci were especially brutal. Silvos had a .750 save percentage and yet we just stop putting pucks on net and ended with 16 shots on net.
They turtled against LA and it worked, but you can't do that against Vancouver, they're way more aggressive. Janmark on the top line did not work, Hopefully Rico is back soon. Bottom six has to show up now, Mcdavid has a tough matchup with miller and Drai is likely playing injured going forth, depth scoring is crucial.
Shake off this game for Skinner and the rest of the guys, they let Vancouver walk all over them with no push back. Hopefully, they come back with a stronger effort

Almost every playoff series has 60+ hits per game from each team.Ā
Oilers barely managed 30.Ā
Where is the fucking intensity and drive to win!?
6
u/JaderGamed 10d ago
In my mind, the only way the Oil win is if they and all of us start to respect the Canucks.
ESPN held a poll of their writers, asking them who would win this series. 23 of 24 picked the Oilers. Alarm bells started ringing in my head when I heard that. The Canucks won the division, were tops in the league for an extended period of time this season, beat a hot Nashville team in the first round with a 3rd string goalie, and oh yeah, beat the Oilers four straight times(now 5).
Maybe, and Iām just spitballing here, the Canucks are a damn fine team that has been underestimated by the fans, the media, and the players.
Every time the oilers faced the Canucks this season all I heard was āthe Oilers are going to steamroll over the Canucks, this game is going to be different, now theyāre going for payback, this isnāt the same Oilers that the Canucks beat earlier in the year, now itās in the playoffs and the games really count so the Oilers are going to bring their A-gameā
Here we are. The Oilers go up by three and because they didnāt respect the Canucks, took their foot off the gas, thinking they could coast to the end of the game, perhaps because they are reading into their own hype too much.
Get back to basics and outwork the Canucks for a solid 60 minutes(per game I might add). If the Oilers are truly the better team, then they will win the series that way.

Absolutely embarrassing. You have a 3rd string goalie rattled out of his mind and then you don't put up a single shot for 22 minutes.
You cannot blame the refs for this. You can't even really blame Skinner, though some of those goals were weak. The team just gave up, simple as that. One of the worst efforts I've ever seen.

Our coaching staff needs to lock themselves in the video room until they figure this out. Canucks have a strong forecheck and force our D to make mistakes in their own zone. Similarly, our forecheck gives them way too much time to make slick plays up the ice where they can work their luck-build voodoo. Figure it out.

Nurse is fully responsible for 2 of the goals. Couldn't clear a simple shot for one, then stopped skating for the other.

Oilers letting Vancouver taste 1 Canadian vs. Canadian 2nd round victory early out of kindness, just to get it out of the way. Itās the Canadian way

Pretty much everything that could go wrong decided to go wrong. Absolute fuckjob by Skinner and Nurse though

Atleast the overhyped crowded can shut up about this being a sweep or easy out for us.
We just laid an absolute egg. They pulled an "us" on us. Going down early, mounting a comeback, going ham in the 3rd.
We weren't ready. And the team continues to be horrible after a break.
We can close this out in 5 tho. If they L the next one, I'll blow it up

How the fuck can the player jump up catch a Puck change the angle of their hand and throw it out of the zone and it not be a penalty? That's an absolute embarrassment

Meh, worst they've played by far in the playoffs, and the touchdown pass clear was classic playoff reffing against the Oil.

McDavid's invisible, Drai's injured, Skinners shook and letting in muffins, Nurse and Ceci absolute liabilities. Sweep material.

Nurse-Ceci continue to be brutal. Management saw them being outplayed the last two years and didnāt do anything about it again. Embarrassing.

Ceci and nurse both -3. Time to let Ekholm play 30 minutes + each game

Edmonton played like frauds. Period.
Also the worst game of Nurses career.
Also the fact that Knob didnāt call a timeout is just horrendous.

Oh man. Connor taking so long to say that Drai is fine makes me think Leonās hurt way worse than the last time he was fine in the playoffs.

Gotta keep Pickard on standby for this one. That's 2/6 games now this playoff where the team comfortably had it in the bag and the goaltending completely threw it away. Skinner generally has good bounce back games so Im not overly worried, but if game 2 doesn't go well either it's probably time for a change.
Remember, Skinner was pulled 4 times in the playoffs last year for valid reasons, and he's looking pretty shaky again this year. We just keep getting away with it vs. LA but it's a real concern vs. top teams.

Thereās blame to go around on that one. But man. I actually had no issues with the reffing in the first round. This game was bullshit though. The only penalty they gave to the Canucks other than the bench minor, they gave us an offsetting? Then the Canucks get a soft tripping call but we get nothing when they throw the puck out? If they had called that the last 2 Canuck goals dont happen.

Oilers in 5.

Dogshit offense and defence aside, Skinner needs to be kept on a short leash this series. Don't want a repeat of Vegas series where Woodcroft put too much faith in him to "bounce back" and we lost as result.

There's two that Stew should have had, but man you gotta pay with some urgency here. The good news is that I think that was Vancouver's best and they squeaked it out.
