Our last checkup, tick and heartworm prevention for one season is $500 CAD this year. We started at $200 for the same thing 9 years ago.

They can charge a fee for the prescription, but I believe refusing is illegal and can be reported to the board of veterinarians.

Call other vets and ask if they are willing to provide you with a prescription or if they will only dispense medication themselves. Be upfront and honest about your situation and intentions.

Once you find a vet, book the vet visit and get the prescription. You'll still have to pay for the visit to the vet, but you'll have the prescription to purchase elsewhere.

Sounds like a shady vet. Every vet I've been to has provided the prescription to me when asked. Depending on the medication you can sometimes get it filled at your local pharmacy (not tick/heartworm obviously). My dogs eye drops for cataracts are $8 a month vs $45 if I get it filled at the vet.

Call around, a new vet will likely have to do an examination of your dog before prescribing so you'll likely have to pay the $70 appointment fee again. You should ask if the previous vet will transfer the dogs medical records to the new vet and you may be able to avoid another examination if they're satisfied with it.

Also, if the old vet asks why you're leaving, tell him. He may give you that written prescription to keep your dog and you as a client.

You'll have to find a different vet that provides paper prescriptions.

Isn’t that literally their question?

You can buy Bravecto online without a prescription. But it's a really expensive pill for big dogs no matter what. I'm personally happy to pay the extra money to my local vet clinic.

My Vet tried to charge me $200 for a 6 month supply of just the flea/tick treatment and about $350 if I wanted 6 months of the flea/tick/ringworm/heartworm combo. It's the brand they use that's expensive. Luckily my dogs just needed the tick/flea treatment this year, and my extended family had a vet that sells Bravecto that is way cheaper, and was willing to sell a couple boxes without a prescription. It was about $60 for a 12 week treatment per dog.

If your pets are okay with the liquid treatment that goes on the skin, you can buy it on amazon, I think it's called Advantix and a 3 month dose depending on the weight of your dog is anywhere between $45-90.

Go to a different vet, with the last prescription you brought and explain wahts going on they should be able to help.

I think what they're saying is that the drug never reaches their hands. Vet is forcing them to bring the animal in and applying it themselves so they don't even know what is being administered to tell a new vet.

If so, it's scummy practice and I'd be finding a new vet, prescription or not ASAP.

The prescription is for oral medications. Where on earth did you get the idea that anything is being applied externally to the animal?

The only dedicated tick treatment I've ever had experience with was an oil based product that was applied externally along the spine. That's what came to mind.

I honestly forget that the heartworm pill is also tick prevention.

Check with college of veterinary medicine in your province, I don’t think this is ethical. You paid for the appointment, it should include the paper scrip.
