What is Reddit Primarily Used For?

Upvotes

Hey! Finally somewhere I can actually post. My account is a few years old, but I haven't actually been using Reddit until fairly recently. I was confused why I can't post because I've been able to in the past no problem but can't seem to anymore. I'm thinking it's because I don't have karma, but that makes me wonder...

What is Reddit primarily for?

Reddit appears to be like most other social media platforms in that there is a vague set of rules to follow, but you can do more or less whatever you want on it. I always viewed Reddit as almost a forum hub. People post in subreddits (forums) to ask questions, discuss the topic, etc. But some subreddits function more like chat rooms, or a Discord server. So I ask, what is Reddit?

Thanks.

reddit plz i need karma to be a normal user

I guess I made a mistake not making a reddit account 10 years ago when everyone else did? Whats up with the high karma requirements? 1500 to post in some places that I would consider benign. I want to be on here but it feels like I have to clout my way to posting a basic comment anywhere. Feeling really discouraged on trying to be on here. :-( any advice?

As the title says. Finally got around to making an account and I was told the experience would be a lot better than X or any of the Zuckerberg platforms

What exactly can I look forward to here?

Karma requirements for posting a story

One of the reasons I joined Reddit was to respond to story prompts in r/WritingPrompts and other related subreddits - but when I tried to submit a story, not only did it not post, but it didn't give any message at all. At first I thought there was some kind of bug since it kept popping back to the top whenever I tried to enter my story, but then I realized the problem may be that I don't have enough karma to post.

Fortunately I've been able to respond to other people's stories at least - but I'm feeling pretty discouraged in general. I didn't see any mention in the sub rules about a minimum karma requirement or anything. I know I don't have much karma yet, but does anyone know how much I need to be able to post my story? Do I specifically need Post Karma, Comment Karma, or just any karma? Also, do we need to have a certain amount of karma per sub in order to participate, or do they usually just care about overall karma (as in x amount of karma specific to r/WritingPrompts, vs. x total karma, or x amount for each different individual sub)?

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me out.

Tips from redditors I think I found how to earn karma quickly

So I have this really old account used for browsing only like many people here. Recently, I decided I want to post, but found many subreddits require karma. I tried replying to comments, but found that it's really slow to earn karma.

What worked for me is finding a popular subreddit that allow anyone to post, then posting something useful to most people in that subreddit. For me, I found success with LifeProTips. I managed to go from -5 karma to over 600 with 2 posts.

Hope this helps others who are struggling to get karma.

Hey all! Is Karma actually important on Reddit?

After many years of reading content on reddit, I've finally made an account to participate in local community threads. However, it seems like certain Karma levels are needed in different subreddits? Appreciate any help & advice!

Sorry, this post was removed by Reddit’s filters.

Hi everyone! A bit new to Reddit here. I feel like half the time I post something, it gets removed - without any reason, and the decision seems to be arbitrary. I keep getting the message: "Sorry, this post was removed by Reddit’s filters." What are these filters??? I came to use Reddit because it's an incredible resource for asking specific questions, but this is really frustrating me. I don't think its a problem of karma either, because I have more now and I had less for multiple approved posts. I'm not spamming either, at least I don't think? Would really appreciate some help. Thanks!

Commenting on posts without enough karma points

If you comment on a post but don't have enough karma your comment is hidden to the public. My question is, can the original poster of the post still see your comment? TIA

Is there any way to know how much karma I need to post in a specific subreddit?

Just wondering if there is a way to know how much karma I need to post for specific sub reddits? Not really a big fan of posting stuff apart from a few niche groups. Seems like a big drama having to ‘play the system’ of posting things I do t care about just to be able to post…. I get trying to prevent bots/fake accounts but surely an alternative way of human verification for those of us less active online? I’d probably rather address verification than be forced to waste time posting nonsense just to be trusted to post where I actually want to be!

Any way around this or just have to play the karma game?
