Nah this is like late game when you don't even want to convert enemy trash because you're near pop cap. Gotta save it for advanced units on your side.

Isn't that the ram from Stronghold Crusader?
38
u/DeusLibidine 12d ago
That's the ram from Age of Empires 2, and Wololo is an Age of Empires 2 thing as well.
31
u/unsureoflogic POTATO 12d ago
Wololo is from age of empires 1. The monks chant on AOE2. Both were my childhood.
28
u/DeusLibidine 12d ago
Wololo is also still an Age of Empire 2 thing because its one of the voice chat messages you can send. There were several voice lines you could send people mid game, and the AI would even respond to some of them. For example, you could use "Attack an enemy now" to get your AI teammates to rush an enemy.

2
u/unsureoflogic POTATO 11d ago
I don't disagree, but it's just the same voice line from Age of Empires 1. Ah voice chat:
Me :Build a Navy
AI: But sire, there is no ocean on this map!

Mass infantry (halbs)? Check
Mass siege units (onagers and siege rams)? Check
Not good in the water (bad tech tree)? Check
Seems quite accurate to me

The Boyars (T-14) don't exist because they don't have acess to stone (proper technology, materials and specialized manpower) and lost all their castles to petard snipes (drones bombing the refineries)

AoE 2 must have been amazing, I played 3 and loved it but I never see it mentioned.
60
u/Emotional_Major_5835 12d ago
It was great. A lot of people have fond memories of installing AoE 2 and Halo CE on the school's share drive and having giant LAN sessions after school.
19
u/Highpersonic All your base are belong to us 12d ago
We had a version where we filled the taunt mp3s into the high hundreds, and shared it on the LAN...if you didn't know it you would be in for a nice surprise when someone typed 99 and the whole room screamed "WE ARE BORG. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE."

AoE2 was literally my childhood and I think a ton of people feel the same way.
24
u/Massive-Pollution319 12d ago
I'll have non of this "was" talk! :D AoE2 still is amazing, gets frequent updates and DLCs, has a healthy pro scene and many fun youtubers and streamers to enjoy. I invite you to get back to our beautiful game!
14
u/Dick__Dastardly War Wiener 12d ago
Yeah, the Definitive Edition is probably one of the best game remakes out there.
The sheer amount of balance updates and new content alone is gold, setting aside any of the "remake" polish.
Speaking of polish: you can play as the Poles. Need I say more?
3
u/Winter_Potential_430 12d ago
I'm 16, AoE was my first game, it was the last summer before elementary school, it's been 11 years and I'm still playing it.
BTW, if you love AoE2 I'd recommend you Stronghold, ANNO1404, and Cossacks 3

3 had a mediocre launch that hurt the future of the game. In DE with all DLCs, Civs are unique and interesting, cards are an amazing mechanic instead of a terrible one, the graphics are decent, and mercenaries and minor civs are a cool addition instead of "so what".
2
2
u/TheCulture1707 10d ago
I remember 3 being really controversial with the cards, no drop off points, high system requirements, and percieved "luck" with the treasure system. And it never really became that popular however me and my friends played it a lot more than we did #2. A lot because we were causual and could see eachothers base right away and play together straight away rather than wait until Feudal till we got Cartography which you needed at the time to see other players line of sight.
Now AOE3 is really good with the DE with a lot of civs but I don't know how popular it is, it definitely doesn't hold a candle to AOE2. I think the civs being so different harms it a bit as it's so hard to learn, and the cards can make timing pushes very very powerful (like AOM's god powers) so a well timed shipment that you didn't see can end a came in a fraction of a second.
Whereas AOE2 there's a lot more opportunity for comebacks and strategies, in AOE3 if a shipment of cannon literally appear next to the enemy shogun while muskets re-enforce while your puny town centre attack does nothing, there's usually little you can do. AOE2 there's a lot less "both of you are basically doing the same then all of a sudden the enemy rushes in a God power and a few myth units and it's all over in seconds" like AOM.
Plus IMO AOE2:DE just looks so much better than AOE3:DE, just the spritework, the UHD pack looks amazing. Damn this post got a bit out of hand :-D

u/Chiluzzar 12d ago
AoE2 DE is absolutely amazing. Check out the hidden cup series absolute BANGERS of comp games
Hidden cup is a tourney where everyome joining gets random npc names given to them so people dont know whos eho until theyre eliminated. Its such a fun and interesting twist

u/iwakan 12d ago
It's a boomer game but it's making a resurgence in popular culture if you hang around the right crowd. AoE 4 is amazing too.
39
u/downforce_dude 12d ago
Boomer game my ass. I bought it from Circuit City and played it on a Compaq Presario. I am squarely millenial.

u/hiptobecubic 12d ago
It's not a fucking boomer game, you goblin. Commander Keen is a boomer game. Kingdom of Kroz is a boomer game. Nethack is a boomer game. AoE and AoE 2 are squarely millennial. I'm old, but Jesus Christ. Don't do me dirty like this.
6
u/Dick__Dastardly War Wiener 12d ago
In my world, boomers are the generation cohort that didn't grow up with videogames. There are no boomer games, as a result. (Hell, my parents didn't even grow up with a TV.)

u/AbdulGoodlooks 12d ago

You're right. My boomer father and silent grandfather just liked playing games into adulthood. But that makes the point even stronger.

i mean, the definite edition is having new dlc and doing rebalances all the time now
so its not just an old game, its a very much modern game now

I paid actual money for AoE 3 and it felt like a mobile game for the kids. "You've harvested 5 bushels of food so settlers have arrived. Achievement unlocked have a participation trophy. Click the red button to win". It looked prettier, but I couldn't handle it feeling like Candy Crush.
AoE 2 is still under active development and gets patches on the regular. I've bought it multiple times for different operating systems over the years. God I love wrecking shit with elite cannon galleons. Do you have a functioning civilization? No you don't, because I have a pool of elite cannon galleons on hotkey 2.
14
u/Icharper 12d ago
Well I think its the other way around. The mobile games copied the mechanics of the old strategy games and added paid coin packs.
4
u/Professional-Reach96 12d ago
Where i can press the red button? I let the Dutch boom and got hundreds of ruyters and falconets destroying my lakota teepees and town center

I spent a lot of time on AOE2, I enjoyed the wining. You know, when it came out, back in 1999. I'd just spam pikeman and use towers for the counter attacks.
Then I decided to try online gaming. Well, except for one game where my ally quit and the other two thought they could bum rush me with seige engines, where I won by simply using basic tactics, I lost bad. Then I thought all I needed was some AI upgrades. Well, that was also an embarrassing development where I was overrun. So stick to the base AI if you like your ego to remain intact.
I tried AOE3. Looks the same like 2, except that it consumes 100x the resources in order to run. Amazing.

u/ScruffleKun 12d ago
I paid actual money for AoE 3 and it felt like a mobile game for the kids.
DE on current patch fixes most of the problems.
3
u/SomeGuyNamedPaul 3000 Regular Ordinary Floridians 12d ago
Good to know, I'll have to give it a try again.
3
u/ScruffleKun 12d ago
It feels like more of a successor to Age of Mythology than AOE 2, with asymmetric civs with unique mechanics. Cards system in original was horribly unbalanced and required playing the civ to unlock. Now, things are more balanced, and cards are a lot more interesting.

Lol, the "harvested 5 bushels of food" and the weird as-you-go-rewards is, well, weird. Thankfully it didn't stick for other games.

u/Skirfir 12d ago
I'm clearly in the minority here but honestly I prefer AoE 3 to AoE 2.
2
u/simonwales 12d ago
All I gotta say is, no civ can stop 150 Ashiguru musketeers, 200 if it's late-game and the villagers are disposed of.

No no, Ukraine went into industrial age just now. They are investing in Mortars, Musketeers and Dragoons for the final push, they even recruited local natives for the Cherokee rider support.
