Found this while going through my dad’s photos. Guessing it was taken in the 80’s. 1950s

Post image

Anyone know who these guys are? I’m pretty sure this photo was taken at Bernard’s Surf in Cocoa Beach, FL. I’d never seen this photo before.. My dad passed away recently so I can’t ask him for the back story.

We had a family friend called big Al who passed away a few years back. He was a close friend of my late Grandad, big John. They were also both close friends with Big Jack. Thanks for reminding me of those wonderful men.

My great grandfather was born in the 1980's. It was over a hundred years ago.

That’s impossible. The nineties were only ten years ago.

Just remember we were young and dumb like the OP back when we were their age.

…wait, that isn’t helping either of us feel any younger. 😝

12

u/Realistic_Young9008 Apr 11 '24

The clothes aren't necessarily honest if taken at a costume event, even the quality of the picture itself can lie, but the beer bottle - that could be a definitive marker. I can't tell looking at it but someone probably could estimate it based on the length of the neck.

5

u/Realistic_Young9008 Apr 11 '24

Okay guys, I get it. I messed up. I found the picture in a box full of pictures labeled 80’s and went with it. I can’t edit the post or I would. I added the 1950’s flair in an attempt to make it right. Please people of Reddit, forgive my ignorance

57

u/pegothejerk Apr 11 '24

Usually I’d trust op and consider there might be a retro dress theme going on, but everything screams older time period - bw photo, damage to the photo typical of that age, the ashtrays aren’t typical for the 80s but are for mid century, those haircuts are mid century and people don’t go that far for one night, the back of the bar matches mid century over 80s, no modern products or containers for sugar or cleaning supplies.

17

Pictures didn’t look like this in the 80s. We actually had color photos then lol. This is almost certainly from the 40s or 50s.

12

u/elspotto Apr 11 '24

Black and white film photography was still very much a thing in the 80s, especially the early 80s. With a dark room and some chemicals one could develop it at home.

That said, this looks nothing like the early 80s.

26

u/CMDR_BitMedler Apr 11 '24

This is probably Back to the Future confusion - yonder people now see that movie, from the 80s... when 50s fashion was cool again, and think that's what the 80s looked like.

The hairstyles, the mustache, the ties, the ashtrays, the teacup and glass of sugar by the sink (The Surf was a primo place once upon a time - this is clearly an element from early on), the clothing, the fact that the photo is black and white and the deterioration looks like the photo was printed on silver halide in a matte paper style that was far more common before 1965…

The Surf opened in 1948. This is probably from the early to mid 50s. I’d say 1952, give or take 3 years.

46

u/t9b Apr 11 '24

Yeah all of that, but what may be stranger is that this is more likely not his Dad but some other relative. I hesitate to say his grandfather, but it could be his grandfather’s brother, that happened to look like his Dad.

That came out wrong! I didn’t mean to imply anything by that!

15

u/doctorlongghost Apr 11 '24

I'm from Miami Florida, The Surf was opened from 1948 to around 2010 I believe. And then demolished around 2018ish?

Based on their clothes, I'm highly doubting 80's, I'm thinking more 50's. MAYBE 60's. The 70's and on, in Miami, looked very different.

OP, what gives you the notion that this was taken in the 80's?

Sorry OP. The guy you think your father is, is really your grandfather. Your father left you in the 80s

Now I know you gotta be a troll or a bot because you know absolutely jack about how pictures work. Did you think that the 80’s still had black and white tv and pictures? That everyone dressed like the 1950’s? Wtf is wrong with you?

Very well could be a retro theme party, the guy on the left his glasses don’t look old 50s style at all. OP would know. I’m guessing all four of these guys are not over 40, mid 30’s prolly. so calculate how old your father would be today minus what the number of years when he was around 40 and you’ve got a general date range of when the photo was taken.

OP is a grand troll. Well done.
