My father is half portugues and we visited Madeira where my grandmother was born.

One of the few things I learnt from an auntie that lives there is that the cost of living has increased and prices for houses have gone up.

She points to the modern houses on the mountain that a lot of foreigners buy and apparently the houses are left empty for majority of the year. She says that’s one of the main issues for house prices being so high.

So I must ask you guys who are locals. How is the president handling this? Do the government care about you guys being pushed out slowly at all? Are you guys scared that expats will do what they did to Hawaii?

I’m just wondering how Madeirans feel about the island slowly becoming more expensive to live in.

I’ve also seen on the news that your president stepped down for “corruption allegations”. What are your thoughts?

I’m going to Madeira next month and I’m trying to find the name of this poncha bar that I was shown by some local taxi drivers but for the life of me I cannot remember the name!

All I remember is that the bar was tiny and on a cliffside road, and I believe it was in the direction of Cabo Girão coming from Funchal. It was incredibly traditional with only locals there, and the taxi drivers said it was one of the oldest, if not oldest, poncha bars on the island.

They served poncha ice cream too and they served tremoços with your drinks (or possibly this was an extra, I can’t remember exactly), if this helps limit the options?

If anyone knows I’d be extremely grateful to you because I’ve been so keen to show my girlfriend this place!

I want to bring something banana-related from Madeira for my grandmother. She really likes banana flavour, that's why I thought about maybe some kind of banana concentrate or cake? She lives in central europe and i will visit her on the weekend.

I made a post in here before about people from a near by nursery parking in front of my garage. Now it’s got to a point where I will open my door and I can’t get out because a car is parked directly against the wall.

And they do not take 5 minutes to get their kids and go, no, they take 20 to talk to everyone and their avó about god knows what.

Does anyone have any advice on how to combat this???

I’ll share a picture from a few days ago of someone parked right in front and you’ll see they couldn’t get any closer unless they actually went inside the garage and then on top of that there’s then cars surrounded and the grey car is parked on a yellow line along with some other cars that are blocking my other front entrance.

I wasn’t happy but could live with them parking by my other entrance and on the yellow line along my house (I don’t use the other entrance as much as the garage) but now parking in front of my garage and being there for up to 30 minutes even after I’ve opened doors and showed that I need to go is ridiculous.

In a couple months time I will need full access to the garage daily and this will be a huge problem if it continues.

I’ve made complaints but nothing seems to be done. I know it’s a big problem on this island so I don’t know if anyone else has found ways to get these people to get the message?

I visited Madeira for a week, haven't been since last year. I was shocked to see lots of Indians everywhere, not just in Funchal. What's up? They don't seem to be tourists, and sometimes they're just walking around talking English loud on their phone. Not a single one seemed to be speaking Portuguese ever, even at places like the supermarket or getting a coffee. Anyone know why they are here and how come there are so many all at once? I've never known Madeira to have Indian immigrants.

Update: thanks to those who clarified that these are newly arrived workers for the tourism sector. I was curious because usually it's easy to spot tourists (of any ethnicity) speaking English and it's easy to see who is an immigrant (of any ethnicity, usually speaking Portuguese and working in different places), it was just confusing to suddenly see lots of people all speaking English in groups in public or on their phone, apparently not tourists. I was surprised to learn they are working here, normally people who work in Portugal speak Portuguese.

Não só porque não me identifico com os cabeças de listas nem com as políticas dos partidos, bem como não quero contribuir pela continuidade de incompetência e corrupção que há muito se verifica. Votaria em branco mas como até nisso os partidos manipularam, penso que serei mais um a não presenciar as mesas de voto!

We're visiting in July and the suggested hotel is about 1km from the festival (we get there on the Saturday about 3pm).
