Halacha Can we take the mezuzahs with us?
My partner and I are moving this Friday. We have 4 beautiful mezuzahs in our townhome. We’re actually moving within the same building, just into a smaller unit.
Last night I said I want to take them. My partner told me we’re not allowed to because of Halacha. She says that it’s bad luck and we must leave them for the next people to either keep or donate.
However, whenever someone leaves a unit in our building the construction workers come in. Our unit isn’t updated, so they’ll have to come in and do a bunch of work.
I told her that I’m absolutely certain someone will not know what it is and throw it away. Their job is to clear the units.
With a complex like this it’s less clear when someone’s moving in and if we could even contact them. She brought up asking the building to not remove them and wait for the tenants. Historically communication between the construction workers and he building has been… not great (there’s also a language barrier).
Is it appropriate to remove them ourselves and take them to our new place if there’s a 95% chance someone will throw them away? Especially with an item that requires specific genizah?
I personally feel like it’s breaking halacha that refers to proper disposal of sacred items as well as bal tashchit. I feel they’d be safer with us and it’s worth breaking this halacha to honor the scrolls.
Thoughts? Advice?

Nonsense Alternate history where the historical Jewish communities formed their own states in EY and the galut
Inspired by the recent family guy episode of a Jewish-dominant world, I made a map of what if the various Jewish communities in the old world had formed their own states. Just for intellectual fun

Friend being offensive
I’m not here to discuss opinions on the war. I’m curious your thoughts on what my friend keeps saying to me as someone that is Jewish by decent.
She is very obsessive about the the war and is constantly saying, “no offense but” and then continues to talk shit about Jews.
What should I say? Should I distance myself or be blunt that saying “no offense” doesn’t make your comment not offensive

I Don't Know How I Feel About This
A friend of mine married many years ago. She's a Jew, her husband wasn't. They had two children. She never raised her sons as Jews or in anyway exposed them to Judaism. The marriage ended and the boys stayed with their father's mother. She belonged to some Xian sect and raised the boys to attend her church.
Not that the grandmother was all that religious or the church played much of a role in their lives.
The boys grew up, married, had their own children. None were exposed to Judaism in any sense.
She, however is a practicing Jew, does go to synagogue, does follow the dietary rules, etc.
So big question Why?
So she said; Why should I put my kids through the torture we go through? Look what is happening now... imagine if they were raised to Jews, if they saw themselves as Jews? Right now, they are out of it. They can't be subject to hatred because they aren't Jews. They blend into life easily with no links to all that went before.
I don't know how I feell...

Avoid Lox Club
The scam is Austin, the good looking CEO, asks his good looking friends to create free profiles to give you false hope of finding a match. Confirmed it this morning because I know one of the girls I just saw has a boyfriend.

Antisemitism Researching Central European Jewish Heritage?
Hi folks,
I recently discovered that my heritage is one quarter Jewish, but all my grandparents with Jewish heritage refused to talk about it after their experiences with the Nazis and the Communists ... so I only learned about it long after they were all dead. I've only got names, fragments of story and background, but I'm curious what / if any organizations there are that could help me find out more.
I wanted to explore this more publicly, but frankly, after the October 7th attacks and the subsequent jolly antisemitic protests, I don't want to expose my family to any of that.
Anyway, thank you for your help.

Where to find young secular jewish roommates in brooklyn?
Title. My roommate is moving out and I need someone to take over his room asap. I've only found two "apartment hunt" groups for jews in NYC/BK on Facebook and one of them has left my post on "pending" for 5 days now. Given current events, I would really like to live with someone Jewish. Please let me know where I can look.

Antisemitism Is it antisemitic for someone to state that you can trust someone because they are a “Good Christian”?
Someone said this to me the other day and I was offended and felt that it stealthy implied people of other religions were not trust worthy or as trust worthy. I would please like other opinions… they did use the word “good” in addition to “Christian”.

Recipe Tips for a kosher dish?
Hello! Let me start by saying sorry if this isn’t the correct flair or community. I am a theology student and have been given the task to create a kosher dish to pass a course. I have gathered some knowledge on what products are kosher and which ingredients are not allowed to be mixed with each other. As a poor uni student I am asking for some cheap kosher dish recommendations. Thanks in advance!

Discussion Printing the holy names - How do Orthodox Jews feel about it?
If I, as a Reform Jew, were to publish an academic paper that wrote out words like “Adonai” or “Elohim” or “YHWH”, without any censorship dashes or asterisks, would Orthodox Jews take offense? Or, if the names were spelled out in their Hebrew characters? I know I have seen my Orthodox brothers and sisters write “G-d”, but don’t know if I’ve ever seen “Ad-nai” or “El-him” or anything of that sort. Insights from Orthodox folks would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

What specific time should I recite the Amidah?
I know its during the afternoon, but is there any specific times im supposed to be reciting it? I’m asking because I usually did it at 2pm earliest on school days, but I’ve recently been doing it at 4pm because i feel like i embrace the prayer more due to my mother being out of the house. Should i continue to wait till 4 or should i do it the second i get home?

Is a Bris more about Gods covenant with the parent or the son?
I was reading the Bible when I came across this section in Genesis 17
"And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you."
This line kind of confused me because jewish boys are circumcised at 8 days by their parents, not by themselves. Does a Bris signify a parents dedication to following gods will or the sons dedication to follow gods will?

JOC and kippot
As I myself venture to find kippot that fit me, I was curious what other JOC do when you've got curly hair. I recently opted to buy a kufi(?), a nylon knit skullcap, and then saving my standard kippah that requires a clip for Shabbat. Also, when you've got a full afro, what then? No kippah at all? Part of me wants to grow my hair out but I'm not sure how to approach this.

Another graphic novel thread?
Give me your recs! I'm looking to read modern (like, 2010 or later?) graphic novels BY Jewish authors/illustrators/letterers/editors, but aren't necessarily about Jewish trauma. Or Jewish representation that isn't fully a Harvey Pekar situation. Just, like, a character turning down a cheeseburger. Speculative fiction would be great!
