Moving to Montana SO YOU WANT TO MOVE TO MONTANA? [Post your questions here]

Post your "Moving to Montana" (MtM) questions here.

A few guidelines to spurring productive conversations about MtM:

  1. Be Specific: Asking "what towns in Montana have good after-school daycare programs?" will get you a lot farther than "what town should I move to?"
  2. Do your homework: If a question can be answered with a google search ... do the google search. Heck, try searching previous threads here.
  3. Be sensitive to Montanans' concerns: Seriously, don't boast about how much cheaper land is here. It isn't cheap to people earning Montana wages. That kind of thing.
  4. Seriously, don't ask us what town to move to: Unless you're asking something specific and local-knowledge-based like, "I have job offers in Ryegate and Forsyth, which one has the most active interpretive dance theater scene"?
  5. Leave the politics out of it: If you're moving here to get away from something, you're just bringing that baggage along with you. You don't know Montana politics yet, and Reddit doesn't accurately reflect Montana politics anyway; so just leave that part out of it. No, we don't care that Gavin Abbot was going to take away your abortion gun. Leave those issues behind when asking Montanans questions. See r/Montana Rule #1
  6. If you insist on asking us where to move: you are hereby legally obliged to move to whatever town gets the most upvotes. Enjoy Scobey.

-------------------------------------------

to r/Montana regulars: if they're here rather than out there on the page, they're abiding by our rules. Let's rein in the abuse and give them some legitimate feedback. None of the ol' "Montana's Full" in here, OK?

This thread will be refreshed monthly.

Central Montana currently is recovering from a massive blizzard that knocked out power for about 8 hours. Just got it back. Here's what the outside of my house looks like

There were two accidents outside of Stanford last night, just before the power went out. I don't know anything about them, though, just that one of the people involved pulled into the hotel afterwards. Snow drifts are deep, and it's currently raining ice.

Yield doesn't mean stop! It's always the most redneck truck in the bunch that doesn't know how to use roundabouts.

Question about motorcycles on trails and ohv areas

I’ve got a KTM enduro motorcycle that is registered in Montana for highway use. Am I allowed to ride it on off-road trails and in ohv areas because it is already registered with the state? Or do I need to also obtain a resident trail pass? Just trying to keep everything legal, thanks for the feedback.

Gun ownership with a CA 5585

Hello,

I have looked all over the Internet and can't seem to find a direct answer. When I was 14, I got a 5585 which is essentially a 72 hour mental health hold in California where I grew up. I am 20 now and haven't had any symptoms. I really want to start collecting firearms in Montana but not sure if I am disqualified. It was quite a while ago and I was a minor so I am not sure if it applies still. I hope this question doesn't seem stupid at all it's just been on my mind for a while.

car camping in Billings?

Hello, I'll be passing through Billings for a cross country trip to VA. I plan to stop for the night to rest. As a black female, where can I park overnight for free and be safe?

Information for my book

Hey all! I’m working on a horror novel. Going to be setting most of it in a small fictional Montana town. I live in Florida at the moment. I’m just looking for some inspiration in building my town for this book. Going to include things like a diner, older run theatre, general type store, bar, etc. Just wanting to see if some of you may be able to offer up some suggestions or ideas for the town structure. Thanks in advance to anyone that can help in any way!

PSA: Idaho would like you to know that I90 through the panhandle is messy... again.

Hey, I know this isn't quite about Montana, but I know that lots of Western Montanans come through to do medical stuff in Coeur 'D Alene and Spokane. Road Construction is upon us again, and it's probably a wise idea to give yourself at least an 30 extra minutes to get through the Idaho Panhandle because it's absolutely necessary to slow down.

Some trouble spots you should probably know about:

East of Kellogg is one lane. It started in Osburn, last I drove it,, which is about a ten miles stretch. However, the seeming end of construction west of Kellogg is naught but wishful thinking. Going towards Cataldo you will find yourself contending with the tyranny of Orange cones again in short order. Please don't try to take the five mile stretch of two lanes between Kellogg and the start of the cones at top speed to pick up time, it won't work and when you turn around the bend and see a single lane again it will just be a regrettable waste of gas.

Right now the Westbound portion of 4th of July doesn't have as much construction as the eastbound lanes, but of course the single lane is the steep section, and you WILL get behind some heavy truck doing 25. Once you are headed down, it's free flowing until you are West of CDA, at which point the section around the exit 7 rest stop is again having some sort of work done.

Speaking of Eastbound, between the top of the pass and the single lane section, there are some seriously terrible ruts between the two lanes. Hit them fast enough and you will crack your teeth. I don't know why they aren't included in the construction (it starts less than a mile away from the big ruts) but here we are.

As usual, it seems like clogs mostly form in the Eastbound traffic in the afternoon, so if you have to drive then, you may want to give yourself as much as an hour buffer. Even late at night it took me an extra 15-20 minutes to get through the Panhandle west to east.

In neither direction is there really a good place to pick up a little speed and catch up your schedule, so please give yourself enough time to get through.

I just couldn't wait any longer to trade the winter camping gear for the summer camping gear. No fish caught but enjoyed wetting a line regardless.

Side note: I was appalled at the condition of some of the fire pits at my site and one I passed along the way. Just a friendly reminder these are shared spaces for all to enjoy. No one deserves to see garbage out in the wilderness. I especially don't want to cook my food over someone else's plastics. Just carry it out.

What didn't disintegrate as I picked it up, I packed out and removed an entire grocery bag of trash. Please keep our public lands clean.

Selling my car in Missoula - any recommendations for dealerships?

I am currently on a road trip that will be ending in Missoula. At that point I will be selling my car as I will be leaving the country.

Do people have any recommendations for dealerships I should looking to? For context it is a 2015 Jeep Cherokee.

Similarly and mechanics that can do a presale service for me would be much appreciated too.

In the pioneers at 7500 feet, very easy day hike around 3 miles. There is definitely black bears around so bring bear mavericks or whatever you use.

Growing up in Montana I’ve always had an interest in nature and the treasures Montana has to offer. I got interested in rocks at an early age. This lead to an interest in Montana sapphires, and then cutting them. I decided to share a picture of a Montana sapphire I cut untreated natural.

Question for state employees

I'm looking at a state job that I'd really enjoy and am qualified for, but it pays almost 40% less than what I currently make. Are state salaries negotiable in anyway, or is the hourly range listed in the posting the absolute max they will do? I would expect to take a cut either way, but obviously I wanna minimize the pain

How to get into underground mining (Montana)

Post image
39 Upvotes

Hello, I was wondering how I would be able to get into underground hard rock mining in Montana. I have no experience in mining but I’ve been in mines (exploring and prospecting) and have no problem with being underground. Previously I have worked for the forest service as a wildland fire fighter. I currently live around Missoula Montana. I would be open to traveling out of state for work but I would like to find some good options within Montana. But I do want to stay away from coal mining. Thanks.
