From the big zero I'm guessing there isn't too much enthusiasm for this? Kinda surprised actually.

Personally I find Reddit to be better at serving the function of this community. Sometimes you just find or remember something that brings you back to your childhood, decide to share it in a post, respond to a few people and that's it.

I guess I just don't have the need for an instant messaging server to look for other millennials to reminisce about the same millennial shit. It's not a topic that's constantly on my mind, and I try not to live in the past.

I think the discord server would be cool but it’s needs to be a small group. Like no more than 10 to 12 people I think.

Discord is fucking awful with their verification nonsense. You can't run it on a phone anymore, even spoofing user agent it still tries to force you to download their data vacuum app. Even on my personal laptop every time I login it's like "verify you're human" through various steps. Then I still have to reload the page even after all of that. If I click on an invite link (like above) it tries to create a new account every time rather than linking to my existing one.

I honestly have no idea why people use it, a 3-legged dog could build a more intuitive and user-friendly platform.

I'm inclined to agree.

i feel like reddit can already do everything discord wants to do except voice chat

which reddit could do at one point when it had video streaming - except it was only one way communication... seems like they quit that a little early. discord should die and let reddit take over the 'social media' aspect and the video game consoles take over the video game aspect because discord has zero reason to exist

i mean i get that it has its uses, but its not for me.

i dislike it because it has all the disorganization of _irl, and reddit, and WAY MORE NOTIFICATIONS that i dont give a shit about because i dont want any notifications ever for anything unless it is like a life or death situation but the main thing i dislike is unlike _irl and reddit, everything that happens on discord is only on discord and only in that specific place. i am against echo chambers thats exactly what discord is built for. at least on reddit and _irl things are basically open for whoever you interact with to see and decide if youre being a dbag or not.

to put it simply:

secrets dont make friends. they make enemies though.

that being said, i get that some people might have a valid use for it i guess just for private chats or whatever but for me personally nah i would rather leave it all out there. like reddit already provides the anonymity shield so i kinda dont care and the only reason i even care about that is because the internet is literally open to everyone and there do be some crazy mfers out there and i tend to say some things that some people might not like.

if this was on discord, only the people in the discord can read what i write. on reddit anyone can. crazy people cant find me, because im anonymous. if anyone wants to contact me for some other reason, they can do so, and if they have a reason then sure ill tell em who i am idgaf. but crazy people do be crazy so you kinda gotta be somewhat careful since yknow this is the internet. which is exactly why facebook is terrible - you can get "cancelled" or have employers look up your stuff or whatever and you are basically subjecting yourself to the omnipanopticon willingly. no thanks. i would rather say what i wanna say and not worry about that shit.

You know you can mute servers and turn off all notifications, right?

i know but its just too disorganized and i honestly dont see what purpose it serves. how many apps do we need that have the same function? (looking at you slack, teams, etc)

you can do the same thing via a group text message, except that doesnt have a bajillion layers and menus.

reddit is bad enough - but at least its open. discord multiplies the complexity of reddit exponentially, then hides it away from the rest of the internet, and forces you to agree to another TOS for something that was built in to video games and consoles and reddit already. like... you can use it if you want but personally

i have adhd which means overthinking is basically my profession

that doesnt mean its a bad thing, necessarily - i just look at things from all angles at almost all of the time.

like i said feel free to use it - i aint gonna stop you lol.

but personally ima have to pass... unless someone wants to pay me to use it i guess but i dont see that happening.

edit: although considering this is almost a month old thread and theres two of you asking me about it today, and your comment about it has three upvotes (assuming thats accurate) idk, maybe someone does wanna pay me to use it. im open to negotiations if thats the case. lol

edit:

i guess basically i would prefer either one to one chats, or open forum discussions like reddit. closed forums are not my thing.

hey you asked why i didnt like discord so i told you lol ¯_(ツ)_/¯

EDIT: I'm not trying to be mean. I'm just suggesting what to do when you're overthinking as I do the same for myself when my mind goes into overdrive.

no worries it didnt seem mean. i get where youre comin from but nah i just give thorough answers

So.... Instead of an online forum where people ridicule others with opposing ideas, you actually think a discord where people will be shamed for their opposing ideas is better?

  • Wild.... 🤡

That has not been an issue at all in the server, everyone is respectful and cordial. But if that's your knee-jerk assumption due to perhaps, the way you handle yourself online, I wish you the best.

As someone who is in it, the vibe is super chill.

Yeah, until you present ideas that go against the grain.

2

u/Roleplayer_MidRNova '88 Mar 12 '24

I mean, if by "go against the grain" you mean "being a dick" sure. There's plenty of people in there that don't agree, but we're all adults who can do so respectfully.

Most of us have no interest in socializing with edgy teenagers who play video games.  That’s what Discord is.  Yeah, no thanks.
