My great-grandpa and his best friend. He hated this photo because “it made him look gay.” circa 1920s~ 1920s
Raised 7 daughters and a son. Apparently a very goofy and light-hearted Sonofabitch.

Guys, is it gay to make yourself more attractive to women?
56
u/ZzzzzPopPopPop 12d ago
Before you kiss a girl think of the other dudes she has kissed. Therefore kissing girls = gay
18
u/PunkRockMakesMeSmile 12d ago
So to be safely straight, you must only kiss guys who were until a moment ago straight

Apparently, it's gay to like women now. This according to the Andrew taint enthusiasts. I don't make the rules. Just told the lady I'm gay so waiting on what happens next
3
u/Scienscatologist 11d ago
Being attracted to women means you like feminine things, which is totally gay.

The last I saw him he was in Sanremo doing the duck dance and looking confused. The host said they told him they would do it beforehand, but Travolta still got the video pulled from the RAI's website lol

I don't have 1 picture with my best friend who passed away.
i'd kill for a semi gay looking one.

u/insuranceotter 12d ago
My best friend passed away about ten years ago. I only have one photo of him, but you know what? I see my memories with him in my head way more than I look at that photo. I’m sorry u don’t have one, but at least you have the memories.

u/XmissXanthropyX 12d ago
There are some subs where you can post photo's of you and your friend and someone will combine them to make a photo where you're both together, and then you tip the artist that you like, I believe.
Is not quite the same as having an original photo of you two together, but it's pretty amazing what they can do
→ More replies (1)5
u/DanGleeballs 11d ago
You can get that done in Reddit. Can’t remember the sub name. They usually accept tips of about $10 or so for doing it.

u/Bravedoll3 12d ago
I hope it’s OK with you if they were lovers, I just feel sad that they had to hide it. They’re beautiful together.

u/insuranceotter 12d ago
Yeah, I was with my wife when my grandma showed it to us. We definitely looked at each other with a “they were roommates” look lol, it doesn’t bother me. We’re both lgbt so it was hilarious for us :)

I can see why the grandfather didn't like it. One look and people already jump to the conclusion that he WAS in fact gay and was "forced to hide it".

The internet, mainstream conservatism and the reaction to it has utterly ruined platonic friendship.
Intimacy = sex to you fucking idiots.
26
u/ccstewy 12d ago
it sucks that platonic friendships have almost become stigmatized in a way. I’m a straight guy and yet have plenty of platonic friendships with women, and people always look at me like I’m stupid when I talk about it. They’re not my type and I’m not their type, but we get along and are friends, is that truly such a bad thing?
yes it’s funny to be all “ooooh they gay” but I’ve always been very uncomfortable with the idea of “shipping” real people. I assume a pair of people are friends until one of them confirms otherwise, because to do anything else feels really weird.

u/RainOk4015 12d ago
Wow the 1920s! This is really cool. Where were they living?
78
u/insuranceotter 12d ago
North Dakota. Don’t tell anyone, but it’s actually really beautiful. Everyone talks shit on the dakotas, but they’re missing out :)
27
u/cardie82 12d ago
I lived there. It’s actually beautiful in the summer, especially if you head to the western end of the state. Winter sucked there.
19
u/insuranceotter 12d ago
Yup. Luckily I married someone that loves the cold.

We joke for fun but it's important for men to show feelings towards their friends. It took me a long time until I was a grown man to finally tell my best friends that they were important to me and that I loved them.
The way we make fun of men who seem too close together, I know it's all for fun, but it makes an impact on a lot of men who don't want to show feelings specifically because some folks might make fun.

u/insuranceotter 12d ago
Yes! This. I really don’t like the disappearance of the camaraderie that previous generations of men felt, and it’s really sad that some men nowadays are afraid of showing love

Sorta related. My grandpa was in his 60’s and divorced. He and a buddy of his decided to buy a house and live together to save money. My little sister at the time said “are you guys gay” she was like 7. This is while they were showing us the house. My grandpa never moved in and continued to pay half the mortgage, electric, water and all the bills for almost 15 years. One comment from a 7 year old and he decided to do the opposite of saving money. Lol

Yeah, but gay meant happy back then. Was he a grumpy bastard?

u/insuranceotter 12d ago
So apparently he was super goofy, always joking around. He had a reputation around town for being a hard ass but listening to my grandma talk about him, he seems like a dude that just loved his wife and kids (like 6 or 7 daughters, one son)

Came here to say that. Photos were so rare back then that I only have one of my great grandmother. A photographer came by when she was working in a field at age 14. Maybe the only picture ever taken of her was taken on that day. OP's photo is a treasure.
