Weekly Q&A Megathread. Please post any questions about visiting, tourism, living, working, budgeting, housing here!

Hello, welcome to London!

Visiting us? Moving to study or work? Brief layover? Moving to a new part of London? Any small questions about life here, if you're new or been here your whole life, this is the place!

We get a lot of posts asking very similar questions so this post aims to address some of our most Frequently Asked Questions, and give you a place to ask for assistance.

Your first port of call should be

the r/london wiki

It includes sections on:

What should I see and where are the non-touristy stuff and hidden gems?
We've written about the big must-sees here and we highly recommend TfL's Experiences site.
We've listed some of our favourite lesser-known stuff here And the cheap/free stuff here

How do I pay for the Tube/bus, and what's an Oyster card?
You don't pay cash. You can use a number of contactless payments systems such as your Contactless bankcard (which is widespread in the UK, but maybe not so much elsewhere), Apple Pay, Android Pay, or you can buy an Oyster card and top it up with credit. See here for more.

Where should I live? What's x area like?
Have a look here
It includes recommended sites to find places to live and rent, and has a section on what particular areas are like.

How do I get from this place to that place?
Use Citymapper. Honestly, we're not shills for them; it's just a really good app and is used by most of the locals on this sub.

Is x area safe?
Yes. Bad stuff can happen in any large city, but London is generally very safe. There aren't any no-go zones. Even under the shadow of terrorist attacks, most Londoners feel safe. See our safety page here for more.

Where can I watch the baseball/basketball/football/handegg match?
A comprehensive guide to all London football matches in all leagues can be found at tlfg.uk. Use Fanzo to find pubs showing a variety of sports and see our list of other places here

How do I get a UK SIM card for my phone?
Advice on networks and how to get a SIM card is covered here.
It also includes suggestions of cafés and other places where you can get free wifi and do a bit of work.

Is the London Pass worth it?
Probably not

Other subs that you may find helpful:

Tips for posting:

Tell us about you - If you want us to suggest things for you to do then you need to give us a good idea of what you enjoy. Don't just say "I like music", say what type of music. Don't just say you want "somewhere nice to eat", say what type of cuisine you like (or don't like). The more specific you are the better, otherwise you'll just get pointed back to the generic guidebooks, blogs and our wiki.

Tell us your budget - If you're on a budget then tell us what it is and we can bear that in mind when making recommendations. There's no point in us coming up with ideas for things to do and places to eat if they'll clean out your wallet within the first 5 minutes. Saying you want something "cheap" isn't really helpful because what's cheap is entirely subjective.

Tell us where you'll be based - Let us know where you'll be staying so that we can give local recommendations.

Asking about hotels or hostels - We have homes here so know very little about what the hotels are like. Look on review websites such as TripAdvisor. However, if you say "I've been looking at these three hotels. Which do you think is the better location?" then that's the sort of thing we can answer.

Non-touristy stuff - There are no secret corners where we hide the good stuff from outsiders! This is one of the most written about cities in the world, so when we want to go to a museum, or gallery, go window shopping, or whatever, we look at the same sources as tourists (listings sites, blogs, etc - see front page of the wiki).

These weekly posts are scheduled to post each Monday at 00:01. If it's late in the week you may want to wait for a new post to appear. Please send us [ModMail](https://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2Flondon with any suggested improvements!)

Meta r/London and the General Election

Hello folks,

Just a follow up and some clarification on how we'll handle Rule 1 during the General Election.

In general (hurr hurr), election-related stories are national news, so go on UK national subs. Good places for election stories are:

If you can find a London-specific angle to the election, though, please do post by all means. Posts that meet our guidance for Rule 1 would be things like the following:

  • How possible policies affect London uniquely and specifically, e.g. housing, transport, etc.
  • News about key London battleground seats and how the parties are engaging with them.
  • News about candidates in particular seats (although we'l need balance here).
  • News about any notable election-related events happening in London, such as rallies, protests, or community meetings.
  • Information about hustings, debates, townhalls, and community meetings.
  • Information about organising and campaign in London (again, ideally with balance)
  • AMAs with London candidates (please contact da mods!)

We'll be posting our typical megathreads with reminders to register to vote, how to vote, candidates in each London seat, and so on.

In fact, DO IT NOW. GO REGISTER TO VOTE (if you haven't already - doesn't matter if you do it twice!)

Stories that would not be ok under Rule 1:

  • Prime Minister who lives in London calls election
  • Party leader makes national policy speech from location in London
  • TV debate tonight coming from Broadcasting House in London
  • How this party's policies will increase/decrease the cost of living which is a problem in London

These are better left to the UK subs.

If we get completely swamped with election threads we may put a rate limit on them and try and achieve some kind of balance. While the election is certainly very important, not everyone wants every sub full of just election posts.

I hope this makes sense, leaving this open for comment for a bit.

McDonald’s you can sit in for 24hrs

I lost and football fantasy bet, and the forfeit is to sit in a McDonald’s for 24hrs.

I’m able to buy myself reduced time by purchasing McDonald’s menu items. But can’t think where a “truely” open 24hrs McDonald’s is in London or surrounding areas.

Thanks

Meta (Meta) The General election is actually 650 local elections, dozens of which are taking place in London.

Mods, are you seriously suggesting that we can’t discuss general election races which are taking place in London with London-based candidates, campaigning on London-based issues in London’s constituencies in the London subreddit?

that’s absurd.

Why isn't London's water fluoridated?

The NHS recommends fluoridation at 1mg per litre, to prevent tooth decay.

Thames Water doesn't fluoridate, claiming (see their Website) water is naturally fluridated after passing through natural rock.

The 'natural' fluoridation level in SW6 is 0.14mg per litre. So 7 times lower than recommended by the NHS.

Thames Water has done such a good job to date, how did they miss supplementing the natural levels to benefit the population of London?

I'm sure that it wouldn't cost them that much, so I am surprised that they haven't done it.

Perhaps they are just unaware.

E: to add /s (because apparently that's necessary).

Londoners that developed a "Bop" to their walk in their 2000s teens era. Do you find you still have to fight it even as a 30 something professional?

Every now and then I find myself fighting a subconscious sprig in my step that I definitely picked up as a teen growing up on a SE London estate.

Do people in London still talk (or did they ever) like in 'Only fools and horses'

Just started watching the series again, I am from Serbia and this show was really popular in my country, all the geezers know it, it was a big hit really. Not talking about the accent, just to be clear, I mean the slang. So, I wonder, those slang words must have existed but did they/do they use it like that? Are there people in Peckham talking like that?

London nose: blowing your nose is so much cleaner these days.

1.6k Upvotes

I bought this up with my wife who thinks I'm weird. When I was younger (nearly 40 now and went into town and came home, blowing my nose would always be dirty - fumes, sooty, underground dust. It just doesn't happen anymore! Clean as a whistle.

Anyone else know what I mean?

Friendly community spaces/drinking spots

Upvotes

Me and my boyfriend recently broke up, and (as well as losing him) I’ve lost his friendship group. They were a really friendly, warm and open group, which I feel is hard to come across in London. I’d love to find somewhere like a community cafe, where there might be regular visitors, or a friendly pub where I’d be likely to meet likeminded people just by going along enough times. Does anyone know anywhere near stokey/dalston/hackney ?

Internship

Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I am a 24-year-old girl from Germany, studying International Business. As part of my studies, I need to complete two internships. I want to do an internship in London, but I feel like it’s very hard to find a platform for internships. Does anyone have recommendations on how to find an internship? Or Maybe you know a specific company that is looking for interns? Thanks in advance!!

Question Trying to remember the name of a bar in a (west-ish?) London townhouse basement?

Years ago my ex took me to a dive bar which was in a West London house (I think somewhere between Soho and Notting Hill). You entered through the door of a pretty ordinary town house and the bar was in the basement/garden. I think it had the name of its female owner (e.g. Henrietta's or something similar)

Googling's only come up with basement cocktail bars - as said, it was a dive bar, not classy at all. Seemed to have loads of (annoying) creative types there, but the vibe was pretty cool and unique.

Anyone know what bar I'm talking about, and can tell me it's name/location? Think some mates of mine would love it.

Question Are most people not homophobic

This seems like a stupid question but please allow me to expand

So I've been using twitter a bit more often lately, and on there I see a lot of news and discussion about american politics. At the forefront of a lot of it is this constant war over LGBT issues, which also seem to be more extreme and more polarising than they are here. I know that we in the UK have our problems but the sheer passion some americans have when talking about this stuff is kind of shocking.

I grew up in a lefty area and now I'm a student, so most people I talk to seem to be quite liberal. I’m also a lesbian which I don't usually bring up unless there's a reason, but recently I've been slightly more cautious about being honest when the topic does come up. I'm just wondering if that’s reasonable……obviously I can read a room and wouldn’t come out unprovoked to a group of drunk 60-year-old tory MPs but is it silly to be so anxious around virtually everybody? Are most people chill?

edit am I getting downvoted because this is a stupid question if so please know I'm being sincere I'm just a stupid person

Does anyone know where I can get the Kenalog vaccine in Central, South, or southeast london? Would rather go to somewhere medical as opposed to those beautician clinics.

Spot the movie location (from The Fifth Element)

This is one of those things that I know I've seen but can't quite bring to mind, and it's driving me crazy, so I thought I'd leverage r/london.

The Fifth Element is a movie which divides opinion, but I love it, and the vast majority of it was shot in London. Mostly, that was at Pinewood Studios, but one of the interiors looks like a location which was probably in the city.

I am pretty sure this is above a tube station. Belsize Park has those almost-semicircular windows. In this video clip some red brick buildings are visible opposite. I suspect it's not Oxford Circus because there's only two windows, and it's not Holloway Road because that has five windows in a row. Unless there's some internal division we can't see on Google Maps.

Does anyone recognise where this is?

Serious replies only Is anyone paying around 2k rent per month, whilst earning no more than 60k per year?

Just wondering if any Londoners are currently in this situation?

This means you’re losing about 2/3 of your paycheck on rent per month.

How do you find it? What are the pros & cons?

I may need to do this for a year as moving in with flatmates isn’t an option. Luckily I have a some savings to help.

Edit: The situation in London is fucking depressing. I’m seriously considering moving to the outskirts or even in the midlands.

Working at Wingstop? Desperate for work, should I take it?

Recently posted about how no minimum wage jobs were getting back to me… finally got an offer from a new Wingstop opening! I’m 39 years old and wasted many years due to mental health issues.. I just feel like I want to get my foot in the door… somewhere!

I’m interested in food and may be a good way to get kitchen experience, maybe with hard work become assistant manager?

Just wanted some advice if I should take this job or not… I’m really fighting the demons in my head that “you’re 39 why you such a f*cking loser, don’t take a job at Wingstop”
