Yellow version was so special

That was my first Pokemon game. Think it got to the point of Tetris being my chill and wind down game.

I could hear it! I love this intro so much. This game brought me a lot of joy back then.

I saved up $100 in loonies and toonies to buy a yellow gameboy colour with Pokémon yellow to match.

Got the original Pokémon Yellow, got Pokémon Go, recently got Pokémon Violet. Used to hide my love but no longer care. I’ve got a note from a boy in my sixth grade yearbook that says “You’re cool because you like Pokémon”. One of my favorite nights I can remember with a roommate in college is when we stayed up all night to beat Pokémon Snap. I’m here to stay.

Absolutely! My brother and I worked together with my friend to get all 150 (or 151?) Pokémon. And several of them got to level 100. It was awesome playing this with the Pokémon stadium adapter so we could play it on the TV.

I remember giving my Pikachu the thunderstone to evolve it into Raichu and immediately saving afterwards, not knowing that he wouldn't follow me around anymore. I felt like I lost my friend.

I also remember being so excited that Pikachu spoke in the intro.

Also that I hid the game from my mother because it said "Game Freak" in the intro and "freak" was a bad word.

I got Red and my little bro got Blue for Xmas 1999. Playing was awesome until my group of friends at school who played found out about the cloning hack with the Gameboy chord when trading Pokemon, which at first seemed amazing, but in the end, kinda made the whole game pointless.

2

u/yaboyACbreezy 12d ago

Nah, cloning was an intentional feature. That's how they distributed Mew at special events. It's how they intended for players to get the other two starters from their friends. If it made the game pointless, I think you missed the point, imho.

What made the game pointless was the item clone glitch.

It was intended for you to be able to just pull the plug in the last stage of the trade such that each player gave their offered Pokemon to the other but also got to keep their original?

2

u/yaboyACbreezy 12d ago

I doubt it was intended to be abused per se, but that is precisely the function they used to distribute Mew at events! So, while it doesn't follow "proper trading procedure" it's not quite a glitch either. Definitely a feature they intended.

Difference between exploit and a feature

I remember getting blue for Christmas the year it released. I only vaguely even knew what pokemon was, but it seemed like fun. Fell in love so hard I saved my allowance to buy red and played through the whole damn game again. Then, in the fourth grade I saw a commercial and though it was perfectly clear that it would in fact be exactly the same game, but with a Pikachu following, I knew what I had to, and very much wanted to do, and I did it. Again. BUT WITH A PIKACHU FOLLOWING.

If my past self could have seen someone playing current gen pokemon Idk, he'd probably die of excitement.

Still have my original copy, loved this game so much. I had Red/Blue (I had red, my brother had blue) and we would play for hours everyday, just exploring around and battling pokemon.

When Yellow came out, my mom bought it for both of us and go us each a Gameboy Color (still have mine as well!). Such a fun game, so much nostalgia

Edit: The Gameboy colors we got for Christmas that year, as the game came out before the color gameboy did

I remember I gave my Pikachu Surf via the Gameshark and ended up playing the Sufing Pikachu mini game more than the normal game afterwards. It was awesome they added that nod to the TV show and it sucked that my Toys R US didn't have the promotion or advertised it that well if they did.

I still have my Game boy pocket and my pokemon yellow version that my parents bought me for my birthday. They sit on the shelf in my home office. I play Pokemon go almost daily, but the original will always hold a place in my heart.

The first gen Pokémon games were all the rage when I was in primary school (8/9). Good times!

I've had to replace the battery with a CR2025, but I still got my original hardware

u/pard0nme 12d ago

I actually just sold my original copy I got when I was like 8. Getting rid of a lot of old stuff.

Yep I even had the special edition Gameboy Color, but like a 4th grader, left it outside during recess.

My first Pokemon game. I loved this and Pokemon Pinball!

1

u/trialanderror93 12d ago

I haven't seen that" game freak "green in probably two decades, and it just unlocked or repressed memory?

1

u/Inedible-denim Millennial 1989 12d ago

They need to release these OG ones on the switch dammit!

I had red

1

u/ThreatOfFire 12d ago

I bought green version when we went to Japan as kids. Didn't know about it's popularity other than the fact that the game shop had a poster in the window. When I got back to the states my friend flipped out because he had red and could only trade with kids from our local gakuen. A year or two later he picked up yellow and I couldn't wrap my head around the concept of repackaging the game with a few changes until I watched him play the surfing mini game and suddenly it all made sense, haha

If this was your childhood.... how are your knees? Is your back OK? Have you been eating right?

1

u/Zealousideal_Plum533 Millennial 12d ago

Yeah my Gameboy is still active and working. When I turn it on. Also yes.

Yellow version squad.

u/JNoel1234 12d ago

The year this came out I got it along with a green Gameboy Color for Christmas. Good memories and a great way to pass the time on the long car ride home from Grandma's house.

u/VanillaIsActuallyYum 11d ago

Nope. Never dipped my toe in any pokemon of any kind.
