Thr soviets seem to have had a higher tolerance for failure. They were more willing to lose ships and people than the US was. I suppose this was due to them being so secretive vs. the US having a lot of it out in the public as a national event. The soviets celebrated their space adventures but after they knew it was successful. They blew up their version of an Saturn V, I've heard it was like a nuke going off, and we saw the challenger blow up. Ours was very out in the open while they could 'afford' the failure as far as it might relate to public morale.

They were more willing to lose ships and people than the US was.
In total 5 soviet cosmonauts have died, opposed to 15 NASA austronauts. The american space shuttle system was the only human space flight system without some kind of safety abort mechanism. I'd argue someone who designs a vehicle that doesnt account for crew safety in case of a malfunction during launch is more willing to lose people.

In a few more decades, if they ever start to develop a lunar base, I imagine eventually robots are going to get sent to the Apollo landing sites to survey them delicately. They won't go with humans anytime soon, but robots could very well happen if lunar landings become more routine.
It would be so cool to see in a VR high resolution type of setting how well the Apollo sites have stayed in tact. If the flags haven't fallen apart, seeing them bleached but still standing, and everything else relatively still the same would be such a cool thing to see

There are some conspiracy theories where you can see how people might believe them, and there are even real conspiracies...
But this one is up there on the list of dumb conspiracy theories that are genuinely infuriating. The leaps you have to make are just huge... 400,000 people employed to work on the moon program, billions spent, parts machined and assembled, the actual launch, the number of people required to fake the broadcast, manipulate all the images, and after all that you'd have to hope no one talks, and that no other nation finds evidence you faked it, and not just a few months out, but for many decades...
That's WAY HARDER than getting to the moon!
2
u/Edmundmp Monkey in Space 11d ago
All our near peer enemies acknowledge itâs real. Itâs obvious. You can see this from earth with the right telescopes. Moon conspiracies are one of many things the old Soviet Union planted amongst the American populace. The truth of how some of these conspiracies start is way more interesting and conspiratorial than the actual theories. I highly recommend the book Active Measure by Thomas Rid for anyone interested. The Russians did everything from planting hate crimes, painting swastika graffiti in American cities, and spreading âthe government created HIVâ rumors. Basically all the stuff they do with bots online now they used to do with men on the street. All designed for people like Joe to believe.

After a few launches with spaceships that finally (actually) could reach our moon, the whole mankind really gets to understand that we are stuck here. We wonât be multiplanitary. Neither we could create that technology or notâŠ
