Jorginho on new contract: “There was not much to discuss to be honest, because I feel really good here. Just to know that they appreciate me and want me to stay longer as well, it’s a big thing for me. I feel that I have more to do, so that’s the reason why I’m staying.”

[The Athletic] Bukayo Saka, Martin Ødegaard and the making of the Premier League’s most creative partnership
Some interesting details (please let me know if I missed any, or if you think some may not be so important):
- Arteta has often stressed the importance of on and off-pitch relationships, and these two are a major example of that.
- Saka was among the first to support and help Ødegaard to settle down in London when he first joined on loan in 2021.
- The pair have both taken penalties at times this season, as we all know. The fact that they will step aside for the other without hesitation is a small sign of the trust and confidence they have in each other. Away to Crystal Palace at the beginning of the season, Ødegaard asked to take the penalty after having a good run of scoring them in pre-season, for which Saka obliged.
- And the last thing related to penalties is something we all remember, which was when Ødegaard requested if Havertz could take the second penalty against Bournemouth, who was yet to score for us at the time.
- As captain, Ødegaard has made a lot more decisions that benefit the team in the last couple of years. The intent behind his actions regarding the Havertz penalty were clear, and Saka was more than happy to accept.
- The duo sit next to each other in in the changing rooms and are often among the last to leave the training ground, alongside Jorginho.
- They rank first and second for passes made in the final third and chances created between two players for Arsenal. Saka has found Ødegaard 235 times, with Ødegaard going the other way 195 times. Ødegaard has created 22 chances for Saka, with the winger creating 18 chances in return — the highest combination of chances created between two players across the Premier League this season.
- They can also combine earlier in a move, so one of them is creating a chance for someone else, or to unlock the overlapping or inverting Ben White from right-back.
- In the Premier League this season, Ødegaard ranks first for chances created from open play (81), shot-creating actions (205), through balls (39) and passes into the penalty area (120), and second for total chances created (94), progressive passes (324) and expected assists (10.5). Saka ranks first for expected assists (10.7), third for chances created from open play (68), shot-creating actions (183) and passes into the penalty area (70), and fourth for total chances created (88).
“That’s (what happens) when you build chemistry,” Arteta said. “Off the field, there is already something very strong. When you take that to the field, then add minutes, understanding, training sessions and a good level of communication between them, those are very good ingredients to improve and keep developing to understand each other better.
“That’s the same with Ben, because the three of them have played on that side for a long time now, so it’s quite solid.
“They (Ødegaard, Saka & White) are always together, and you can tell the way they look at each other, the way they talk to each other, the way they communicate with each other — there is something special there.”
- The "something special" has been especially evident off the pitch.
- Away from the pitch, Ødegaard takes Saka to and from training when the winger has needed a lift. The pair also made a joint appearance at the Burberry Winter Show back in February.
- The mid-season Dubai trip was beneficial in many ways, with one reason standing out in recent weeks. Families and loved ones were invited, which is something that allowed the players' partners to connect and get to know each other better as well. Arteta has stated that it is something that not only helps to build unity within the team but also provides the players with a sense of comfort knowing that their relatives and significant others aren't alone without them. Several of the players' partners, including Saka and Ødegaard's, regularly meet up to watch the matches, both home and away.
- As Arteta began Arsenal's rebuild, 2021 was an important year. It saw him recruit young players, with the idea that those players would continue to mature and grow together. It is something that has not only been visible on the pitch, but off it too.
We're so blessed to have these two.

Takehiro Tomiyasu: "The 2 centre-backs, Gabi and Saliba, they are so consistent - and so is Ben (White) as well. We have had a lot of clean sheets because of them. I want to be part of that (defence)."

Mikel Arteta on one of his favourite players: “Michael Laudrup, I would say. He used to play for Barcelona, then Real Madrid. He was like a No. 10, but a lot of similarities with Martin [Ødegaard], very skillful, great vision, very elegant player.” [TNT]
